To be totally put off running

I've recently started to get back into running - I used to run a lot before my youngest child was born but haven't for years now. I've been really enjoying it and was already feeling the benefits after just a couple of weeks though am still fairly overweight

However this evening I was out running and had slowed to a walk on a very steep hill when someone in a car drove past and opened the window and shouted run fatty run out of the window - they seemed to be a total stranger a youngish girl from what I could see

Now I am totally disheartened I don't think I could face going out running in public again might try to go very early in the morning when it's still dark but don't want to be seen - why would a stranger feel the need to do this

AIBU to stop running

I’m not the only headphones fan 😁. I have noticed how friendly most other runners are. I thought they would judge me for being fat but most acknowledge me in a positive way.

Doona · 12/05/2021 22:28

When I see overweight people running, I feel 100% admiration. It's inspiring, and makes me want to be more active. I don't shout it out car windows though. Maybe I should bellow "you're awesome!"

EXACTLY what I was getting at!!! Grin
UhtredRagnarson · 12/05/2021 22:30

Wear earphones and you won’t hear the idiots. Dont let a stupid prick stop you doing something good for yourself.

Procrastination4 · 12/05/2021 22:31

Absolutely DON’T stop running. If you enjoy it, keep doing it. That person was so very ignorant to shout out anything at you. If you give up running because of that obnoxious git, you are letting them win. Ignore, ignore, ignore and carry on running whenever you feel like it. You don’t need to go at a time when you won’t see people. Why should you!

Love51 · 12/05/2021 22:38

I used to get shouted abuse where I used to live. Now I seem to live in runners central (and run on busier roads) but I have noticed that more than half of women run with someone. The only blokes who run with someone are running with a woman. It is shit that women don't feel entitled to take up space in the world.
Don't let that ignorant person stop you achieving your fitness goals!

HeadNorth · 12/05/2021 22:39

Don't stop running - it is wonderful, do not deprive yourself of something you enjoy that is also beneficial mentally & physically.

Runners don't diss other runners, so I can bet the vile person in the car has never run the length of themselves. Remember - however slowly you run, you are lapping everyone one the sofa. So get those trainers on, get out there and enjoy it.

edwinbear · 12/05/2021 22:40

Headphones are definitely the way forward OP. I’m larger than average on the boob front and the white van brigade yelling (totally unoriginal) comments about my tits used to upset and humiliate me - but I can’t hear the twats now Grin.

These people do it for effect, their own sad little lives are dull as fuck and shouting at strangers is the most exciting thing they can think of to enhance them.

TheSongOfTheSea · 12/05/2021 22:40

I bought a treadmill because I can't be arsed being entertainment for others. Usually men. Life is so much better now that I can run in private.

inmyslippers · 12/05/2021 22:41

From a fat runner, keep going! I love seeing runners out and about that aren't tiny and athletic. Don't like dick heads like that put you off, they'll be more people like me rooting for you

Ohyesiam · 12/05/2021 22:42

Don’t let a total arse wipe define your life. Run all the bloody time.

Oilpyii · 12/05/2021 22:43

I saw an (more than fairly) overweight woman running a few days ago and I found it inspiring, genuinely. It made it feel achievable for me, and I admired her for her attitude. That’s a bit hard/ awkward though to shout out so I guess you don’t hear that. Just the idiots.

Oilpyii · 12/05/2021 22:44

Inspiring by the way as I could not do what she was doing! I was impressed

79andnotout · 12/05/2021 22:45

For every dick shouting 'run fatty' there are about a hundred watching you with admiration thinking we really need to get out there and do the same. Plod on and think of your more silent admirers.

TheSongOfTheSea · 12/05/2021 22:46

@HelplessProcrastinator

Have you lost much from running? I bought my treadmill about a month ago and I'm hoping to drop a dress size. The Internet is full of extremes though, people saying that running doesn't work (which I highly doubt) and influencers saying that they achieved a goddess body with just their treadmill and whatever supplements they are pushing that week.

Be nice to know how it's working out for a real person!

EmeraldShamrock · 12/05/2021 22:50

Screw her silly cow.
I'd give her the middle finger with both hands while sticking my tongue out, I'd probably look deranged but who cares.

NoMoreMuchin · 12/05/2021 23:01

I'm an endurance runner so I'm out and about a fair bit and I get a lot of comments... Mostly encouraging of the good on you/I wish I could still do that variety with the odd rude/letchy rubbish thrown in for good measure.....

A while ago I was running with another woman and a bloke shouting something pretty vile at us and she looked at him with enormous pity and said, "oh, I hope you find some happiness in your life" and he visibly shrunk back into himself... It was pretty awesome to see. So I'm going to start using that one.

There is an old runners saying that life is short, but running makes it seem longer.... Sometimes when you meet an idiot it makes a run seem a bit too long.... Crack on OP, the next run will be different, because no 2 runs are ever the same. Smile

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/05/2021 23:03

Keep going, there is a real support thing in runners from my experience.

I am very slim but unfit. My sister is very overweight but fitter than me. We started running again, together, after 20 years of not running. We have come across all sorts. You get the knackered "Yeah, Im fucked too" look you share with other newbies! And we have lost count of the number of "you can do it!" comments when we have had to stop for breath (usually me!) from other runners.

One brain dead bitch who probably only uses her legs for putting up in front of the tv can be safely ignored.

FredWinnie · 12/05/2021 23:07

Don't give up!
To paraphrase and adapt Churchill's saying - in six months' time you'll be athletic, fit, toned, and a hell of a lot healthier, happier etc, but she will still be a twat

Quirrelsotherface · 12/05/2021 23:07

I can't say enough that their comment has everything to do with them and nothing to do with you.
A person happy in their own skin does not have a need to insult strangers. An unhappy, insecure person does.
Please, please keep running!!!

Southwestrunningmum · 12/05/2021 23:08

Don’t let the bitch win, get back running. Screw then.

spaceghetto · 12/05/2021 23:08

I have always had an odd run. I used to get bullied for it at high school. I started running in lockdown and a group teenagers had a laugh at me. This didn't particularly bother me but someone shouted something very mean out of a car window. They were an adult! I kept on running and now i'm up to 20k runs! I may look silly but the rewards are great. You will shift weight and feel so healthy. They will see you again, you can have the last laugh!

pickingdaisies · 12/05/2021 23:13

You are amazing OP, please don't stop running. Find your anger, and your defiance. Fuck em.

groundcontroltomontydon · 13/05/2021 00:01

How shallow and devoid of meaning must her life be that she gets her kicks from insulting people in the street from the safety of her car! Headphones and sunglasses to filter out the muppets - and keep on running opSmile

LizJamIsFab · 13/05/2021 00:03

Please don’t stop running. They don’t deserve to have that much influence. X
