Mushrooms

So, I’m reading a book at the moment - it’s a thriller, so far so ordinary ... halfway through and have suspicions on ‘whodunnit’ - however the thing that I can’t stop thinking about is this; in the book, the protagonist mentions cooking an omelette and says ‘I start peeling the mushrooms’! WTF? Is that a thing? Are you supposed to peel mushrooms? Does anyone actually do this? Or having I been missing something completely? Maybe it’s the year of relative isolation that’s making me obsess about stupid things - but I can’t get my head around peeling mushrooms as being a thing - if you do it, what exactly are you peeling off??

@BessMarvin (superb name BTW, I'm currently rereading the Clue in the Crumbling Wall for the millionth time) totally agree, they just don't look like something that should be peeled to me. Quick wash and a rub with a piece of kitchen towel and away we go.

Onairjunkie · 13/05/2021 22:55

Mushrooms should be brushed softly if they’re muddy, but not washed or peeled. There’s a lot of flavour in that there skin.

Pumpkyumpkyumpkin · 13/05/2021 22:56

@Onairjunkie now I'm picturing a mushroom singing "brushing me softly....." in a Lauren Hill kind of way

That’s my new mushroom brushing ear worm. Thank you. 🍄

Incidentally my grandmother used to sit and eat big raw mushrooms like apples. It’s just struck me how strange that is.

SkiingIsHeaven · 13/05/2021 23:04

I don't peel them but I do use it mushroom brush.

Oneearringlost · 13/05/2021 23:07

Is it The Therapist OP? I finished it today, and the omelette and peeling mushrooms jumped out at me too! If not, big coincidence, or maybe same author, different book, author must like peeling mushrooms. My Dm taught me to go this in the 70s but would never dream of doing it now.

PattyPan · 13/05/2021 23:08

I’ve been vegetarian since the age of 18 so eaten my fair share of mushrooms and I’ve never peeled any of them - I do always wash them though.

Oneearringlost · 13/05/2021 23:10

Oh, sorry, just gone back to RTFT and seen it is The therapist

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 13/05/2021 23:17

I peel mushrooms. Always have, they taste better in a sandwich with salad cream. I never knew there was such a thing as a mushroom brush.

Slippy78 · 13/05/2021 23:37

Washing them is so much weirder than peeling them, they go all slimy...

Not if you pat them dry!
youmakemydreamscometrue · 14/05/2021 00:22

So many mushroom peelers!
I barely even flick off any dirt before shovelling them in my face!

thisismadness77 · 14/05/2021 00:26

When I was a child I wanted to be a mushroom peeler when I grew up. It’s a very satisfying task. Unlike practising law. Should have followed my dream....

Champagneforeveryone · 14/05/2021 00:34

Meh, unless there's obvious dirt I don't do anything. If there's actual soil I flick it off, in very special circumstances I may wipe them with kitchen towel.

I have never peeled a mushroom, though I may try tomorrow to see if I've been missing out on anything.

powershowerforanhour · 14/05/2021 00:38

Every day's a school day!

That's what I thought when I read about the mushroom brush. Then a pile of people turned up on the thread saying "oh I just brush them". Youse all have a special wee brush just for mushrooms? Well well. That's my education for today.

partyatthepalace · 14/05/2021 07:41

My mum did, so I used to, then I realised it was stoopid and stopped. I think it would have been because you aren’t sposed to wash them because they take on water. Or maybe a hangover from going out and finding them in the undergrowth where they would have tiny creature poo on them.

WillWonderer · 14/05/2021 07:48

Some people don't peel mushrooms?! Are these the same people who don't like mushrooms? Because that would make sense. Obviously you should peel mushrooms...

DappledThings · 14/05/2021 07:49

DH used to peel them only when I was pregnant because he was worried about soil and risk of listeria.

Outside of pregnancy neither of even wash any veg, certainly don't peel mushrooms.

Twinkie01 · 14/05/2021 07:51

They used to be grown in fertiliser of animal origin so needed to be peeled, washed etc but now are grown in animal fertiliser which has been pasteurised so there's no nasties in it which you need to clean off.

theDudesmummy · 14/05/2021 07:54

I love mushrooms. Never peeled one or thought of peeling one. Wipe with damp kitchen paper.

AngusThermopyle · 14/05/2021 08:48

I've never peeled them, my friend washes hers, I tried it once but I cannot stand the sliminess. I use a little mushroom brush 😬

Is everyone going with the mushrooms in the book being the bog standard white mushrooms in english shops?
🙈 Because there are hundreds of types of mushrooms and some do need peeling🙈

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 14/05/2021 08:58

I only peel them when they have gone over a bit, slightly bouncy but on the verge of slimy.

I love mushrooms, and have been reminded of a mushroom lasagne I had a recipe for, it was really delicious. I haven't made it again since ds2 decided at the grand age of 23 to announce that he did not really like mushrooms...that was news to me! So now they only go in things, and are not the main event!
