Using God/Christ in negative threads

Tigertalk · 30/05/2021 09:00

Hi all, I’m a long time mumsnetter but finding it hard to read constant threads (as a Christian) that use phrases starting with ‘ for G*d’s sake ( insert some nasty phrase about something) . We don’t accept racist or phobic language so why is it okay to use God, Jesus, Christ etc in these contexts? It’s really uncomfortable to read constantly 🙁

OP posts:
brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 30/05/2021 10:58

Let’s not forget that Chris Morris classic outburst “Christ’s fat cock”

lightand · 30/05/2021 10:59

I am a Christian.
I get where you are coming from.
But I dont expect non-Christians to behave as if they are a Christian. They cant anyway.

StevieNix · 30/05/2021 11:01

Grin this is hilarious
I find it highly HIGHLY offensive that you’ve compared it with racist/homophobic language.

SharonasCorona · 30/05/2021 11:01

@Orangelizard

I think it's the double standards.

I hate that at work one of my colleagues uses the phrase Jesus F** Christ - if I said the same thing using Allah I'm pretty sure I would get a disciplinary but for some reason it's perfectly acceptable to be crass about Christianity.

I’m Muslim and I have never said JFC or heard any Muslim say JFC! For two reasons:

Islam teaches us to respect other people’s beliefs (the Qu’ran says ‘to you your religion, and to me mine’)

We believe Jesus was a prophet of God and I would NEVER disrespect him.

Macncheeseballs · 30/05/2021 11:02

So you'll not be watching father ted then

Staffy1 · 30/05/2021 11:02

I agree OP. I did report a really offensive post months ago, can't remember what it was, but asked in the report for it to be removed unless it would be considered acceptable directed at other religions, and it was removed. Also reported one on disabilities another time and that didn't get removed, so it's not as if every reported post is removed.

WorraLiberty · 30/05/2021 11:02

@Gladimnotcampinginthisweather

I reported someone for saying 'Christ on a bike' once because I find that really offensive. No response from Mumsnet.
Well, thank God for that.
christdoinghisunspecifiedhobby · 30/05/2021 11:03

@Nightbear

As someone with an Irish Catholic background may I suggest that you never go to Ireland without taking some heavy duty ear protection.
Agreed. Even my staunchly Catholic, professionally offended mother peppers her conversation with "oh my god", "god almighty", random "jesus!" exclamations etc. My mum's priest would use it himself. It's completely ingrained in our vernacular, nobody is offended by it, and it's never going away.
Lockheart · 30/05/2021 11:03

Not sure why you think jesus is only part of christianity.

I think you've missed the glaring self-absorption and arrogance that only they are the true believers which are common traits among the religious.

StormcloakNord · 30/05/2021 11:04

Only on Mumsnet will you find raving Christians comparing "for gods sake" to racist and phobic language Hmm

lightand · 30/05/2021 11:04

@lightand

Jesus's words, they know not what they do, are coming strongly to mind. Lay off them op as it looks like you will be doing in any case.
speakout · 30/05/2021 11:04

But I dont expect non-Christians to behave as if they are a Christian. They cant anyway.

lightand can you explain this?

Thewinterofdiscontent · 30/05/2021 11:05

@wildeverose

I'm a Christian- it's not even close to racist or homophobic language. It's shockingly offensive you've compared the two.
Why isn’t it as bad? Teachers are suspended for blasphemy for some religions. You either uphold everyone’s right to be offended or you don’t.
MyDcAreMarvel · 30/05/2021 11:06

I agree it’s offensive and disrespectful. If someone substituted Allah or prophet Muhammad it would rightly be deleted.

PumpkinPiloter · 30/05/2021 11:08

As an atheist am I allowed to be offended when people communicate with me as if God/Jesus is real even though it makes absolutely no logical sense? When schools are state-funded but still allowed to teach in a way that contradicts science? Or that a daily thought or prayer is literally written into the curriculum?

Religion is a dinosaur in modern society, secularism is on the rise and honestly, people should be more surprised that people still tolerate it as if it was not nonsense.

I think you should pick your battles more carefully.

DavidTheDog · 30/05/2021 11:08

To be fair to those who are offended, it's up there in the top three of the ten commandments. Their belief is that blaspheming is more serious than murder, theft and adultery.

HowManyToes · 30/05/2021 11:08

Also Christian, specifically Catholic. I can’t get myself worked up about this. Comparing it to racist/homophobic language is an absolute false equivalence.
AnAwesomePossum · 30/05/2021 11:09

How do you feel about ‘Jesus in the cabbage van’?

I like that as the more modern version of ‘Christ on a bike’.

KevinTheGoat · 30/05/2021 11:11

I'm Jewish, so your norms do not apply to me, and it's not up there with racist and homophobic language.

Jews and Muslims get far more abuse on here, so not feeling exactly sympathetic to you.

SimonJT · 30/05/2021 11:12

@MyDcAreMarvel

Allah is just the arabic word for god, as you think its right that posts are deleted I have to assume you have been very busy reporting posts with the word god in.
KevinTheGoat · 30/05/2021 11:12

@lightand

Imagine a Muslim or Jewish poster saying something like this.
speakout · 30/05/2021 11:13

Christ on a Cracker is a good one.

Mousetown · 30/05/2021 11:14

@HappyHappyHippocampus

Also,

Can you not see the ABSOLUTE FUCKING HYPOCRISY of a Christian church being upset about blasphemy when they actively persecute and encourage homophobic and racist behaviour.

I mean c’mon!!!!!!!

👏👏👏
LindaEllen · 30/05/2021 11:16

Given that god isn't real, I hardly think it matters.
