AIBU to wonder why men are such shmucks

108 replies

DownToTheSeaAgain · 16/06/2021 11:57

Just been on a longish bus/ tube/ overground journey and couldn't help noticing that the vast majority of those either not wearing masks or wearing them under their chin/ over their mouth only are men.

Obviously there are exceptions to this but my non scientific poll indicates that being a mask shmuck is largely a man thing. I just don't believe that all of them have exemptions unless being a man is an automatic pass to ignore the rules.

All I got from my teenage sons was 'it is because they are shmucks' but is it just this or is there some biological imperative that makes them behave this way.

Answers welcome ....

“It's not always arrogance, exempt people do exist.”

But they’re wearing jt under their chins must of the times so not exempt otherwise they wouldn’t be wearing it at all.

@BlatantlyNameChanged

Maybe men are better at risk assessment generally?

Various statistics, not to mention crime rates and A&E attendance figures, would say not.

Why aren't we allowed fully vaccinated people to ditch the pointless face rags like the US do? We allow people to buy sunflower lanyards from eBay for £3.99
From my understanding, vaccinated people can still carry and pass on COVID, so it’s to help protect others.
MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 16/06/2021 14:54

I was in the maternity unity on Monday. Sweltering in a room with 8/9 other women, all wearing masks, all pregnant, all not twats.

The sunflower lanyard is to show you’re exempt.
The sunflower lanyard isn't to show you're exempt, it is to show you have a hidden disability and you may need additional support, that was until idiots co-opted it as a "I can do what I want" pass. It's infuriating.

BlatantlyNameChanged · 16/06/2021 15:00

But they’re wearing jt under their chins must of the times so not exempt otherwise they wouldn’t be wearing it at all.

Variable conditions. My mum has several conditions that make wearing a mask difficult, she wears one when she can for as long as she can then when it gets too much/starts making her feel unwell she either pulls it down for a break or takes it off completely (depending on how much of a break she needs).

From my understanding, vaccinated people can still carry and pass on COVID, so it’s to help protect others.

As far as I'm aware, there is a growing body of research showing that vaccinated people do not pass it on as easily as unvaccinated people do.

And if that research is found to be conclusive, then we could look at those who have been vaccinated, not wearing masks, but until then, isn’t it better to have consideration for others?

@hamstersarse

Men are generally more risk-taking than women

It has served our culture well that men break the rules sometimes

Do you not think that historically it is more likely than men are less punished than women for breaking rules. Rule breaking in men is forgiven and seen as daring, whereas in women would have been seen as "being her station" "not knowing her place" etc
osbertthesyrianhamster · 16/06/2021 15:06

I'm so glad I don't have to use public transport. I give not a fuck what others are doing regarding face masks. They give me acne. I hate them.

User135644 · 16/06/2021 15:07

So men start wars, and that’s been good for us? Not seeing it!

The ones that didn't go had white feathers thrown at them.

So why is it mostly a certain type of man on a tube that have these variable conditions.

Because give people an inch in this country and they take a mile. Everyone would just say they're vaccinated whether they are or not.

I doubt these men have the lanyards though. They want you to challenge them so they can go nuclear on you. The type of prats who were in that BBC journalists face yesterday.

Yes. Why? Apart from being proud celebrants of our nations military history is there any other explanation that doesn't involve them being schmucks?

@sillysmiles

One word. Testosterone.

If you are one of those blank slaters, I’m sure that’ll trigger you....but science n all that...testosterone levels and risk taking go hand in hand

VeniVidiWeeWee · 16/06/2021 16:40

schmuck
noun [ C ] mainly US informal
UK /ʃmʌk/ US /ʃmʌk/

a stupid or silly person:

Does that include anyone who can't spell "schmuck"?

Just ask them. No point asking us to guess!
DownToTheSeaAgain · 16/06/2021 17:20

Oddly enough @CheeseIsATypeOfMeat I quite like my face. I've got used to it. I fear that asking directly might mean it doesn't suit me so much any more.

Anyway isn't this sort of pressing issue what the hive mind of AIBU is for?

I had a meeting at work last Thursday, there was one colleague not wearing a mask, she won’t wear them as they may ruin her makeup (she is also a covid denier). As I’m not stupid I didn’t then decide that women don’t wear masks.

When masks do go I’m going to have to make sure I’m not walking around with my mouth hanging open.

I thought it was for mocking and bashing the Op! No, you're right. But it's all just guess work and it's easier to pretend these 'mask less men' are assholes and don't care then actually finding out why they don't wear one. You'll probably find they are all lovely people.

Apologies Mike, you’re right of course. I do just assume if someone is wearing the lanyard that they cannot wear a mask for whatever reason but yes it’s not the original purpose of them at all.
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/06/2021 17:34

I’ve seen women, too.

Most notably the one on the bus, who was yakking away 19 to the dozen to her friend for the whole journey - or at least until I got off - with her mask on her chin.

For the first time ever I did say something as I was getting off. ‘You know it’s no use wearing a mask unless it covers your nose and mouth?’

‘Oh, I know,’ she said, not at all put out. ‘But it steams up my glasses.’

Such twits are everywhere, alas.
