Using God/Christ in negative threads

Tigertalk · 30/05/2021 09:00

Hi all, I’m a long time mumsnetter but finding it hard to read constant threads (as a Christian) that use phrases starting with ‘ for G*d’s sake ( insert some nasty phrase about something) . We don’t accept racist or phobic language so why is it okay to use God, Jesus, Christ etc in these contexts? It’s really uncomfortable to read constantly 🙁

This is a UK based site and we have no blasphemy laws. Would you like us all to say 'fuck' more often instead? 'god' is a mild oath for the majority who have no belief. If your faith is so weak that it gets offended at someone else's use of a word, that is your problem.

People deserve respect. Beliefs do not.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 30/05/2021 09:30

Religion is just superstition anyway - would you be offended by someone using the same term about any other fictional character eg‘Mickey F**g Mouse!’

AIMummy · 30/05/2021 09:32

@ThreeKneeRepeater

The worst one is Jesus Christ with the word ‘fucking’ inserted in the middle. Really offensive imo.
Agree with this one (and not even Christian).

@LostInTime

Is a 'blimey' allowed? (God blind me)
I had no idea that was what blimey meant Blush what does God blind me even mean.

I have zero religion but do use the above terms but not blaming anyone as cant blame someone I don't believe in.

OrangePowder · 30/05/2021 09:35

I don't use this kind of language. Not because it offends me, but because I know can offend others.

It also affects my opinion of others who do use it. Either they know it's offensive and they don't care, or they're not bright enough to know it's offensive.

100% this.
Flaunch · 30/05/2021 09:35

Religious people do love policing everyone else’s thought, speech and behaviour.

Findwen · 30/05/2021 09:36

Don't worry OP, I just prayed and God said she didn't mind about the usage.

I'm religious and I promise I don't 😂
EdgeOfACoin · 30/05/2021 09:37

Nobody uses Mohammed, Allah or Buddha as swear words. It would be considered quite offensive to do so.

SinkGirl · 30/05/2021 09:37

You might want to give Line of Duty a miss!
Oh dear. I’ve been selling prints of those phrases - hopefully not to any of OPs friends 😬

I do think we, as individuals, should look at the words we use. I am trying to stop using words that were designed to degenerate women. I don't however support further curtailment to our free speech.

Jozen · 30/05/2021 09:38

How do you cope in the real world OP?
Someone in pain or distressed using your "forbidden" words?
TV shows, movies, documentaries?
Do you sit there with a cat's bum face wincing?

Yes, this is just awful. Makes me die a little inside whenever I read/hear it.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/05/2021 09:39

I don’t like it when people use “witch” as an insult (“She’s a right miserable witch”) because I don’t like seeing my beliefs being used like that or the perpetuation of witch as a negative. But I understand the context, that it’s just part of standard language (as is using God or Jesus) and that - with freedom of speech - I have to accept it. And I do.

If you’re waiting for a situation where you never hear anything you don’t like, you’re going to be waiting a long time. Or would you prefer we had religious blasphemy laws Hmm

Orchidflower1 · 30/05/2021 09:39

@Tigertalk

I don’t believe it is racist- people of a range of race, colours and creeds would despise the blasphemy.

What is also ENORMOUSLY wrong is the mocking of people who are offended by it.

That's just a really silly comment. Whether you believe in a Christian God or not, historians across the globe accept jesus lived and breathed. So not a fictional character. Back to the point of the op. I'm not offended as such but find it really curious that people use that phrase (more jesus than omg). Online there's not much you can do. In person i say something as it makes me wince when i hear it.

Allah (god) is used as a swear word all the time.

I'd happily use them and wouldn't give a toss, but as we're in a supposedly Christian majority country it's hardly surprising that people reference the religious figures that they're most familiar with.

Me neither!

Some religious people.

I’m a sikh, I don’t care about people saying “oh my god” etc, lots of other religious people feel the same.

InTheDrunkTank · 30/05/2021 09:41

Saying for 'god's sake' isn't intended in a derragatory way towards religious people though. People are being irreverent over a topic which to you personally is important. Really these phrases are actually just ingrained within common language now and have no relgious connotation at all. In the same way using the word 'idiot' isn't generally considered to be insulting towards people with a mental disbility.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/05/2021 09:41

These comments aren't directed at living people. It would be comparable to racism if people said 'f-ing Christian ' etc.

Lighttunnelahead · 30/05/2021 09:41

I’m Irish - line of duty language - say no more, that wee donkey line was in everyday use, I had no idea people found it offensive till I moved to england - still use it - I don’t tend to attract the Christian types as friends!🤣
