to think I cannot be the only person who sees a new phone/laptop/tablet as a major fucking annoyance?

Boyfriend laughing his ARSE off at me being pissed off that I have to set up my new laptop. He reminded me that I was the same with my new phone. He said that to "most" people a new phone, say, is a nice exciting thing to have but I was just massively pissed off that I had reinstall apps, reload info, sort out passwords/fingers prints etc.

He is convinced that no one else is like but I disagree! New laptop is marginally better as thanks to firefox sign in all my passwords and history are there but ffs......its still annoying! Its the reason I will only upgrade when I absolutely have to, no early upgrades on my phone for me thank you!

AINBU am I?!

Just switched from Android to an iPhone. Gave me the rage for at least a week.

midnightstar66 · 18/05/2021 06:37

My new phone is Samsung and I agree. I have always had Samsungs and my new one feels less "premium" than the Note 2 I had. God I miss that phone......Why did you leave me? WHY?!!!!!

This is your problem. If you have iPhones you just put them beside each other and press a button and they sort the whole lot out themselves

eurochick · 18/05/2021 06:47

"I just want my new phone to switch on and do everything my old phone did. Is that really so much to ask?!"

This is why Apple has become so successful. It just works. Most people don't want the faff.

newnortherner111 · 18/05/2021 06:58

Virtual/digital devices, analogue service. In too many cases. I know several people who resort to small notebooks etc for passwords or password hints, which should not be necessary.

As for upgrades and support, I think the greatest restrictive practice in technology is obsolescence. Everything including operating systems should be supported for at least ten years.

megletthesecond · 18/05/2021 07:03

Yanbu.
I had a new phone in a box for 3 weeks before I could bare to touch it.

Although as my old phone wasn't quite dead I was able to use Samsung smart switch and it just pulled everything over via Bluetooth. Took about an hour and wasn't as awful as I expected.

nancywhitehead · 18/05/2021 07:04

I'm with you! I don't usually find it very exciting to get a new phone/ laptop etc.

They all basically do the same thing these days and if I get a new one it's usually just because the old one has slowed down a lot or broken. Then I have to go through the whole rigmarole of setting up a new one just for it to do the same thing the old one was doing! There's nothing particularly exciting about it because they're all the same... current iPhone is really not much different from the iPhones of 7-8 years ago.

I'd rather not have the hassle tbh!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 18/05/2021 07:13

I'm sorry, I don't understand.
When I got my new laptop I logged into windows as per usual and it set itself up. Everything I'd had before including the wallpaper. All I needed to remember was my email password.
Same with my phone, logged in with my Google ID and there it all was. I go through a lot of phones because I'm a clumsy oaf and this one is armour plated so hopefully will last more than a year!

Sorry.
Cars, on the other hand, boy do I hate getting used to a new one.

Jesusmaryjosephandthecamel · 18/05/2021 07:17

I hate technology and I hate any new devices. My husband sets everything up for me. I just don’t have the inclination or the patience.

WildfirePonie · 18/05/2021 07:30

I hate it too OP, I used to love getting a new dumb phone though.

lidoshuffle · 18/05/2021 08:26

Getting a new laptop/phone/telly is a pain. You spend a grand and you just have the same old crap on it. It's not like buying new clothes/a sofa etc when you get a nice change.

sar302 · 18/05/2021 08:28

Nope same here. DH and I got new phones at the same time, and he immediately cracked on with his and mine stayed in the box until I could be arsed. He thinks I'm weird too. But he's a tech geek

This! Most phones will set themselves up when you log in, same laptops and tablets. It's really not an inconvenience unless you go out of your way to make it one.

Cars on the other hand.... I'll stick with mine until it falls apart under me before changing it!

AliceAbsolum · 18/05/2021 08:33

I hate new things. I have to set it up, look after it, clean it, not lose it, replace it. Nightmare. I try not to have stuff as it's just a fucking burden. Tried to live without a smartphone but that was even more annoying. So I now have 2nd hand ones.

PuppyMonkey · 18/05/2021 08:38

My office is gradually upgrading everyone’s computer and I’m dreading my turn. Every single person who has upgraded so far has had massive annoying headaches with things that worked perfectly fine before now not working. Or handy stuff on programs has now been discontinued because the people in charge of these things think “sod it, let’s make using this slightly more difficult now because that’s progress in’t it?”

JaceLancs · 18/05/2021 08:43

Lap top and work pc I just get work IT firm to sort
Tablets and phones I stick to apple partly because you sit them near each other and they sort it out themselves!
I’m a bit of a technophobe so anything else is down to DS - I struggle with even the TV
Thinking of buying a new TV does anyone have recommendations for smart tv that is easy to use?

MuddySocks · 18/05/2021 08:52

Pisses me off as well

LaurieFairyCake · 18/05/2021 08:53

It's a massive inconvenience when I upgrade my IPhone Confused

You have to log in and download everything from your previous phone to the new one - took 6 hours last time with BOTH phones out of action while it's happening

Wouldn't toggle easily either, took 5 goes to establish a link

BashfulClam · 18/05/2021 08:56

I was crying with frustration last time. As we are wfh we have an app to generate a passcode and it wouldn’t work due to using a new device. The other way is to allow it to call you and I press 1. I couldn’t work out how to get the keypad back when making a call to press fucking 1. In the end I burst into tears as I was so stressed trying to actually log into my computer. My husband came through and brought the keypad up and pressed 1 easily so then I just felt like a massive Fanny.

BashfulClam · 18/05/2021 08:57

@LaurieFairyCake you can now place them side by side and the info just transfers over..still have to download iOS which is a pain in the arse.

ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere · 18/05/2021 09:04

This is why Apple have got me hooked for life. When I got my new one home my old phone spontaneously said “oh, is that a new phone? Do you want me to send all your old data over to it? Just wave it in my general direction and I’ll sort it out for you.” Actual fucking witchcraft.

phoenixrosehere · 18/05/2021 09:10

This. I have an IPhone and a Samsung tablet. If you’re linked with some kind of storage it mostly sorts itself when you log in to your accounts.

This sums it up.
AlmostSummer21 · 18/05/2021 09:32

@RantyAnty

It's been a love hate. When I'm annoyed about setting things up now, I just think back to when software came on a dozen floppy discs.
Yes, I'm old enough to remember that too!!

However, maybe because it's the tech I grew up with, it still feels 'safer' like the data is 'there' it's not flying around in the ether, possibly lost forever if I do something wrong.

AlmostSummer21 · 18/05/2021 09:34

@Fiercestcalm

I love tech, but totally agree. DH’s phone died last week of old age, took me a while to set it up for him ( DH is now disabled/ unable to do it for himself), a day later my computer died ( the one that runs media around the house ) so have had to set up the main household machine ( we have four others dotted about but my machine is the big boss). Also have a new NAS on order to replace our aging one, god knows how long it will take to transfer 16 TB of data to the new one... so time consuming.
I think I need to borrow you for half a day. I have no idea what a NAS even is?!?!
PiccalilliChilli · 18/05/2021 09:41

I hate change.

The new tech is telling me I need all these whizzy new features that, for all of my 40-something years, have managed without perfectly well. I don't like being told my some nerd in Silicon Valley how to improve my life. Fuck off.
