to think I cannot be the only person who sees a new phone/laptop/tablet as a major fucking annoyance?

Boyfriend laughing his ARSE off at me being pissed off that I have to set up my new laptop. He reminded me that I was the same with my new phone. He said that to "most" people a new phone, say, is a nice exciting thing to have but I was just massively pissed off that I had reinstall apps, reload info, sort out passwords/fingers prints etc.

He is convinced that no one else is like but I disagree! New laptop is marginally better as thanks to firefox sign in all my passwords and history are there but ffs......its still annoying! Its the reason I will only upgrade when I absolutely have to, no early upgrades on my phone for me thank you!

AINBU am I?!

Nope. I love tech but this drives me mad too. I'm forever breaking my phone (on my fifth in 2 years) and even when you've got it all set up, stupid things like the space bar being a different size so you mistype or autocorrect giving you the wrong options drive me MAD.

ImAnOddish · 18/05/2021 01:07

Nope. Gives me the absolute rage Angry

DramaAlpaca · 18/05/2021 01:07

No, you're not. It's a hassle and one I'll only do when I absolutely have to.

AmberIsACertainty · 18/05/2021 01:09

YANBU technology is a necessary evil. It's not remotely exciting. Phone setup is 99% finding what's harvesting what information and switching it all off!

Same here.

It's not exciting, it's a huge faff.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/05/2021 01:09

I am currently breaking my own typo personal best as the keys on this laptop are a nanometre smaller than on my old one! Oh the RAGE I am getting because of that!!!

I just want my new phone to switch on and do everything my old phone did. Is that really so much to ask?!

Oh shit.

I've turned into my mother havent I?

I absolutely love setting up new tech, it gives you a chance to get rid of all the unneeded cruft you've gained over the years just like a good spring-clean.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/05/2021 01:12

She said, in The Before Times, "I just dont see why people need the internet". Of course since the Apocolypse she has embraced it as it kept her church community in touch. I think I have regressed to 70's me. We have switched places :o

Just changing my email address has taken whole days of my life over the past few weeks. And last time I got a new phone, I managed to have three different versions of most of my contacts.

Oh fuck yes.

and dont get me STARTED on the whole "cloud" shite. So everything is saved, great. Can I access it on my new laptop. NO! Because I mixed up my emails when I registered the new laptop and changing it will take 28 fucking days......

YANBU

It’s an utter PITA. I avoid upgrading my phone for this very reason. My husband is the opposite and doesn’t understand me.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/05/2021 01:28

Same here.

I recently changed jobs so had to pack up my old laptop and second screen then unpack and arrange my new one. Which I got DH to do as he loves tech.

THEN all the palaver of logging into a new laptop with new username, password, setting the damn thing up etc. And you can't fucking change the wallpaper on it! Company wallpaper only!

Susannahmoody · 18/05/2021 01:29

On my new work laptop you can't access Gmail due to security, but can access YouTube. Go figure, as they say

klfahah · 18/05/2021 01:30

Agree I hate adjusting to a new device especially a phone. Can transfer apps etc using smart switch etc but many things still need setting up manually. Buttons etc are often in a different place on each device. I always hate a new phone for months until I get used to it, my current phone is on its last legs but I'm reluctant to upgrade. The newer Samsungs also feel like a massive downgrade as they are not as good as the older devices and are lacking loads of features the older S series phones had in my opinion, such as no sd card support and made from plastic for example. They no longer feel like a premium high end device.

Resign

Its the only possible solution. Facists!

My new phone is Samsung and I agree. I have always had Samsungs and my new one feels less "premium" than the Note 2 I had. God I miss that phone......Why did you leave me? WHY?!!!!!

I agree with you OP, I don't replace tech until it's dead, my phone is 4 years old and my kids look at it with pity but I'm super proud I've managed to keep it so long.

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 18/05/2021 01:39

One of the joys that paying over the odds for Apple stuff gets you is "new thing? Log in, choose to restore or transfer, wait a while, it's the same as the old thing (but faster/bigger/smaller/better camera/etc)".

Pinkpaisley · 18/05/2021 01:49

I agree it used to be a pain, but my new phone took literally minutes of my time and only about half an hour of letting it sit and process.

My new computer just needed to be connected to be authorized on my home WiFi and then I signed into my Google and office accounts and pretty much everything was there. There is one piece of esoteric software I use that I had to install. That took a whopping 5 minutes.

melj1213 · 18/05/2021 03:52

What is taking so long to set up?

I do not get on with Apple iOS so have always been an Andriod user, my last 4 phones have all been Samsungs. When I upgrade it has always just been a case of switching out my SIM and SD cards, activating Smart Switch and then having to wait half an hour while it moves all the games and shopping apps important stuff to the new phone. Once that has done I just sign into my Google account and I'm good to go. The longest part is waiting for the files to transfer but once they do its pretty much the same phone I upgraded from, I even installs the old wallpapers and lock screens.

The only time it takes longer is if there are new features that need setting up above and beyond the previous phone - eg this phone has fingerprint ID, which my previous phone did not, so I had to take a few seconds to set that up and I like to manually check all my security settings are still the same but that takes seconds.
