to think I cannot be the only person who sees a new phone/laptop/tablet as a major fucking annoyance?

Boyfriend laughing his ARSE off at me being pissed off that I have to set up my new laptop. He reminded me that I was the same with my new phone. He said that to "most" people a new phone, say, is a nice exciting thing to have but I was just massively pissed off that I had reinstall apps, reload info, sort out passwords/fingers prints etc.

He is convinced that no one else is like but I disagree! New laptop is marginally better as thanks to firefox sign in all my passwords and history are there but ffs......its still annoying! Its the reason I will only upgrade when I absolutely have to, no early upgrades on my phone for me thank you!

AINBU am I?!

Why is it taking so long? I got an S21 Ultra from Samsung a few weeks ago and all I had to do was tap on smart switch, put in my fingerprint, and key in my password for verification. Everything was set up and transferred with almost no input from me in less than 10 mins! I don't get the build quality issues either. The model I got feels just as premium as my iPhone 12 Pro since both have glass on the front and back.

ComingToGetUBarbara · 18/05/2021 09:44

I don't even do the updates on my phone for the inconvenience it causes me with certain apps, so a whole new phone/laptop is just annoying tbh.

AlmostSummer21 · 18/05/2021 09:45

@midnightstar66

My new phone is Samsung and I agree. I have always had Samsungs and my new one feels less "premium" than the Note 2 I had. God I miss that phone......Why did you leave me? WHY?!!!!!

This is your problem. If you have iPhones you just put them beside each other and press a button and they sort the whole lot out themselves

All the iPhones posters are giving me some hope it won't be too much of a disaster.

I'm particularly worried about losing photos. I'm not sure how to get all of them (from
WhatsApp before I sorted the settings to automatically do it, text/messages/emails etc into a ' safe place' that will transfer to the new phone, or if I even need to. Maybe I just need to hope they move via their original message??

I have a love/hate relationship with
Tech.

One of the joys that paying over the odds for Apple stuff gets you is "new thing? Log in, choose to restore or transfer, wait a while, it's the same as the old thing (but faster/bigger/smaller/better camera/etc)".
Exactly this. Also everything connects with ease such as phone and iPad. Suits an old woman like me.
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/05/2021 09:49

From experience it’s mostly blokes who enjoy this sort of thing, since a lot of them seem to have an innate love of gadgets, ditto fiddling with them.

NotImpossible · 18/05/2021 09:49

I hate having to remove/ deactivate half the crap that comes with a new device. But my PC is getting really creaky and I'm quite looking forward to getting a new one - fresh start and all that! There's many years worth of crap on mine which needs to be sorted out.

Aposterhasnoname · 18/05/2021 09:50

This is why you need apple. Take the new phone out of the box, switch it on, put it next to your old phone, click one button and 20 minutes later it does indeed do everything your old phone did, only better.

The new Samsungs do the same too. Put the phone next to the old one, tick whatever you want to transfer and leave what you don't want to transfer (I usually untick messages as most of mine consist of junk I don't care about), key in your google password and leave it to work itself out.
LannieDuck · 18/05/2021 10:04

I agree with you SO MUCH.

@ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere

This is why Apple have got me hooked for life. When I got my new one home my old phone spontaneously said “oh, is that a new phone? Do you want me to send all your old data over to it? Just wave it in my general direction and I’ll sort it out for you.” Actual fucking witchcraft.
Oh god thanks for the warning. I get very emotionally attached to inanimate objects. I'll be very upset & cry if my phone says that. Objectively I know that's daft, but I can't help it. I'd be so upset that my phone felt I'd replaced it & didn't care about it anymore.

I know where this attachment to things comes from, but it doesn't make it any easier to deal with.

It's the main reason I don't change technology/cats until I absolutely have to.

I'd rather pay Apple yhr same money to upgrade my phones ability to keep updating & working than buy a new one

AlCalavicci · 18/05/2021 10:50

My phone is at least 5 years old , my laptop is 7 years old

Work told me they will be getting new laptops and phones for us all in late summer . I have told them not to bother getting me any new stuff as the 3 year old tec still works fine .

If they insist on send in it I'm going to hide when the postman comes Grin

CorianderBee · 18/05/2021 12:53

I love new stuff but also hate setting it up. It's just an annoying task.

klfahah · 18/05/2021 15:44

yes can do smart switch on a Samsung which transfers all your data to new phone in the same way as Apple phones do. but as for them feeling less premium I feel they've took a lot of great features away such as sd card support and the headphone jack. also on my old Samsung s7 you had the dual view feature which was the ability to record video or take photos with both rear & front cameras at the same time it was a great feature but was taken away on the samsung s9 onwards. that's why I feel the newer devices feel like a downgrade.

msbevvy · 18/05/2021 16:13

I soldiered on for 6 months using a phone with a hole in the screen (covered by sellotape) before I could face changing over to the new phone that I had bought.

thenightsky · 18/05/2021 16:24

YANBU. Major faff I can do without.

RozHuntleysStump · 18/05/2021 16:32

Not really. I just log in and it brings everything from my old phone, iPad, MacBook.

Bourbonic · 18/05/2021 17:52

I find it a pain in the arse too. I'm not remotely interested in gadgets and certainly don't feel like I have to have the latest models so when I have to get a new phone, tablet, laptop etc its just a huge inconvenience.
