Mushrooms

So, I’m reading a book at the moment - it’s a thriller, so far so ordinary ... halfway through and have suspicions on ‘whodunnit’ - however the thing that I can’t stop thinking about is this; in the book, the protagonist mentions cooking an omelette and says ‘I start peeling the mushrooms’! WTF? Is that a thing? Are you supposed to peel mushrooms? Does anyone actually do this? Or having I been missing something completely? Maybe it’s the year of relative isolation that’s making me obsess about stupid things - but I can’t get my head around peeling mushrooms as being a thing - if you do it, what exactly are you peeling off??

Can't be arsed to peel mushrooms. Wash, dry, use, done.

wellerhugs5 · 13/05/2021 22:06

@malificent7

I peel ones with an obvious skin. It's strangely therapeutic!
I completely agree!! You can really get into a good rhythm of peeling hahaha
HamAndCheeseToastie5032 · 13/05/2021 22:06

I don't peel mushrooms. Maybe I would if I actually ate them, but I don't. So as I cook them mainly for other people, I struggle to give a fuck.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 13/05/2021 22:09

Fresh don’t bother.

Tired get peeled.

MeanderingGently · 13/05/2021 22:11

I always peel mushrooms. You can't wash them because they go all slimy so you peel them to clean them instead. Most mushrooms are covered in bits of the compost they've been grown in and they are often (although not always) hand-picked and I don't want the handled skin in my food. So I peel them and they're clean....

reluctantbrit · 13/05/2021 22:20

I hate mushrooms, DD only eats them raw and DH likes them cooked.

So if I cook I do wash and dry them to remove the dirt unless they look so clean that just wiping them with a dry kitchen towel is enough.

I think peeling would remove too much of the actual mushroom so what's the point. Similar to new carrots or baby potatoes just pulled out of the soil, wash and scrub them, job done.

I peel large old field mushrooms, especially if they are a bit past their best, but I don't peel things like Paris mushrooms, they just get a wipe if they need it. Some types, eg oyster mushrooms, are impossible to peel.

I peel mushrooms. My DM did it, so I do too. I even have a tiny little knife which is only used for peeling mushrooms Grin

TaraR2020 · 13/05/2021 22:25

Mushrooms are the Devil's food and I won't touch them. I've seen them prepared through peeling though Grin

HappyRaven · 13/05/2021 22:26

I always peel mushrooms, but I have never used a knife.

GrumpyHoonMain · 13/05/2021 22:26

My gran used to peel mushrooms only when eaten raw - otherwise the dirt was flicked off, they were chopped and cooked.

Shirley Conrad said "Life's too short to peel a mushroom" There's no need to these days.

nocoolnamesleft · 13/05/2021 22:28

Mushrooms are evil. At least if you peel them, there's less mushroom left to have to eat. Or, better, bin.

BessMarvin · 13/05/2021 22:28

I didn't know you could eat them raw. Having learned this, I still don't think I will!

Pumpkyumpkyumpkin · 13/05/2021 22:32

I did not know you can peel mushrooms. I like mushrooms and I cook with them a lot. Just asked DH, he looked at me like I was daft and said 'of course you peel them I usually do'

I'm nearly 50. I've been married to a secret mushroom peeler for 10 years. Every day's a school day!

I think it was ‘stuff a mushroom’. Peeling is quick, I always do it, having learned from my mum and Nan. Washing them sounds awful - surely they go soggy?

Most UK / European mushrooms taste a lot better raw.

That popped into my head too, but I believe it was too short to stuff a mushroom, which is absolutely true.
ozymandiusking · 13/05/2021 22:36

Ah Yes come to think about it you're quite right, thank you.

I don't understand "of course". It's hardly obvious. There's no obvious skin. It's not like an orange. And even things with an obvious skin you don't necessarily peel, like a courgette
AnnaSW1 · 13/05/2021 22:39

People used to do it. I just wipe mine with kitchen towel

SummerSazz · 13/05/2021 22:39

I think he's poisoned the victim with a mushroom omelette....

No peeling here unless waaaaay beyond their best. The guinea pigs will happily eat the manky skins though so not wasted

Serin · 13/05/2021 22:42

Think it was Shirley Conran, not Conrad, who said that?

AdaColeman · 13/05/2021 22:45

Slice raw Paris (button) mushrooms into a dressing of plain yoghurt crushed garlic & black pepper, scatter with chopped chives or paprika. Or they are also nice with a vinaigrette dressing.
