To not have a coffee table?

Is that odd? Is it a staple of a living room?

My living room isn’t that big in my new home and so I sold my old table. If I bought a new one then it would have to be small and seems a little bit pointless.

We don't have one. Got a lovely rug and loads of space for toddler to run around / lounge around. No shuffling to get past or having to walk round - bliss!

Tanfastic · 24/05/2021 18:18

No, we have side tables but no coffee table, just a big rug and a footstool.

TipseyTorvey · 24/05/2021 18:19

No, we don't have one. Would take up too much space and end up being another dumping ground for me to clear. Side tables and a clear perspex nest of tables to pull out of a corner if we want to put nibbles on or drinks.

IliveonCoffee · 24/05/2021 18:21

No, we don't have one either. Room is too small for it, plus it would block the walkway - our house is hallway > living room > conservatory in one line.

We have a nest of tables, that shuffle around depending on guests.

GirlCrush · 24/05/2021 18:23

Just got rid of ours. Quite like not having one

VeganVeal · 24/05/2021 18:24

We have one in the drawing room but not one in the living room

kowari · 24/05/2021 18:27

We use IKEA wooden stools as both stools and side tables, the basic stackable ones.

AgeLikeWine · 24/05/2021 18:31

YANBU. We don’t own a coffee table, nor do we own any of those stupid pointless books that some people apparently stack on them.

Same
Notavegan · 24/05/2021 18:33

Got rid of ours when kids arrived. Won't have one again. Room so much bigger.

newnortherner111 · 24/05/2021 18:35

It is up to you, your choice.

Grizalda · 24/05/2021 18:37

Had one 15yr ago, pre kids. Got rid because the lounge in our first house was small and the space was better used when dc1 arrived with all their baby clutter in tow.
Then we graduated through several bigger houses and never bought another, like pp I have a nest of tables that just moves around when needed.

00100001 · 24/05/2021 18:37

YANBU. but it's fine to have one as well.

We don't because it just ends up being "storage" for crap.

Curious2021 · 24/05/2021 18:37

Don’t have one and never had one growing up either

PinkiOcelot · 24/05/2021 18:39

We don’t have a coffee table either. Don’t see the need.

AmandaHugenkiss · 24/05/2021 18:40

No coffee table here either. A side table to put a coffee on if sat on the sofa, and that’s it.

Patapouf · 24/05/2021 18:40

We don't have one, living room is dominated by sofa and we needed some space for toddler to toddle.

trevthecat · 24/05/2021 18:43

We have one but it's usually pushed out of the way! I like having one and can't wait for the youngest to not need so much stuff on the front room 😂 we also have side tables at the end of the sofas for drinks etc that do get used

DonttouchthatLarry · 24/05/2021 18:46

We have a small table next to each sofa for lamps and drinks but got rid of our coffee table about 20 years ago as 2 big dogs made it dangerous to put anything on it anyway!

devilboughtmysoul · 24/05/2021 19:00

So I have an inbuilt cupboard on one side that can be used for drinks and I could get a side table for the other sofa.

Maybe I’ll get a footstool and then get a board you can lay across it and remove.

I don't have one for exactly the same reason, there's just not enough room for one.

Astraturf · 24/05/2021 19:05

We have things that can go on the sofa arms. It's a wide flat bit in the middle and three narrow bits either side so they hang over it.

ScreamingMeMe · 24/05/2021 19:05

Same here. I can't be doing with walking around a coffee table all the time.
IEat · 24/05/2021 19:06

I have W little bookcase input my drink on but I have cats and they’d both climb on the coffee table

Progress2019 · 24/05/2021 19:06

We have one because I work from the sitting room and use it as my desk. If I didn’t, I wouldn't. Side tables are enough and i’d definitely like a nest to use as necessary. The sitting room would seem huge without it. I’d love it.
