To love the 2p machines

Honestly, it’s monotonous, you gain nothing and is low level gambling but they incredibly exciting to me. I might win a tacky key chain, some cheap chocolate or if I’m really lucky - a bunch of tickets I’ll never ‘cash in’ because you need a million before you can actually buy anything with them.

I’m planning a weekend trip away with DP and DS3 to the seaside soon and I’ve asked that I can dropped off in the nearest arcade for 2 hours with my ever-growing stash of 2p whilst he takes DS out to swim and get ice cream. He’s agreed (reluctantly) but he thinks I’m mad. But I can’t be alone, right, as they still have them in arcades?!

(For reference, I do like other more ‘cultural’ and nature things too, but this is one of those frivolous, wasteful things I like to do - but honestly, in 2 hours the most I’m likely to spend is £10-£15).

Am I U, and more importantly am I alone in this?

No, you're not U.

I love 'em too ! I got £1 in 2p pieces. That's fifty in all. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed playing the old fashioned 'cake walk' and 'one armed bandit' machines.

We didn't win anything but it was the best pounds worth of entertainment I've ever had !

FindMeInTheSunshine · 09/06/2021 17:44

I love them too! But, I thought they are all 10p nowConfused

neonorchid · 09/06/2021 17:46

I love the 2p machines. I'm planning on taking the kids to the seaside one day to get rid of the jar full we have of them

hels71 · 09/06/2021 17:47

If DD and i go to the seaside we always go on the 2p machines! We love them!!!

My trip to Hunstanton (woo!) last year had lots of arcades with 2p machines but yes, the 10ps are becoming more common. I feel like 10p is escalating into a gambling problem but 2p is just fritting Wink

Bloody hell I would rather watch paint dry. Sound excruciatingly boring! But if you like it, why not.

romany4 · 09/06/2021 17:49

Yanbu.
I still get a tub of 2ps and enjoy myself and I'm nearly 50!

Spied · 09/06/2021 17:50

Ds and I spent about £20 in the arcade at the beach last weekend.
Mostly on the 2p machines.
I also love the horse race gameSmile

sayanythingelse · 09/06/2021 17:51

Haha we live by the seaside, so I'm in them weekly. They are good, harmless fun.

I think our favourite one is being very generous since reopening as I got 1000 tickets out of one machine and 750 out of another. DD was very happy with her My Little Pony prizes.

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 09/06/2021 17:53

Taking the kids to a caravan for the weekend - we've had a few trips away since lockdown ended but this is the first where the arcades will be open, I think I'm as excited as they are. I've got a big bag of 2ps ready. The coin push machines are my absolute favourite.

IncessantNameChanger · 09/06/2021 17:53

I'm with you OP. I love it and I'm happy to loose some cash chasing down a piece of plastic tat. It's pointless fun

Herecomesanothernamechange · 09/06/2021 17:53

YANBU
DGM used to take us to the penny arcade when we were young, I’d spend hours on those machines.
It doesn’t feel like too big a loss when you are just pumping in 2p pieces. Sadly lots of them are now 10p unless you find an arcade with really old machines in.

Bloodylovecheese · 09/06/2021 17:53

Omg...I not only love the 2p machines ...I love tipping point on tv too Grin

AnAwesomePossum · 09/06/2021 17:56

I am so glad I’m not alone in this! I grew up from a poor background with our holidays being in caravans or a couple of years, the Pontins apartments and giving each of us a pound or two in an arcade was a cheap and easy way to entertain us.

DP went cannoning in Dordogne on his summer holidays so I don’t think he quite understands.

I think up north the machines are still mainly 2p, there are 10p ones but not as many. I still love a go too, you’re not alone

PhillipPhillop · 09/06/2021 17:58

Yep, whole family are addicts. We have a pound's worth each and a competition to see whose lasts the longest.

AnAwesomePossum · 09/06/2021 18:00

I love the idea of making it a competition. That would put some fun is DP. Though I suspect DS will run out quickly as he hasn’t got the technique down yet

CeeJay81 · 09/06/2021 18:04

Yep me too!! I esp love them when we go to Have, "Winner Winner". Can be really addictive. I'll go round looking at them all and trying to find the best ones to get something out of.

FelicityBeedle · 09/06/2021 18:04

My young cousins stack them in the slot and do the machine gun effect, drives me mad!

CeeJay81 · 09/06/2021 18:04

Haven that's meant to say!

MissCruellaDeVil · 09/06/2021 18:05

I love these, there is a small independent shop in my local town that has loads of retro arcade games, including the 2p machine, when I was younger there was a 1p machine, not seen them since!

AfternoonToffee · 09/06/2021 18:05

YANBU it's just a little moment of fun. I save up my 2ps and then off we go. They usually end up with a tiny gift either dropping out or with the tickets.

HunterAngel · 09/06/2021 18:06

I love the 2p machines! Absolute waste of time but fun all the same!
