Is it okay to drink wine with a cold?

My daughter is at her dads this weekend, dropped her at school this morning and that is her till Monday. I have an awful cold, it started Wednesday night, it's not just a cold as I can get on with things then but an AWFUL cold. Blocked/runny nose, sore throat, sore head, sore eyes and achy bones all over. Also exhausted but for some reason can't sleep. No temp though.

I haven't eaten today, just no appetite at all but was thinking tonight I could go a couple glasses bottle of wine tonight and that should help me sleep as-well and relax a bit.

AIBU? I don't want to feel worse tomorrow but would like to think this is the peak of it🤞

You are an adult. If you want to drink wine then drink wine. You don't need permission from strangers on the internet.

Babbly · 28/05/2021 13:37

Regardless of whether you have a cold or not, not eating for a day and having a bottle of wine instead obviously won't make you feel good.

bookworm20 · 28/05/2021 13:37

YANBU Its obviously ok to drink wine with anything and at any time.

Knock yourself out. Well, not literally Grin

Hope you're feeling better soon!

I am surprised you fancy it if you feel so rotten. Wont do any harm but actually alcohol disrupts sleep patterns (google it) so even though you feel it relaxes you and helps you sleep it is not going to give you the proper sleep you need. You would be better off with a hot bath a rub of vicks and a horlicks before an early night and save the wine for another night

Lockheart · 28/05/2021 13:39

Why wouldn't it be ok? Just have the wine if you want it Confused

IsolaPribby · 28/05/2021 13:40

Wine on an empty stomach is not a good idea. You will feel worse.

Anurulz · 28/05/2021 13:41

Mulled wine or mead actually works well on a cold Smile. Have tried mead and it definitely eased my sore throat..

PeskyRooks · 28/05/2021 13:41

The trouble is that the wine will make you more dehydrated when you already need extra fluid because of your cold. I suppose on the plus side it will help you sleep.

Seesawmummadaw · 28/05/2021 13:42

Grin you have permission to get wasted.

hippidyhiphip · 28/05/2021 13:43

You'd be better off with a shot of night nurse. I think it contains some alcohol and it'll knock you out for 10 hours straight.

BiniorellaSun · 28/05/2021 13:43

Was your Covid test negative?
Personally I wouldn’t because alcohol affects your immune system.

amancalledove · 28/05/2021 13:44

@Seesawmummadaw GrinGrin that's all I was after really

The alcohol will kill the germs, that's what I'd tell myself anyway! Wink

Bearsbearsbears40 · 28/05/2021 13:51

Yeah I agree a whole bottle of wine won’t help you feel better tomorrow, but one glass might just help you sleep. Try and have some toast so you don’t drink on an empty stomach, and stick to the one glass, I say. Hope you feel better soon OP.

tiredanddangerous · 28/05/2021 14:06

Alcohol kills germs doesn't it?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 28/05/2021 14:08

No, it's strictly against the law.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 28/05/2021 14:12

Over the years I'm come to the conclusion over the years that the body can be poorly or pissed but not both.If I've got a cold and drink I wake up the next morning and the cold has vanished.

borntobequiet · 28/05/2021 14:14

It’s the only thing to do really. But not a whole bottle.

PattyPan · 28/05/2021 14:15

Are you taking any cold medicine? You shouldn’t drink a lot of alcohol and take paracetamol based medicines

Slippy78 · 28/05/2021 14:49

It's always OK to drink wine.

thepeopleversuswork · 28/05/2021 15:06

Alcohol isn't optimal if you're unwell: it dehydrates you when you need higher than average liquid intake. But you're a grown up: its not prohibited. A glass or two won't do you any harm. But a bottle of wine on a totally empty stomach isn't a clever idea, cold or otherwise.

NewlyGranny · 28/05/2021 15:08

As long as it's medicinal. 😉

XenoBitch · 28/05/2021 15:08

I have drank when I have had a stinker of a cold... put some music on and it perks me up.
Just be careful if you are also taking paracetamol though. Both that and booze together can stress your liver a little.
I hope you feel better soon.

CoffeeCakey · 28/05/2021 15:09

Do what you want. I wouldn't personally.

thefirstmrsrochester · 28/05/2021 15:13

PILs swear by a couple of aspirin and red wine when fighting colds, the proclaim it as a medical fact that it’s an effective cure, and my GP next door neighbour agrees with them. Get it down you OP.
