AIBU to fucking hate my Epsom printer?

Every time a print a couple of sheets of paper I get an alert that a colour has run out. It’s cost me 10x more in ink cartridges than the fucking printer cost in the first place. I just changed the magenta so I could actually print a document (entirely in black and white, selected bw printing but it still wants the magenta), I changed the cartridge now it’s asking me to change the fucking black Angry which I only changed last fucking week AngryAngryAngry. I must have printed 4 sheets of paper max since then Angry. I’ve been trying to override it as I don’t have time to pop to the shops to pick up another cartridge, but I’ve had to give up.

How I long for the days of just being able to whip out the cartridge, give it a shake and put it back in and you could print to your heart’s content until the paper went blank.

Shitty fucking printer!

Mind you, the one in the office is not much better. Once the scanner lamp thingy went and it wouldn’t let you print even if you had no intention of scanning anything.

My HP is no better. Cursed things.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/06/2021 13:39

I had the same with hp. Got a laser one and never looked back!

Blood is apparently cheaper per liter than ink. I would believe it...

Bovrilly · 01/06/2021 13:55

I don't know why it's seemingly so impossible to make a home printer that actually works properly. Every single one I've owned has had issues, you have to bloody beg them to work, switch off, switch back on, no there isn't a paper jam, no you've had quite enough ink for one day, here let me tickle your tummy, oh we're only printing photos today are we? And so on and so on. Pisses me off no end.

CheerfulBunny · 01/06/2021 13:58

I think they deliberately build the shit-ness in to ensure we keep buying the sodding things. Seems like a solid business plan tbh.

WhyIsMyKitchenSoCold · 01/06/2021 13:59

All home printers are dicks. This is a well known fact of life. It’s the biggest con going. Mine has stopped talking to my laptop and will grudgingly copy in black and white only but with a fucking pink stripe down the middle of the page. I hate it with a fiery passion. Of all the lockdown schooling horrors, the “mum, I need to print something” was the one I detested the most.

SinkGirl · 01/06/2021 14:01

I just recently got a HP A3 printer which prints really well but for some reason there’s an issue with windows where the print queue keeps getting stuck on one item. Drives me insane. Seems quite economical with the ink though!

I would get a laser if I didn’t need A3

Feduppluckingmychinhairs · 01/06/2021 14:03

Home printers are bastards

araiwa · 01/06/2021 14:04

Laser printer and off brand replacement toner has done the job for me for many years

Mellonsprite · 01/06/2021 14:06

I went back to HP because of this. The Epsom one was so shit, I nearly punched the bloody thing multiple times. It was ‘offline’ more than it was ‘online’ too.
Just as soon as I resolved one problem it created another one which I had to research how to overcome. It’s like it had been programmed to be wilfully difficult.

Gastropod · 01/06/2021 14:09

Oh I feel your pain, I hate my Epson too. I've had Canon and HP over the years but nothing beats this Epson for sheer expense and rubbish ink use!
I spent much of lockdown last year berating it when it refused to print anything in black and white because there was no yellow ink. And couldn't get any delivered for weeks. Tried generic ink and it refused to print with it so had to fork out for the own brand stuff, which promptly ran out again a couple of months later. I very nearly slung it out onto the pavement for the pigeons to eat. Horrid thing.

cctvrec · 01/06/2021 14:10

Get a chip resetter!!!

I have an Epson and can use non Epson inks and when they "run out" I use the resetter again and get another bloody week out of them at least!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/06/2021 14:11

Honestly, i switched to Brother laser which connects through cable and have not had ANY issues at all since. The HPs before were killing me!
Can't connect
No ink
Printing testing pages
Just striking?
Pretending request wasn't made then printing it 6 times.

🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕to you HP

Rinoachicken · 01/06/2021 14:11

I have a HP with a subscription to instant ink. I pay 1.99 a month and for that the printer monitors my usage and when I’m getting low HP send me new cartridges through the post ready for when I need to change them. So I am never ‘out of ink’.

The subscription charge varies depending on how much printing you do. I think I get 100 pages a month for 1.99, or something like that.

I love it. I never ever can’t print because I run out of ink. I never have to run to the supermarket and pay £20 for one cartridge just to print one page.

I don’t do that much printing so I get sent new cartridges every 6 months or so.

Built in obsolescence however - the way they can just ‘stop supporting’ a device after about 5 years so it no longer gets updates and then starts to no longer work forcing you to buy a new one, even though there’s nothing functionally wrong with your existing one - THAT pisses me off.

MissConductUS · 01/06/2021 14:14

I have an HP multifunction laser color printer. It also scans and faxes. It's never given me a bit of trouble in the five or six years I've had it. The toner cartridges are expensive, but if I have to replace one (almost always the black) it's no more than once a year. Amazon has really good prices on them.

dannydyerismydad · 01/06/2021 15:27

We have a perfectly beautifully behaved printer.

Until DS has to print something for homework. Then it will inevitably break. They are cursed machines.

AIBU to fucking hate my Epsom printer?
Bearnecessity · 01/06/2021 15:36

I had an Epsom brand new must have printed three things none of which was great, cost a fortune in ink as you say Op, it went to charity within four months wretched things.....

wineymummy · 01/06/2021 15:39

Yes my Epsom was a pile of shit! Print head clogged up and a replacement part was over £100...I put it on freecycle and still feel ad for the man who took it and probably never got it worked. I got a Canon last year and so far it's been fine...

DynamoKev · 01/06/2021 15:40

Epson - printers
Epsom - place in South of England

aramox · 01/06/2021 15:40

My theory is that they are too cheap to work (ok mine is - £40). This is the future of homeworking - we use our own cheap equipment instead of office-supplied high end stuff. We have three separate printers in this house and despite two being wifi it is impossible to send things to them and then they die a death if not used often enough.

MsTSwift · 01/06/2021 15:42

I have been reduced to tear by printers. My job requires me to print out important documents often with a hard deadline. I have 3 now as back up. Only one actually works. They are the worst machine in existence.

Howzaboutye · 01/06/2021 15:45

Epsom inkjet are shit.
Brother Lazer b&w works. It just works. It printed over 1000 pages from a toner thing that said 1000 pages. £90 for printer and £35 for toner. And it actually works.

TippledPink · 01/06/2021 15:50

I am trying to buy a printer now, have never had one work for me so no idea what to get!! I really feel your pain, I am too scared that I will make a mistake to purchase!

NewPanDrawer · 01/06/2021 15:50

Inkjet printers are loss-leaders for selling you ink! Buy a laser and you'll save a fortune in the long run AND the sodding thing will actually print stuff (quickly) without 30 minutes of reconfiguration and pleading!

Howzaboutye · 01/06/2021 15:54

Oops thanks DynamoKev

MissConductUS · 01/06/2021 15:58

This is the black and white version of the HP multifunction I have that's been brilliant

HP M148dw LaserJet Pro Multifunctional Printer, White

The colour one is about twice the price.
