To want a plastic card

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:14

Recently lost my purse and needed to replace all my cards.

John Lewis, morrisons, M and S and Boots all don’t offer a card any more. Instead you access your account via your phone.

It’s such a faff. Instead of opening my purse and paying I have to fumble for my phone, unlock it (not easy with a face mask) find the app, find the card.

I’d far rather just have the card there.

I recently had similar when renewing my Dad's senior railcard. Trainline.com only do fully digital railcards. My 80yr old Dad can barely use his ancient phone to make / receive calls and has no idea what an App is and has no internet. Luckily I found plastic elsewhere but it was more of a faff than it needed to be.

It was so simple to just have my boots card and debit card to hand!

I find that being able to scan my loyalty card and pay via Google Pay all through my phone, no purse required, is just as simple.

Why can't you have your loyalty card handy before the till now that it's on your phone? If you know you're in Morrisons then just open the app when you go in, or while waiting in the queue at the till.

I have an android and use the Stocard app. I have it set to recognise when I am in a location where I have a loyalty card stored and it will let me open the app directly to the specific loyalty card from my lock screen (eg if I'm in Tesco then when I get to the checkout I click the Stocard widget and it automatically opens my Tesco Clubcard)

Ozanj · 07/06/2021 20:12

I find it easier just loading all my most regularly usednstore cards on my apple wallet and using touch id and scroll to go through them.

AnnaSW1 · 07/06/2021 20:17

I'm with you. I also want the plastic straws back on my kids smoothies!!! The paper ones do not do the job!

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 07/06/2021 20:26

Can you put them in your 'wallet' on your phone? Incidentally if you have apple watch it can unlock your phone even with face mask on. Prob missing the point here ...

jsp5642 · 07/06/2021 20:28

That's bizarre. I can't use a smartphone for accessibility reasons, so that's me up a gum tree for loyalty cards.

littlepattilou · 07/06/2021 20:29

@crinklyfoil YANBU.

I still have the Morrisons card and they are accepting it at the moment, as is Boots. (I don't have any others.)

When they stop doing them, I won't be arsed to put anything on my smartphone. I get hardly any benefit from them anyway. I realised not long back, that I have to spend £1000 in Morrisons to get a voucher for £5. Such bollocks. Boots isn't much better. I seem to spend money at least once or twice a week, all year in there, before I get a £2.50 credit.

Not worth bothering with. Plus, somewhere, someone is storing all the information of what you buy. Doesn't really affect my life, but fuck it, why do they need to know? So they can send me vouchers for stuff I never use, or a £2-off voucher, that I can only use if I spend £60! Nah mate.

Yes to this! I buy the Innocent children's portion ones. The packs of 4 have paper ones but I got a box of 10 today from Morrisons and they're still plastic. I might have to bulk buy!!
Blossomtoes · 07/06/2021 20:34

I’ve currently got nearly £50 on my Boots card, I’d better hurry up and use it by the look of things!

Exhausted4ever · 07/06/2021 20:38

I don't see how it's really that difficult to unlock your phone and get an ap open tbh. If you usually use face ID it still has a password or fingerprint option too. I use Google pay to store loyalty cards and its very quick and easy to use. That said I don't think anyone should be forced to use an app version of anything. As mentioned by pp a lot of elderly people, as well as those who are ND, will not be able to use smart phones

FaceyRomford · 07/06/2021 20:39

@HeyDemonsItsYaGirl

That's really poor. There are significant numbers of people without a smartphone.
Yep. You'd be amazed at the shocked looks I get when I tell people I can't use the app as my 10 year old Samsung can't cope with them. I can make calls, receive calls and text. It's all I need.

That's really bad
Exhausted4ever · 07/06/2021 20:39

I also want plastic straws back! They disintegrate before you can actually finish using them now they are made of blinking paper

MintyMabel · 07/06/2021 20:47

There's no way I'd give my face to Apple! ( or whoever makes iphones)

Which isn’t how face recognition works. 😆

I love the apps. Much better than having a purse bulging with cards.

Curlygirl06 · 07/06/2021 21:03

@crinklyfoil

I do wonder how face recognition works for identical twins
I can tell you that! My girls are twins and when face id first started they tried it, and depending how they angled their head it worked most times.
Ladylimpet · 07/06/2021 21:12

You can get a plastic card from Morrisons. I ordered one online when I registered about a week ago. You get to a page which tells you about not sending a card as they are doing their bit for the environment. But it says in small writing somewhere that you can still have a card.
The app is a right faff! Tried to access it at the till, and the bloody thing logged me out, and then I had to have a security code emailed to me to log me back in again!! It's done that a few times.
The offers are a bit shit now. Took me a few trips to even get a couple of offers to activate.

idontlikealdi · 07/06/2021 21:31

My cards are all in my wallet I just do face recognition and it's ready to go.

catwithflowers · 07/06/2021 22:10

@Blossomtoes Have you heard any rumours that Boots are stopping their points? 😱. I hope not as I've been saving up for some perfume for ages and have about £80 now!!!

HURRY UP AND GET IT!

No but if they’re taking it all online I won’t be using my points. I need to get rid of them while I can still use my card.

AnnaSW1 · 07/06/2021 22:16

@theresarugonmyfloor thanks for the tip. yep it's the same ones.. I'll pop in there!

Thelnebriati · 07/06/2021 22:19

A lot of disabled people need plastic cards. We can't all get facial recognition to work, or use QR codes.

Well not quite!

I like my bulging purse.

ChrissyPlummer · 07/06/2021 22:26

@Exhausted4ever My iPhone (a 7) only offers face recognition. It has no ‘home’ button anymore so nowhere to put a fingerprint. It does still do the passcode option to pay, but this takes longer and sometimes goes back to the wallet app, causing more faff!
