AIBU to ask someone to please direct me to the CREEPIEST story I’ve ever heard on MN, about someone who was house sitting in a forest and then a dog got out... if you’ve read the story, you’ll know it. Much to my OH’s annoyance I was up till about 1am trawling the woo threads in Classics but couldn’t find it 😫

OP posts:
CovidCorvid · 06/06/2021 07:51

I also remember a thread/post where a MNer worked/lived on a farm and the lambs and sheep were getting killed. The farmer assumed a dog and lay in wait for it with a gun. The sheep killer turned up and it was more some form of werewolf. Scared the farmer shitless.

@GoodbyeToCare

I read a Slender Man story on here years ago and it freaked me out. Something about the Slender Man following her home on the opposite side of the street?

Wasn't there another snow one where a poster had been a childminder in a chalet and there were footprints all around the outside of the chalet but no one had been there?

Do you mean the Smiling Man?

Five years ago I lived downtown in a major city in the US. I've always been a night person, so I would often find myself bored after my roommate, who was decidedly not a night person, went to sleep. To pass the time, I used to go for long walks and spend the time thinking.

I spent four years like that, walking alone at night, and never once had a reason to feel afraid. I always used to joke with my roommate that even the drug dealers in the city were polite. But all of that changed in just a few minutes of one evening.

It was a Wednesday, somewhere between one and two in the morning, and I was walking near a police-patrolled park quite a ways from my apartment. It was a quiet night, even for a weeknight, with very little traffic and almost no one on foot. The park, as it was most nights, was completely empty.

I turned down a short side-street in order to loop back to my apartment when I first noticed him. At the far end of the street, on my side, was the silhouette of a man, dancing. It was a strange dance, similar to a waltz, but he finished each "box" with an odd forward stride. I guess you could say he was dance-walking, headed straight for me.

Deciding he was probably drunk, I stepped as close as I could to the road to give him the majority of the sidewalk to pass me by. The closer he got, the more I realized how gracefully he was moving. He was very tall and lanky, and wearing an old suit. He danced closer still, until I could make out his face. His eyes were open wide and wild, head tilted back slightly, looking off at the sky. His mouth was formed in a painfully wide cartoon of a smile. Between the eyes and the smile, I decided to cross the street before he danced any closer.

I took my eyes off of him to cross the empty street. As I reached the other side, I glanced back... and then stopped dead in my tracks. He had stopped dancing and was standing with one foot in the street, perfectly parallel to me. He was facing me but still looking skyward, smile still wide on his lips.

I was completely and utterly unnerved by this. I started walking again, but kept my eyes on the man. He didn't move. Once I had put about half a block between us, I turned away from him for a moment to watch the sidewalk in front of me. The street and sidewalk ahead of me were completely empty. Still unnerved, I looked back to where he had been standing to find him gone. For the briefest of moments I felt relieved, until I noticed him. He had crossed the street, and was now slightly crouched down. I couldn't tell for sure due to the distance and the shadows, but I was certain he was facing me. I had looked away from him for no more than ten seconds, so it was clear that he had moved fast.

I was so shocked that I stood there for some time, staring at him. And then he started moving toward me again. He took giant, exaggerated tip-toed steps, as if he were a cartoon character sneaking up on someone. Except he was moving very, very quickly.

I'd like to say at this point I ran away or pulled out my pepper spray or my cellphone or anything at all, but I didn't. I just stood there, completely frozen as the smiling man crept toward me.

And then he stopped again, about a car length away from me. Still smiling his smile, still looking to the sky.

When I finally found my voice, I blurted out the first thing that came to mind. What I meant to ask was, "What do you want?!" in an angry, commanding tone. What came out was a whimper: "Whaaat…?"

Regardless of whether or not humans can smell fear, they can certainly hear it. I heard it in my own voice, and that only made me more afraid. But he didn't react to it at all. He just stood there, smiling.

And then, after what felt like forever, he turned around, very slowly, and started dance-walking away. Just like that. Not wanting to turn my back to him again, I just watched him go, until he was far enough away to almost be out of sight. And then I realized something. He wasn't moving away anymore, nor was he dancing. I watched in horror as the distant shape of him grew larger and larger. He was coming back my way. And this time he was running.

I ran too.

I ran until I was off of the side-road and back onto a better lit road with sparse traffic. Looking behind me then, he was nowhere to be found. The rest of the way home, I kept glancing over my shoulder, always expecting to see his stupid smile, but he was never there.

I lived in that city for six months after that night, and I never went out for another walk. There was something about his face that always haunted me. He didn't look drunk, he didn't look high. He looked completely and utterly insane. And that's a very, very scary thing to see.

thecatsthecats · 06/06/2021 08:47

There's a story I can never seem to find these days from and American site that scared me shirtless.

Four teens were on their way back from a road trip, nearing their home town. They were in a pretty lively, joking mood, so very relaxed. The road they were travelling was long as straight, a beautiful starry night, and they were the only ones there. Way up ahead, they spot the lights of a car off the side of the road, with a figure moving in and out of the beam.

As they get closer, they see that it's a man, and are surprised when he walks right into the middle of the road as they approach. He's out of the light now, and is more like a shadow. There's something a little off about his posture, but none of them mentions it as they can't put their finger on it. The atmosphere in the car dampens down.

They're not totally naive, so they pull slightly past him and keep the engine running as they ask if he needs help. It's the passenger in the back nearest the figure who suddenly yells, "drive, just fucking drive". Feeling pretty jittery already, the driver does just that, asking what the hell was wrong.

The other kid is just staring out of the back of the car at the figure, who's still standing in the middle of the road. The driver looks in the rear mirror, and it's lucky the road is straight, because he can't take his eyes off it when the man gets down on all fours and starts running towards them. It should be funny, but it isn't.

He starts to punch the accelerator, but to their horror, the man is actually catching up. All three are screaming now, winding up the windows and freaking out, and the kid is doing 80, 90, then 100 miles an hour, but still the figure, now half in the dark, half lit by the red tail lights, seems to be making ground. Even though the windows are shut, they can hear the scuffling, scraping sounds of his hands and feet galloping over the tarmac.

Only when they reach the lights on the edge of town does the creature suddenly halt, sitting on its haunches like a dog, still looking like a man.

They drop their pace a little in the town, but not by much. It's a miracle they don't get stopped. The driver is supposed to drop them all back one by one, but no way is he getting stuck in the car alone. They drive to where the girl has a key to the automatic garage, and don't get out until the door is shut behind them.

8 years ago I saw a UAP above my home. My family were visiting and saw it too. To this day we have never publicly spoken about it.

I live very remotely a couple of miles from the nearest neighbour, serviced only by a long unclassified road that goes on to connect with some farms and then eventually a main road. It is peaceful here and it feels safe at all times even at the dead of night.

In the middle of summer a few years ago I went out into the garden after supper. It was still full light and I looked up to the sky. Moving in a straight line towards the house was a large dark grey irregular shaped craft. As it passed over us we heard no sound at all. It was difficult to guess height or dimension, as there were little external features from which to identify it (I plane spot when aircraft are overhead so I am used to guessing and checking these things on Flightradar). Perhaps the best although uncoventional comparison is that it was about the size of a football field and about 6,000 - 8,000 feet above. One thing for sure - it was engineered, it had propulsion and it was deliberate. The most uncanny thing was the silence. Just gentle gliding silence. Not just the UAP, but also the countryside - the birds normally vocal in the evenings had just stopped. No blackbirds singing from the tree tops and the swallows had all gone to roost far too early.

It had been a hot day and as it was drawing to a close, some tall cumulus clouds were forming. The UAP was moving west and disappeared into a large cloud which restricted our view. We eventually went inside. About 20 minutes later I had to go outside again and walked down the garden and through a glade of trees toward the edge of my property. It overlooks undulating farm land and spread across the land ahead of me as if it had landed was a large shape - light grey semi-translucent some 300 - 500 metres away. It was a rhombus shape from the side about the size of a small factory or supermarket, just perhaps a bit taller in the centre. The strangest thing is that I could see partly through it with what appeared to be the sunset appearing through the patchwork of clouds visible within the UAP. There were also odd vertical and horizontal lines, fractured by light - as if cracks were letting light out from the sides.

I soaked this all in, but did not feel remotely scared. This sense of just having normal observation over something is my strongest memory. I had this sense that what I was looking at had a rational explanation, nothing to worry about just accept it and I would find an explanation. I turned to walk back to the house to get my phone. Then I had a sense the UAP was gone, so I turned and walked back to the edge of the garden. It was no longer there, but the land where it had been was unusually dark in colour even for that time in the evening.

I am a very early riser. The very next morning at around 4:30, I brewed a mug of tea and went out into the garden to enjoy first light. At the top edge of the garden is another cluster of small trees, a low hedge and a gap out into the fields. I walk up to trees to look at the view from that side. I say two heads silhouetted above the hedge line, so I ducked down. A few seconds later I gradually stood up but moved behind some cover to observe what these people were doing. They had not noticed me, and I saw three men dressed in dark gear walking across the field purposely away from the property, two were carrying a long flat case between them. There were tall metal poles stuck into the ground in a single line across the field and they were taking these down. In one spot was a large metal tripod, some mounds of earth and other gear laid out. There is no right of way, the field is miles from anywhere and it all the time I have lived here nobody ever appears in these fields that surround me. I then had a sense of dread and as I looked up the three men had turned round and were looking straight at me. They had hard faces and dark piercing eyes and I felt I needed to get back inside because there was something odd about them.

Later that day, I saw all that was left was the mound of earth. The farmer came later that week and pushed the earth back into the hole. To this day the area around that hole is always damp and a bit boggy despite being on a slope.

@thecatsthecats that's the one! Freaked me out the first time I read it and still gives me the heebiejeebies now!

MsMarshaKlein · 06/06/2021 14:10

A few of you have recommended sending these true horror stories to YouTube. I can personally recommend sending them to Mortis Media who is an excellent U.K. based narrator. He's narrated a couple of my spooky experiences working night shift at both an abandoned psychiatric complex and an abandoned care home and he did an excellent job.

babybabybabybabymother · 06/06/2021 14:25

Oh I love this, I can't read it as I'm alone in the house atm but I'm just posting so I can easily come back later
scary stuff

buffyp · 06/06/2021 15:09

@TailFeatherz

Anybody who finds it scary needs to have a word with themselves

It's a made up story and not remotely frightening

Why do people like you constantly pee all over threads like this? So bloody what if it’s made up? It’s still a good story even if you don’t think so. World would be a boring place if we all thought the same so why don’t you go and have a word with yourself instead.
@thecatsthecats that's the one! Freaked me out the first time I read it and still gives me the heebiejeebies now!
If you're feeling brave, someone has done a film of that one on YouTube!

Whanganui · 06/06/2021 15:49

It sounds very similar to a film that I watched.

GoodbyeToCare · 06/06/2021 16:06

@thecatsthecats I don't think I'm brave enough for that 😧

EastWestWhosBest · 06/06/2021 16:30

The one that really spooked me was where a woman remembered as a child playing in the garden and seeing a woman in the window waving at her. So she waved back.
Fast forward 30 years and the woman is back in her childhood home. She looks out of the window to see a child playing. She waves and the little girl waves back. Then she realises it’s her!

custardbear · 06/06/2021 17:07

There was a story I thought was creepy on a woo thread, I can't remember much detail, but a woman and her partner lived in a rental home and there was a small cupboard at the back of one of the rooms, I think they put coats or something in there. They moved out and went back, I think maybe a friend lived there sometime after and there was no cupboard, not covered up or filled in, just no sign of a cupboard ever being there and there was more about someone confirming no cupboard had ever been there - I'll try to find it ...

Gothichouse40 · 06/06/2021 17:24

Mortis Media is very good, my personal favourite is Beyond Creepy. I think Beyond Creepy might be a Canadian storyteller, his stuff is from some real stories I believe.

CovidCorvid · 06/06/2021 17:47

Creepy pasta is a good site for woo stuff.

I remember that one! An odd area off the kitchen -- unfinished alcove, stone walls, or something like that. Now I want to read it again, too.

It was an alcove I think.

I've told this on here before but it is still something that we can't explain!

When DH and I first moved in together we moved in to a church/monastery that had been demolished apart from the outside and then nice apartments had been built in like the shell of this old building.

We had seen a few apartments up for rent in this building and always missed out on getting one, so when one came up on Rightmove we jumped at the chance to move in and just called the agent and said we'd rent it without viewing first. I know that wasn't a very smart move but this building was beautiful and but he apartments were all similar and we'd seen 5 before now.

We move in and everything is great. It was a duplex apartment with the bedroom and a bathroom upstairs. The downstairs was an open plan area with a big island in the middle with the oven and hob built in to it. At the back of the kitchen was a small alcove/corridor. Maybe about ten steps from the end of the kitchen to the end of this little part. There were two stone steps leading down to it and the floor was stone with old brick walls. We assumed it was just a bit of character left in from the refurbishment of the old building and loved it.

When friends came over we used to use the alcove bit to hang up coats. There wasn't a light there during the day the light from the big windows lit it up but of a night it would get quite dark. After a few weeks I started to feel uneasy being home alone, especially if I was standing in the kitchen part. The end of the island was where the hob and oven was and the alcove started directly opposite the end of the island. So if I was cooking it was behind me to the left. I had my back to it. I mentioned this to a few friends and they said that they always felt scared going to get coats and bags but just thought that was because it was dark. Another thing too, in front of hob was a sort of half wall that went from the island counter top all the way up to the ceiling so say if you were stood in certain parts of living room area you couldn't see the oven or see the alcove part.

One day, DH was sat on the couch and I was cooking. I could see him from where I was standing. I was looking at the pan and then suddenly felt someone grab my left shoulder. I thought it was DH so I turned but no one was there. I turned again and DH was still sat down. There was no way he could have done it. I told him what had happened and he said that had happened to him a few times while he had been stood there.

Our 6 month contract ended and we decided to move as I had a new job. The agents were showing someone around and we were on our way out when we bumped in to them in the corridor. They were showing a friend of a friend around so we had a little chat and they later rented it out.

We bumped in to them a few months later and asked how they were enjoying it there and they said they loved it but asked if we found the kitchen drafty. I said no but always thought the alcove bit was a bit chilly. They looked a bit puzzled and asked me when I meant. I explained where I meant and they said "There's just a wall there. There's always just been a wall there." I asked if it had been put up perhaps after we moved and they said that it wasn't there when they looked around and that they would absolutely remember seeing that.

We went home and looked back through photos and in the six months we'd lived there all the photos we'd taken hadn't included that part. There were photos where the wall by the oven had covered where it had been. Nobody else seemed to have captured this mysterious corner of the apartment apart from one who had taken a photo from the front of the island but half of the photo where it would have been was just black.

I went on this persons Facebook to see photos and there was one of them sat on the island with their keys with the entire back wall of the kitchen behind them- no alcove at all. They moved in the day after we left so there wouldn't have been time to put up a new wall.

DH and I were so confused but then we thought about it more and realised that the entire inside of the building had been removed so why would there be an old brick and stone part?

We looked back at the pictures the estate agent had put on and there weren't any that included that area so couldn't tell if it was there or not.

I honestly don't know what it was or if we all imagined it. There is just no explanation for it at all but I'm just glad that my friends and DH had at least seen it too!

FrenchieFromGrease · 06/06/2021 19:46

Why am I reading this thread? I live alone and frighten easily. 😭

viques · 06/06/2021 19:56

But were the chickens still there in the morning? Would have been a better ending if the chicken shed was open, the door creaking in the breeze and all the chicks vanished without trace, not a feather in sight , except maybe for one who crouched under the nest boxes and who never squawked or laid an egg again.........

Did the property have the word Chapel in it's name? If so please PM me the first letter of the name of the settlement. It sounds familiar.

Do say it is 'L' ? Smile

@paradisaea it was @CharDee who posted it, I just found it on an old thread.
