To want a plastic card

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:14

Recently lost my purse and needed to replace all my cards.

John Lewis, morrisons, M and S and Boots all don’t offer a card any more. Instead you access your account via your phone.

It’s such a faff. Instead of opening my purse and paying I have to fumble for my phone, unlock it (not easy with a face mask) find the app, find the card.

I’d far rather just have the card there.

I'm with you. My Waterstones loyalty card is on the app and I hate fiddling around with my phone at the till. I try to remember to load up the QR thing before then, but I usually have my hands full of books.

I think Waterstones does give you a physical card if you request one though (again, I never remember). Is there definitely no option to do that?

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 07/06/2021 19:20

I’m the opposite. I prefer them on my phone - I sometimes struggle to find my purse as I never use it anymore.
But ask whether they do a physical card - they may offer it just not as standard

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:21

No and it’s really annoying!

OP posts:
crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:21

They don’t - I rang up to ask.

That's really poor. There are significant numbers of people without a smartphone.

Yafilthyanimal · 07/06/2021 19:27

Try the stocard app.

You can put all of your loyalty cards on one app.

I don't think that will help the OP at all.

Read her description of her phone interaction.

Hmm
jendifer · 07/06/2021 19:30

I have the Sto card app which holds all the cards on one place rather than apps for each. Might be worth a try?

lljkk · 07/06/2021 19:33

DS often pulling down mask to unlock his phone in shop... I am grateful nobody snapped at him!

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:35

Well, I do have it but it doesn’t really help - frantically trying to find the one I want!

It was so simple to just have my boots card and debit card to hand!

Morrisons have just annoyed me full stop. Not only have they stopped actual cards and paper vouchers in favour of all being on your smart phone (which my elderly parents dont have), I used to save all the £5 vouchers for a splurge at Christmas. Cant do that any more as any money off comes off bill automatically as you spend. I saved £5 on a shop last week and didnt even notice till I looked at the receipt later on. Not as nice as saving up the £'s for a special occasion.

WTFisNext · 07/06/2021 19:37

If I can't have a card then they'll stop being able to see my spending habits. I'm not faffing with extra apps on my phone, that storage space is for me to take oodles of photos, not to be a replacement for a card!

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:37

And you can no longer use the more card for fuel.

whiskersonkittenss · 07/06/2021 19:39

If you have an iPhone with face recognition you can add an "alternative appearance", I think this would allow people to unlock whilst wearing a mask if they used this option to add another photo. Hth someone

Oblomov21 · 07/06/2021 19:40

Presumably this will become more and more the norm. Oh dear.

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:40

Thanks whiskers, I still just want the card, though!

YANBU. I do wonder what will happen as each generation ages and struggles to use any new technology. Memories fade, arthritis can set in, eyesight is poor - yet we will all be expected to use phones for everything. It's fine when you're younger, but we all get old eventually (if we're lucky).

It doesn’t work with a mask, I’ve tried it. It tells you that your features are obscured.
whiskersonkittenss · 07/06/2021 19:43

Oh that's a shame

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:44

I do wonder how face recognition works for identical twins

OP posts:
Bitofachinwag · 07/06/2021 19:45

Well, people who don't want to faff or who don't have a smartphone will just shop elsewhere!

There's no way I'd give my face to Apple! ( or whoever makes iphones)

As I have identical twins I can tell you - not very well is the answer! Google home and Alex also get their voices confused as well.

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:51

That’s really interesting!

@Yafilthyanimal

Try the stocard app.

I second that - it’s fabulous! You can have them all on one app, even National Trust, English Heritage etc. Nowadays, all I need when I go shopping, is my phone.
