To think that people who keep their curtains closed all day must be ill, or hiding something?

The first thing that I do, when I get up in the morning, is to open the curtains. Possibly a window as well, to let a breeze in. There are a few houses nearby, who never open any curtains. Bedroom and lounge curtains are always firmly closed, even on lovely summer days. The gardens are unkempt and scruffy, all the paintwork is peeling. But someone definitely living there, as in one case, a brand new car on the drive and I've seen pizza delivery to the other. Does anyone else find this really odd, and think that there must be something amiss with these people? It must be so dark inside. I find it almost a bit creepy.

So all you people who keep everything shut, please tell me you open the windows at least?! Is it not really stinky in there!!

ginislife · 16/06/2021 23:07

I've lived in my house for 17 years. There's a house at the back of me that has never opened their front bedroom curtains in all that time. Weirdos.

Schmooo · 16/06/2021 23:17

I keep mine closed at the front to stop my yappy Yorkshire terrier standing 'guard' at the window and barking at everyone passing by!

ThirtyCharacterUsernamesOnly30 · 16/06/2021 23:22

In this heat I keep my curtains shut in the day and then open the curtains/blinds and windows at night.

Not sure where you are but it's 28 degrees today. The best way to keep the house cool is shut curtains and windows so the hot air, and hot sunshine can't penetrate. Well, at least not as effectively as when the curtains are open!

Judge away.. I'll be enjoying stepping into my cool house (well 23 degrees feels cool after being out in 28) while you sweat with your curtains open!

ThirtyCharacterUsernamesOnly30 · 16/06/2021 23:24

But maybe other people just live differently to you?? Maybe they're depressed, maybe they're perfectly happy, maybe they're doing something nefarious. Who knows?! I wouldn't let it bother you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wegobshite · 16/06/2021 23:26

Lol you would hate me I don’t give a flying fuck if people think I’m weird
I don’t want nosey fuckers looking into my house - plus I will often walk around with just a Bath towel or sometimes butt ass naked if I’m in bed and want to grab something from the kitchen

I have black out blinds and french shutters over the black out blinds
( apart from my kitchen window which is just a french shutter ) all over my house
I do have the shutters open at the top bit of the shutter in the kitchen so I can see out if I want to
I do have the patio doors open most of the time at the back of the house and the way my house is designed i can leave my front door open but no one can see in so always plenty of fresh air in my house

Weirdfan · 16/06/2021 23:37

We have blinds, blackouts in rooms at the back of the house because we get so much sun in the afternoons it's like a greenhouse and verticals at the front. Front ones are light-coloured and let in plenty of light but we keep them closed because our dogs bark every time anything/body moves outside otherwise, nothing sinister and my house is well-aired and not at all smelly I can assure you Smile

MegaBeach · 16/06/2021 23:48

I’m ill, very private, plus our house is huge and airy, so no stuffiness. I don’t care if passers by think it’s creepy. Our window coverings let plenty of diffuse light in and I’m happy with that.

WeelerDeeler3 · 17/06/2021 00:29

We both work day & night shifts, separately
Currently WFH due to covid
So even on the hottest day one could be asleep & one could be working

The one that is working, the sun moves & have to close the curtains to be able to view monitor

The one who is asleep will have the curtains closed

BearOfEasttown · 17/06/2021 00:31

@Bluedeblue

Maybe they don't want people (like you) nosing in ... And from the content of this thread, and the fact you started it, it seems like you would!

PattyPan · 17/06/2021 00:52

I do think it’s weird when people NEVER open their curtains but we have ours closed during a lot of the day at the moment to keep the sun out because otherwise the house is roasting

RickiTarr · 17/06/2021 00:58

Actually, thinking about it, maybe they are bloody well ill. So what? Is being ill breaking some bylaw where you live? Really odd thread title.

memberofthewedding · 17/06/2021 01:02

Reasons to keep curtains closed:-

To stop people looking in
Keep hot sunlight out
Remove temptation from thieves
Privacy
Stop pets being spooked
Being on shift work
Being disabled/mobility impaired

ThinWomansBrain · 17/06/2021 01:11

thermal curtains - they keep the heat out

Thewiseoneincognito · 17/06/2021 01:32

When I was a kid my mum would fret about curtains being closed during the day incase the neighbours thought someone had died hahaha.

Conchitastrawberry · 17/06/2021 02:28

In this weather I don’t open the curtains or blinds.

RainbowsBrowniesLove · 17/06/2021 03:18

I keep my curtains closed when working from home because the glare from the sun means I can't see my screen. Not hiding anything apart from my cat who tends to poke her head under the curtains anyway Grin

MaBroon21 · 17/06/2021 04:19

Keeping curtains closed and turning your home into a sealed tomb are not the same thing.

fantasmasgoria1 · 17/06/2021 04:28

My ex used to keep his curtains closed due to paranoia related to mental illness.

Fitforforty · 17/06/2021 04:35

@NcagainNC

I keep all my curtains shut on ‘lovely summer days’ especially because it keeps my house cool
Me too. I don’t want my house to be too hot for the children to sleep. Windows are open over night:
Maggiesfarm · 17/06/2021 04:45

I always have my bedroom window open a little but wouldn't open the curtains. In hot weather it makes sense to shut out the heat and light and it feels peaceful. and comfortable inside.

garlictwist · 17/06/2021 05:11

We never open our curtains at the front because the house opposite is very close and can see right in. Also we keep our bikes in the house and don't want them to be visible from the road.

garlictwist · 17/06/2021 05:12

It's never sunny enough to open the curtains anyway!

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 17/06/2021 05:41

I am grateful when my neighbour opposite keeps her curtains shut, because there is less risk of an accidental sighting of her, or her husband, flitting about naked. 😁
We keep the curtains closed when the sun is too bright, and open them when it moves round.
I didn't think anyone would notice, let alone think it odd.
Another neighbour keeps her front curtains closed to deter her dog from barking, like a previous poster. It doesn't work, but she tries.

RealisticSketch · 17/06/2021 07:12

My lovely kind neighbour kept her curtains closed permanently as they were out of reach behind a large sofa and she was extremely overweight and couldn't reach them. Her house was in perpetual twilight and it can't have helped her depression as she was at home most of the time which in turn made her struggle to create positive changes. Thankfully she made the biggest one which was to get rid of her awful partner and everything changed for the better after that. Don't see her now, she moved to a nicer place, but I like to think her curtains are opened joyfully to welcome the light in each morning now.
