Mushrooms

So, I’m reading a book at the moment - it’s a thriller, so far so ordinary ... halfway through and have suspicions on ‘whodunnit’ - however the thing that I can’t stop thinking about is this; in the book, the protagonist mentions cooking an omelette and says ‘I start peeling the mushrooms’! WTF? Is that a thing? Are you supposed to peel mushrooms? Does anyone actually do this? Or having I been missing something completely? Maybe it’s the year of relative isolation that’s making me obsess about stupid things - but I can’t get my head around peeling mushrooms as being a thing - if you do it, what exactly are you peeling off??

I have never heard of peeling mushrooms before this thread.

Tal45 · 14/05/2021 10:37

I don't peel them but have for my mum - I think it's an old fashioned thing.

Chloemol · 14/05/2021 11:30

I peel mushrooms

Roseyleaf · 14/05/2021 12:23

My mum peeled mushrooms, I think it used to be standard advice in women's magazines, along with peeling cucumber "to make it more digestible".

I do cut off the bottom of mushroom stalks, they're almost always grotty.

@DappledThings

DH used to peel them only when I was pregnant because he was worried about soil and risk of listeria.

Outside of pregnancy neither of even wash any veg, certainly don't peel mushrooms.

🤮

I peel flat/field mushrooms but not closed cup mushroom. Magic ones i just eat whole

LadyEuphemia · 14/05/2021 13:40

My Countryside raised DH washes and peels them, me City raised just takes them out of the packet, chops and shoves into food. I think they are grown in sterile soil, he doesn’t trust farmers.

But I’ve been doing my way for 41 years and not dead yet, but he’s probably right.

Peeling mushrooms is a bit like peeling grapes, isn't it? As in it's possible, but why would you want to.

TheNestedIf · 14/05/2021 21:53

People who peel things when it isn't strictly necessary (eg: citrus, banana) are one of my irrational annoyances, even though their preference is absolutely none of my business whatsoever. I involuntarily hear a voice in my head sniffily saying "People Who Peel Things" in a disapproving tone.

Sorry, to anyone who peels things. That's me being weird (again).

Anyway, needless to say, I don't peel mushrooms. I don't even peel celeriac.
@BessMarvin (superb name BTW, I'm currently rereading the Clue in the Crumbling Wall for the millionth time) totally agree, they just don't look like something that should be peeled to me. Quick wash and a rub with a piece of kitchen towel and away we go.
@Pumpkyumpkyumpkin thanks I think you're the first person to say they get my name! I'm jealous, I wish I had time to read anything at the moment. They're all stashed in the loft.
Have you played the computer games?

Icopiedyourusername · 15/05/2021 18:07

I peel mushrooms - although only with my fingers, not a knife. I just followed suit from my mum and only recently found out it wasn't the norm!! Blush

burblish · 15/05/2021 18:13

I always peel your bog-standard white mushrooms. Button mushrooms only if they’re looking dirty. Skin-on for chestnut mushrooms and other varieties - I just give them a good wipe with kitchen paper and only peel if they look a bit manky. I find peeling mushrooms oddly satisfying!

Looubylou · 15/05/2021 18:59

I think my mam peeled. I wash - though I know I shouldn't because they are like sponges.

AdjustableAssholeSettings · 15/05/2021 19:03

I peel old mushrooms.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 15/05/2021 19:05

My gran used to peel mushrooms, remove the stalks and then boil them to buggery. What a waste!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/05/2021 19:15

My DM did, but that was ages ago and she was always hyper-finicky.
I never have and never will. I hardly ever even wash them.

fishonabicycle · 15/05/2021 19:25

Nope.buve heard of it but don't do it. Waste of time and mushroom!

Chuzzle · 15/05/2021 20:08

I love this thread.

I peel mushrooms. It's like taking the film off the front of a new phone. It's wonderful.

goose1964 · 15/05/2021 20:15

TBH if they're farmed I just remove the worst of the compost and use them, I usually eat them raw or make mushrooms a la greque. I don't really like fried mushrooms.

campion · 15/05/2021 20:19

What a waste of time and mushrooms.

"Life's too short to peel a mushroom" someone almost said.
