To want a plastic card

crinklyfoil · 07/06/2021 19:14

Recently lost my purse and needed to replace all my cards.

John Lewis, morrisons, M and S and Boots all don’t offer a card any more. Instead you access your account via your phone.

It’s such a faff. Instead of opening my purse and paying I have to fumble for my phone, unlock it (not easy with a face mask) find the app, find the card.

I’d far rather just have the card there.

Honestly, I rarely actually enter a shop to buy anything any more. I order almost everything online.

Ok so we have had a new morrisons card this week and I’ve had a new boots one Very recently , I only shop online at John Lewis due to distance and don’t use Waterstones so cannot comment on those but you have definitely been misinformed by the first two.

I do wonder how face recognition works for identical twins
I can answer that. My boys can unlock each other's phones will facial recognition. They've got fingerprint recognition on too to stop the other taking ridiculous photos

I’ll chase that up with Boots. How recently? The man was adamant no plastic cards. Just annoying as I can’t send DP on a Boots run and get points!

And thanks for the answers re identical twins - quite bad really! I mean I’m sure your twins are all lovely but this is surely a flaw.

I agree, I prefer to use a card. If nothing else, I’m terrible at remembering to charge my phone.

Thehop · 08/06/2021 08:49

Download an app called stocard it keeps all your store cards in one place.

My smartphone is so old it doesn't usually support new apps any more.

I'm not paying out for a new one when the current one works for what I actually want it for (calls, internet, instant messaging).

It saves all these companies harvesting my data, so I can live without a few loyalty points (or in the case of John Lewis, a free coffee and cake once a quarter).

Akire · 08/06/2021 09:04

They have to offer a plastic card for those who can’t manage a smart phone ie disabilities or don’t have an up to date phone or any phone. Unless there are large percentages of the populations who’s data they are not keen to collect at all. Let’s not beat about they get more out of it than we do or else why would they bother?

LondonJax · 08/06/2021 09:24

@crinklyfoil you can still get Boots 'proper' loyalty cards. I got one recently as I have an older phone so some apps don't work on it.

This is from their website FAQs and is exactly what I did...

What happens if my Boots Advantage Card is lost, stolen or damaged?
In order to replace your lost/stolen/damaged Advantage Card you will need to log in to your Boots.com account and head to 'Manage my Advantage Card'. Once you have selected the reason for replacing your card an instant digital Advantage Card will be created and added to your account. If you want to replace with a plastic card then simply pick one up when you're next in store and link this to your Boots account.

You can access these options via the Boots app too, just be sure to remove your existing card before adding your new card number.

CounsellorTroi · 08/06/2021 09:50

I don’t bother with the actual cards, I put the keyfobs on my front door key ring.

@crinklyfoil my identical twin can unlock my phone for me

You can get a plastic card from Morrisons. I ordered one online when I registered about a week ago. You get to a page which tells you about not sending a card as they are doing their bit for the environment. But it says in small writing somewhere that you can still have a card.
That "doing their bit for the environment" is phooey. As someone said upthread, the National Trust send out (what appear to be) plastic cards made of paper. Morrisons could do, too. If they wanted.Hmm However, they do seem to be doing some backtracking due to customer resistance.

I don't want apps on my phone. I don't want to be a data-source in return for tuppence ha'penny once in a blue moon.
I just say no.

theresarugonmyfloor · 08/06/2021 11:26

On the subject of face recognition, both of my children (5 and 2!) can unlock my phone using the fingerprint recognition (iPhone).

We must have very similar thumb prints!!

I don't want to only be able to order online. I barely leave the house these days anyway. Town centres completely bereft of shops are rather joyless IMO.
