To not have a coffee table?

devilboughtmysoul · 24/05/2021 18:16

Is that odd? Is it a staple of a living room?

My living room isn’t that big in my new home and so I sold my old table. If I bought a new one then it would have to be small and seems a little bit pointless.

Moved mine to the conservatory where I plan to sit drinking coffee all summer if the fucking weather ever improves

pigsDOfly · 24/05/2021 19:10

Another one without a coffee table.

The two side tables either end of the sofa are in exactly the right place for drinks, right beside my elbow. A coffee table always seems to get in the way without being exactly were I want it.

@VeganVeal

We have one in the drawing room but not one in the living room
This made me laugh Grin

I’ve not had a coffee table for years. Now DC3 is a bit older I’m considering one though, and a rug again!

Me too. Just on the basis that it’s so relatable. I have a coffee table in the parlour of course (sorry to drip feed) where one would take their morning coffees. But alas I was worried not having one in ones living room would make me a peasant.

We don't have one!

KingdomScrolls · 24/05/2021 19:38

We have one in the living room, but the room is big enough for it, it's a really old chest that was an absolute bargain on gumtree and holds all of DH's crap important hobby stuff. When we lived in a flat we had a small side table at either end of the sofa/between sofa and armchair but a coffee table would've felt cramped. I think as long as you have somewhere to put drinks it's fine

Don’t you take your morning coffee in the actual morning room like normal civilised people OP?
Dishwashersaurous · 24/05/2021 19:40

Side tables

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 24/05/2021 19:41

Why do you think a coffe table is compulsory?

Have have ever furniture you choose in your own home, strange thing to ask strangers about Smile

backtowasteanotherhour · 24/05/2021 19:48

We have a coffee table, but neither of us drinks coffee. Grin

If we didn't have enough room, I wouldn't have one, but I'm so used to our current furniture arrangement, it feels "right" to have one there. However, it was pushed against a wall for a while to make room for our puppy's little playpen, and we didn't really miss it, thanks to a couple of side tables.

girlmama32 · 24/05/2021 19:53

We got one then got rid. It's just something else to clean/clutter up so I much prefer not having one. We have side tables instead

LondonJax · 24/05/2021 19:56

Never had a coffee table in the 40 years I've owned my own home(s). We do have side tables but nothing stuck in the middle of the room - you always have to stretch for your drinks or whatever no matter where you're sitting and I can't be arsed to move that far!

CandidaAlbicans2 · 24/05/2021 20:00

In previous homes I've not had coffee tables because I always felt they would get in the way and the dogs would knock stuff off them. But where I am now, since I no longer have dogs, I decided to get something. But it's not a coffee table it's a wooden trunk, so I can put drinks on it, put my feet up on it, and store stuff in it. It works pretty well even though the room isn't big. I was going to go for side tables but there isn't the room for those, plus I wanted a footstool and more storage. The trunk is a good compromise.

Elsielouise13 · 24/05/2021 20:04

My parents have one. We are not allowed to put coffee cups on it, or indeed anything as is antique...

We don’t have one, side tables all the way

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/05/2021 20:05

No coffee table, just side tables.

Freecuthbert · 24/05/2021 20:09

Absolutely not odd at all. We don't have a coffee table in our living room. I have a pouffe or whatever it's called with a little tray on it for remotes. I also recently got two very small side tables, one next to each sofa. A coffee table would take up too much room in our small living room. I do however have a coffee table in our kitchen, which is perhaps even more odd! Grin

flippertygibbit · 24/05/2021 20:09

I have a teeny tiny table next to my seat on the couch and at DP's chair. Proper coffee tables just end up gathering rubbish in my house!

Ellpellwood · 24/05/2021 20:13

We have one of these that lives under the sofa and comes out when needed. But it's "needed" for wine when DS age 2.5 goes to bed. Grin

I don't have one, our lounge is a small walk through room and a coffee table wouldn't work. I really miss one and when we revamp the downstairs I'm looking forward to getting tables. It'll be so nice not to have put our cups on the floor.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 24/05/2021 20:20

Got 2 little side tables basically ones mine and ones the kids. Then we have comfy pouffes for our feet in the direction the old coffee table was.

Mydogmylife · 24/05/2021 20:26

No coffee table, just nest of tables that can be pulled out as required. Much better for us, although the room is a decentish size we have a dog and if makes it much safer for him mooching about

Because I grew up in with one in the home, had one in my uni house, had one in my first home. It just seemed like a staple. So you know I opened it up to discussion .... on a forum which I assumed was allowed.

But then you always get one that has to be snide.

i have a shelf thing on legs, probably 5 inches wide... at the back of the sofa...one shelf at the height of the back of the sofa and the top about 8 inches above that, anglepoise lamp screwed to the side, and all dh's clutter at one side

it works really well! And saves us kneecapping ourselves on the coffee table or having to dive to catch cups every time the dog wags his tail.

BrieAndChilli · 24/05/2021 20:39

We have a coffee table but don’t have side tables or a nest of tables or any of the other things people on this thread have instead!

Our sofa is a big corner one so if we had side table then only the people at the ends would have somewhere to put drinks, the coffee table is reachable by everyone, it’s not in the way if you are walking through the room and it has drawers for random crap like less used remote controls for the DVD player and sound bar etc, pens, tissues, etc.

MIL doesn’t have a coffee table so you end up putting your mug on the floor and invariable the dog knocks it over etc!
