To love the 2p machines

Honestly, it’s monotonous, you gain nothing and is low level gambling but they incredibly exciting to me. I might win a tacky key chain, some cheap chocolate or if I’m really lucky - a bunch of tickets I’ll never ‘cash in’ because you need a million before you can actually buy anything with them.

I’m planning a weekend trip away with DP and DS3 to the seaside soon and I’ve asked that I can dropped off in the nearest arcade for 2 hours with my ever-growing stash of 2p whilst he takes DS out to swim and get ice cream. He’s agreed (reluctantly) but he thinks I’m mad. But I can’t be alone, right, as they still have them in arcades?!

(For reference, I do like other more ‘cultural’ and nature things too, but this is one of those frivolous, wasteful things I like to do - but honestly, in 2 hours the most I’m likely to spend is £10-£15).

Am I U, and more importantly am I alone in this?

We love to feed as many In as fast as possible, we always seem to win that way.

MaryBoBary · 09/06/2021 19:24

I had never tried a 2p machine until the age of about 25. My OH had to drag me away - I loved them! It's shameful to see at the end of it all you've won enough tickets for a packet of love hearts, and spent £5+ for the pleasure in the process.

But I love it Smile

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/06/2021 19:24

Yes, love em

queenrollo · 09/06/2021 19:29

I love them too and will admit to going at least once a year on my own so I don't have to share with my 8 year old who has NO technique Grin

I grew up at the seaside and have never liked bandits or any of the other machines, which way too many of my friends got addicted to. But I do love a 2p frenzy!

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 09/06/2021 20:42

2p machines are my idea of heaven!!!!!! But no one else seems to think that way. Can’t wait for nasty COVID to be over and spend a day at the seaside arcades

littlebillie · 09/06/2021 23:01

I love them the best arcade was in at St Ives I had to be dragged out Blush

Merchymor · 09/06/2021 23:03

I love them, they remind me if my first proper date when I was 16

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 09/06/2021 23:34

I bloody LOVE the 2p machines! There's just something so satisfying about working out the timing of the shover to maximise the effect of your coins - and no, I don't care if I don't win the my little pony keyring, it's just purely mesmerising to see the wave of coins edge ever closer towards you.

Sheringham, by the way. Sheringham is where you need to be for the 2p machines. There are two arcades, and both have about 30 2p machines of various styles.

gleegeek · 09/06/2021 23:37

YANBU! Dd and I love the tuppenny falls! We spend about £5 between us and usually come away with some tat to use for geocaching. I've been doing them for nearly 50 years now and the novelty still hasn't worn off... I love Tipping Point tooGrin

TonytheDog · 09/06/2021 23:38

I love the 2p Penny Falls, the plastic tub full of hope, eyeing up the other machines .... should I switch? But what if the one I'm on is just about heave all of those 2ps over the edge???
I do t think I'd play if it went up to 10p because that would eat serious money but a £1 worth of 2ps seems less so.

I also love the grab machines and may have once spent a small fortune trying to win DD a bear.

ahtellthee · 09/06/2021 23:44

It's one of our favorite things to do. DC and I each get £1 worth and then we have a competition to see who can go the longest, (or lose the quickest).

All good fun.

We NEVER play the 10p machines though.
We aren't frivolous...

55378OO8 · 10/06/2021 00:03

I love the 2p machines, I never ever go on the 10p ones though (does anyone?). Dp is a sucker for the grabber machines.

bitheby · 10/06/2021 00:09

I love them too. I'm hardly ever at the seaside but when I am I'll do a £1s worth. I often think of them randomly actually. I probably play once every 4 years so I don't think I'm addicted.

altamory · 10/06/2021 00:12

@AnAwesomePossum

My trip to Hunstanton (woo!) last year had lots of arcades with 2p machines but yes, the 10ps are becoming more common. I feel like 10p is escalating into a gambling problem but 2p is just fritting Wink
I so agree with this!!
MrsW150917 · 10/06/2021 06:58

I get so territorial of my machine especially if I'm about to run out and there's a heavy chunk on the edge with a sparkly keyring dangling over. If I need the change machine I won't leave if there's a little kid lurking round watching my machine 🤣🤣

MrsW150917 · 10/06/2021 07:19

Or when there's someone just as territorial on the machine next to you. I have the theme tune from a cowboy gunfight in my head. Eyeing each other's ledge up and casting your eyes across to their pot to see if they're running low too!
😂😂
I literally could spend hours on them I love them! My husband ends up walking out and I have to call him to see where he's gone lol

My favourite amusements is Coral Island in Blackpool

PixieDust28 · 10/06/2021 07:28

We go to Southsea arcades regularly. Sometimes in the summer we go in the evening and there are so many 2p machines. We love them!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 10/06/2021 07:36

I love them so much! I like going round and seeing which ones are ready to pay out their key rings or bonus ticket vouchers. And the waterfall sound of the 2ps falling!

I also really enjoy the skeeball, hoopla and down the clowns machines. Any sideshow games that aren't rigged and where you can do well with a little bit of skill.

More than anything though, I love my specialist talent, the roll-a-ball camels and kentucky derbies. Deep breath, get in the ball-rolling zone and it's a win every time. When I'm rich I'm going to buy myself one to sit and play all the time.

ConnectedToSandsview · 10/06/2021 07:36

They are awesome. We have a day trip to the seaside whenever I’m back in the UK just so I can play. Sometimes we even take my nieces so it looks like it’s not just me and my dad with low key gambling addiction.

We also love shouting at tipping point. The number of contestants that have clearly never played on the 2p machines is crazy. As a PP said - no technique.

It takes a lot of skill and practice to excel at the 2p machine.

clouds87 · 10/06/2021 07:46

Op I grew up in on caravan holidays ...... nothing wrong with ‘sunny hunny’ Hunstanton Cromer sheringham...best holidays ever with the 2p machines!

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/06/2021 07:50

I love them too. Its just not the same when the use 10p coins. I think it's the fact that the cost is so low its just fun.

bigbluebus · 10/06/2021 08:02

When the Government announced possibly phasing out 1p and 2p coins my first thought was nooooo what about my arcade machines!

I will admit to enjoying a very competitive game of air hockey in the arcades too - usually manage to thrash DH. Not that I had a misspent youth!!

Frazzlefrazle · 10/06/2021 08:07

We love them! If you are going to Hunstanton don't go to the pier one it's really crammed and you'll win nothing head to the yellow smaller one just to the left near the pub that over looks the beach. My girls use pocket money from grandad and absolutely love winning total rubbish Grin they won loads of those new fidget things last month.

Confusedandshaken · 10/06/2021 08:28

It's such a coincidence you posted this today because DS has just posted a throwback clip of the D.C. and DH enjoying a very competitive game of something or other in an arcade a few years ago. I can remember the holiday but not the event because I absolutely hate amusement arcades (the noise, the flashing lights, the tat) and so I would have been lying on the beach or sitting in the bar with my kindle while they were there. I did feel a bit left out looking at how much fun they all had but I know that next time we are at a resort the same thing will happen.

YANBU at all to do this but be prepared that at some point in the future your D.C. might want to join you and your DH will be the solitary one.

Animum2 · 10/06/2021 08:35

I do this as well, I don't care that I'm not winning loads of money I just enjoy playing
