AIBU to wonder why men are such shmucks

Just been on a longish bus/ tube/ overground journey and couldn't help noticing that the vast majority of those either not wearing masks or wearing them under their chin/ over their mouth only are men.

Obviously there are exceptions to this but my non scientific poll indicates that being a mask shmuck is largely a man thing. I just don't believe that all of them have exemptions unless being a man is an automatic pass to ignore the rules.

All I got from my teenage sons was 'it is because they are shmucks' but is it just this or is there some biological imperative that makes them behave this way.

Answers welcome ....

Some men.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/06/2021 12:07

I was glad to get on the central line this morning and see the three blokes in my particular bit of carriage were doing this. It meant I could forgive putting mine on too.

It’s sweltering and I’m pregnant and not particularly convinced a dirty bit of cloth is going to be much protection, plus we were socially distanced, so I take the mask breaks where I can.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/06/2021 12:07

*forgo not forgive

User135644 · 16/06/2021 12:09

Maybe because women are easy targets to be shouted at or given shit for not complying, whereas a big burly man feels invincible.

PixieDust28 · 16/06/2021 12:09

Hmm.

Overdueanamechange · 16/06/2021 12:09

I've noticed this too. They think not wearing a mask makes them look Badass, when actually they look like an inconsiderate twat.

BlackberrySky · 16/06/2021 12:10

I was on the bus yesterday, three people not wearing masks correctly, all women 🙅‍♀️

SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/06/2021 12:11

*my mask wasn’t dirty. It was freshly laundered but still not particularly welcome over my face in the heat. I do see a lot of dirty masks though 🤢

Hont1986 · 16/06/2021 12:13

It's sweltering and they're probably already vaccinated. The mask might be giving them a negligible benefit for a significant inconvenience. So the real question is, why are women such shmucks for putting up with it and not acting for their own comfort?

LittleTiger007 · 16/06/2021 12:13

I think it was a coincidence, women are just as capable of being schmucks. (I am a woman …just saying)

PurpleDaisies · 16/06/2021 12:17

This does not match what I’ve noticed at at.

Probably this - though when I've been on buses and trains it usually middle aged/older women wearing them under their chin.

I've noticed younger people of both sexes seem to wear them much more. I know teen DDs and their friends have had much more aggresive comments directed to them even with them obeying all the rules.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 16/06/2021 12:36

Thing is it is not about whether you are vaccinated or don't believe in them. It's the rules. A condition of carriage. What makes these (mostly but not exclusively) men believe that they have a higher right to decide. I'm genuinely interested. I wear a mask because it says I have to to travel on the train and also because it is altruistic in nature ie it protects others not me. The whole system relies on altruism really .... is it just that these (mostly) men only care about themselves?

Men are generally more risk-taking than women

It has served our culture well that men break the rules sometimes

It's a macho thing.

Grown adults using public transport are generally shmucks, especially in a near 30 degree heatwave.

Ermmm... so I take it you are lucky enough to drive/afford a car/not have to work on hot days. What an odd thing to say!
SmidgenofaPigeon · 16/06/2021 13:30

@vimtosogood how ridiculously short/sighted of you.

I live in London and have no interest in owning a car, but should I simply call my boss and say it’s a bit hot so I’m not able to get onto the tube?

No I factored for living in that dump too.
Could your boss let you work from home? It should be the new norm for office workers.

So men start wars, and that’s been good for us? Not seeing it!

hamstersarse · 16/06/2021 13:46

@Naunet

We declared war on Hitler

That was probably quite good for us, no?

The MAN, Hitler! That’s the point. If Hitler hadn’t been so keen for power and to take risks, there would have been no war.

Ha ha. I love that being an arrogant twazzock who doesn't feel the need to wear a mask is a demonstration of our proud national history. Confused
