AIBU to fucking hate my Epsom printer?

Every time a print a couple of sheets of paper I get an alert that a colour has run out. It’s cost me 10x more in ink cartridges than the fucking printer cost in the first place. I just changed the magenta so I could actually print a document (entirely in black and white, selected bw printing but it still wants the magenta), I changed the cartridge now it’s asking me to change the fucking black Angry which I only changed last fucking week AngryAngryAngry. I must have printed 4 sheets of paper max since then Angry. I’ve been trying to override it as I don’t have time to pop to the shops to pick up another cartridge, but I’ve had to give up.

How I long for the days of just being able to whip out the cartridge, give it a shake and put it back in and you could print to your heart’s content until the paper went blank.

Shitty fucking printer!

Mind you, the one in the office is not much better. Once the scanner lamp thingy went and it wouldn’t let you print even if you had no intention of scanning anything.

God are they still running that scam?

I swore off Epson about 20 years ago because I couldn't print black text because the fucking yellow ink had run out despite me printing almost nothing in colour. They waste a load of ink every time you switch the bastard thing on. I complained to Epson and got a patronising reply about it needing yellow ink to print black text because it was a colour printer.

Since then I've had black laser printers and managed with those. In the rare time I want photo printing, I pay to have it done. There's endless suppliers that will print and post, or walk in services in supermarkets etc that charge less than buying photo paper and ink to do it at home.

Current laser printer is still a bastard though. It includes an algorithm that works on the urgency and lack of time when deciding whether to print what I want it to.

Plus it won't print from the paper tray, only the single sheet feeder. It's like it's making me beg.

[quote cctvrec]Get a chip resetter!!!

I have an Epson and can use non Epson inks and when they "run out" I use the resetter again and get another bloody week out of them at least!

Really? I will definitely be looking into that!

Yes, printer ink is more precious than blood and no, I’ve never had a sodding home printer that worked, including an old HP laser that chose to vomit black splodges everywhere the minute it was out of guarantee. No way of fixing the bugger either, the only reason it’s still here is because it’s holding up my old desk which I can’t be arsed to replace.

Ha yes, in my rage I typed Epsom and not Epson. Ah no, it was sodding autocorrect.

I have actually been to Epsom, and once had lunch in an Epson staff canteen, so I should know the difference. Nice food though, probably paid for in printer ink.

My HP laser is great - but only I have the aura and temperament to operate it. It goes haywire for anyone else. Home printers are generally awful.

Still, I wouldn't dream of trying to print a photograph on mine - it would probably combust.

lillylemons · 01/06/2021 17:18

I used to love my canon printer never had any issues printing would work when I wanted it to with no issues then ds pulled it off the unit and the thing won't turn back on :( we used a cartridge in it that we could refill ourselves.
Now we have a hp printer with ink subscription, never run out of ink but it's very selective about which devices it will print from it drives me crazy.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 01/06/2021 17:19

Defo get a laser printer. I got a Brother one last month and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! It works every time, is so fast and does automatic double-sided printing. It was only £129. Before this I had bastard inkjet ones that were so temperamental, it was unreal.

LubaLuca · 01/06/2021 17:20

I have the hp subscription thing too. A couple of quid a month and I never run out of ink before they send new cartridges. It's probably slightly more expensive in the long run, but absolutely worth it to avoid that panic of no ink and homework requiring A4 sheets of full colour, no gaps, edge-to-edge printing.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 01/06/2021 17:20

This about summed up my relationship with inkjet printers Grin

ladygindiva · 01/06/2021 17:21

You all need to buy a Canon. I went on a Google advice page ranting about my twatty Epson printer and the best advice I got was to chuck it away and buy a Canon. I did just that. Never regretted it. Its really well behaved. I don't work for Canon BTW!

Weeble09 · 01/06/2021 17:22

Printers hate everyone, they've got it in for the entire human race. I dread getting a call at work to fix one, I know it's going to fight me at every step.

Howzaboutye · 01/06/2021 17:25

Printer ink is actually more valuable than gold. Doesn't need to be, it just is. Scam central.

YouSeeMee · 01/06/2021 17:25

Ink cartridges are the work of the devil.

You need one with refillable ink tanks. Got one last year and it has changed my life.

First set of ink pots still in use after 15 months. Haven't even topped up to finish off the pots it came with.

Brother laser B&W printer here. Never had any problems. It photocopies and scans too.

Long ago got rid of our inkjet. Ugh.

Our Canon is a bastard. It is wireless in theory but in practice this means it randomly forgets everything and refuses to believe it can be, despite the settings and all indication lights showing everything is normal and fine. It is utter crap.
Kyph · 01/06/2021 17:36

Printer technology remains in the dark ages. I've had Canon, Epsom and HP they have all been equally crap.

Never believe a printer when it says it's run out of ink. They all lie. Wait until you get a blank sheet of paper.
Mine tried a new trick recently. It says "inpad is full". Essentially that's code for you need to buy a new printer. It lasted another few months though.

MoiraQueen · 01/06/2021 17:37

I love my Epson printer, it's an Ecotank one with refillable tanks. Runs forever on one fill of ink and generally behaves itself whilst printing. We had a 2yr tank refill deal, we've only refilled them once in all that time and we still have bottles of ink waiting to be used. We print a lot, but the relief of not running out of ink at the last minute, and having to fork out a fortune. The ink levels are also really clear as you can see the ink bottles from the front if the printer.
The mistake is to buy cheap printers, they have to make their money somehow, so they make it on ink.

Ohthatsgreat · 01/06/2021 17:42

Would people mind linking the brother laser printers they recommend? I have a HP and I hate it. I can just about get it to print docs from my phone but otherwise I’m in a vicious cycle with it’s menu options. Have tried to update it etc but it won’t.

callmemaybee · 01/06/2021 17:44

It’s cost me 10x more in ink cartridges than the fucking printer cost in the first place.

This is public knowledge though. Everyone knows that Epson ink is expensive. It’s a massive “con/negative” point if you bothered to look at any review before purchasing. If you want cheap, go for HP. This is your fault for not doing your research.

I have a high end Epson printer bought in 2018 and it’s still as good now as it was then. I have changed the cartridges a few times and never had the same issues that you have.

callmemaybee · 01/06/2021 17:45

This is such a boomer thread though

So much personification of printers - just admit you’re bad with tech

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/06/2021 17:46

I see Brother for the win😂

I ahve this one

I didn't need colour printing. Cartriges last ages.

Shameful millenial here. 😂
FOJN · 01/06/2021 17:48

I now have an Epson and hate it with a passion. Yes home printers are all dicks but this is on another level.

Yes I know I'm not using Epson cartridges, I couldn't afford the fucking mortgage for yours.
No I'd rather you didn't update now. I SAID, NOT FUCKING NOW.
No I do not want to call a friend.

I want you to fuck off interrupting my work and do what I fucking asked you to.

Epson your printers are absolute shit and when this pile of crap dies I will never buy another, I make sure to warn everyone else not to buy Epson. Fucking wankers.

Oh that feels better.

ScienceSensibility · 01/06/2021 17:50

I hate all printers, the evil bastards.

simbobs · 01/06/2021 17:52

Our Canon printer was great but developed an irreparable fault. As we had only just restocked ink cartridges I wanted to replace it with another one that used the same type of cartridge. No such luck, and when DH went to buy another one (we run an online business and needed one immediately) the only option in stock at Curry's was HP with ink tank. It worked temperamentally for a month, then packed in! Their customer service was very good, and they told us to return it to the shop for an exchange. So far, so good, but I do feel everyone's pain.
