Angela Rayner sacked [shock]

So Keir Starmer chooses the one shining light in the labour party. A single mother at sixteen, the most inspiring story to come out of the Labour party. Anyone that has listened to Angela about her struggles to obtain a degree and to better herself. Starmer chooses her as the whipping girl for his failures and has sacked her as co-ordinator. He can't remove her as deputy, but how much longer is that position tenable?
I am genuinely shocked and horrified. The failures of the labour party on are on HIM. He should be resigning.

Absolutely livid. What has the Labour party come to.

Once she saved a seat for Lily Magan she could FOTTFSOF as far as I'm concerned and failing to stand up for the bullying of Rosie Duffield means she could FO some more
I'm working class and she is a disgrace

DragonMamma · 08/05/2021 21:07

As I Labour voter I was embarrassed at Angela Rayner and am completely baffled how she ended up where she did.

sst1234 · 08/05/2021 21:07

Idolizing people like Rayner says everything we need to know about why Labour is where it is. The bar is low when people like her are considered are inspiring.

tttigress · 08/05/2021 21:08

@sst1234

You really need to raise your standards if find her inspiring. She is like an X Factor contestant who can’t sing but never fails to mention that she was teenage mum. Her personality, and demeanor reeks of contempt for others that she doesn’t agree with. And her support for the far left including Corbyn means she is a real turn off for labour supporters.
Great post. How will Labour ever win if they keep calling their potential voters Tory scum? Maybe they should actually analysis why people are voting Tory.
lioncitygirl · 08/05/2021 21:08

I mean - the whole fucking party is a shit show, and the guy is looking for a fall person - not him obviously, so his deputy has to fall on her sword, it’s hardly going to be him is it - he has to sacrifice someone 🤷🏻‍♀️

I find it gobsmacking that Starmer is now being accused of throwing women under the bus. Labour have been doing this for quite some time, and often it's been the female politicians doing the throwing!
BiarritzCrackers · 08/05/2021 21:10

I am generally unimpressed by her, but she is clearly popular, and it looks pretty bad. Can see very little positive reaction to this, except comments on the DM.

The timings too - positive unexpected wins for the mayorals in Cambs and West. They should be emphasising that this evening. It was hard enough to get some parts of the media to notice those wins as it is, but let's just knock them even further into the background.

Ginuwine · 08/05/2021 21:10

Labour supporter here.

Why oh why are we so obsessed with peoples backgrounds when we promote folk to the frontbenchers of Labour?

As a feminist who hates class I am so happy to see Angela Rayner where she is.

I also think she's an occasional liability, deliberately gobby and attritional in an unhelpful way which might get some whoops from the "stick it to 'em girl" crowd but actually switches off hundreds of voters who want to see competence not combat (see Jess Phillips for another one).

My point is -

An Old Etonian with the olummiest accent in public life is currently winning the hearts and minds of the people who speak like Angela Rayner.

Yes Rayner's life experience is needed to shape policy in frontline politics.

But as a vote winner image she is a liability and so are many others we seem to favour as visual ciphers for "working class".

She just wasn't very good. Don't take it personally.

corlan · 08/05/2021 21:12

Good. She always reminded me of the students union politicos back in the 80s who were vying with each other to be the most working class.

Always seemed to have a massive chip on her soldier and not be in full control of her mouth.

Moonstone1234 · 08/05/2021 21:13

There was an older voter being interviewed on the BBC this morning. His Father and GF had voted Labour. So had he but he had had enough, he said the previous MP was lazy, hadn’t done anything.

Why don’t Labour get those sort of voters in a room and REALLY listen to them. Not sneer or give the impression they are superior. Then go away and make the changes.

Guavafish · 08/05/2021 21:13

Keir starmer is a loser

tttigress · 08/05/2021 21:13

Due to hiring diverse candidates for the sake of hiring diverse candidates.

The Tories have had 2 female prime minister's and Sunak has a good shot at being the first Asian PM.

The difference between the Tory and Labour approach to diversity, is they actually expect their diverse candidates to get there on merit.

Rayner just got there as a box ticking excercise.

Undersnatch · 08/05/2021 21:13

I don’t rate Raynor but Starmer is grim. I’m not surprised.

She got voted in as Deputy Leader by the party. Starmer can't sack her from that.
Ohthatsgreat · 08/05/2021 21:20

She tried to smear the Conservative candidate Jill Mortimer as having previously lived in a tax haven and demanded to know how she personally gained in tax breaks. It transpired that Jill Mortimer (who ended up winning the seat) actually moved to the Cayman Islands with her (now ex) husband who is a well renowned barrister who was working at the island’s regulator on anti fraud and anti corruption activities. There was no evidence at all of moving there for tax avoidance as AR accused her of.

This is the kind of ill informed and smearing politics AR indulges in. Not fit for a senior role at all. She could have used the same energy to actually talk to the people of Hartlepool and promote what policies the Labour Party had to improve their lives. But no, accuse a fellow candidate of being a tax dodger was the approach and it rightly failed.

Moonstone1234 · 08/05/2021 21:21

Tati - yes you are right. And so is Gin. It is a box ticking exercise and could you imagine Rayner on the world stage or Abbott or Corbyn??

Yes Sunak has a shot at the PM position. He seems to really care as to what he does. Labour a pontificating about gender and self ID and it all backfires

Scout2016 · 08/05/2021 21:22

Someone on FWR flagged this massive mis-step; trying to smear Mortimer for having lived in Caymans. Suggested her husband was a tax dodging banker when he was actually a barrister working in financial regulation. I don't like Rayner but even if you are a fan surely you can see that's not great work, however you look at it.

Ostara212 · 08/05/2021 21:22

@Youarecountingonme

So you don't think Starmer should be taking responsibility for what has happened?
Yes, but I don't know some of the incidents mentioned here.

But Starmer should be first to go, surely? He's like the invisible leader.

If he had made a clear statement saying "I want to work with the Tory government because of the pandemic", I wouldn't have minded. But I don't know what he stands for.

sst1234 · 08/05/2021 21:25

@tttigress

You make an interesting observation there about the female and BAME Tories being expected to get there on merit and being of a better calibre. Some of the most effective Tories are women or BAME - the two female PMs, Nadhim Zahawi heading up vaccination program, Liz Truss quietly doing the trade deals, Rishi Sunak at the treasury, Sajid Javid before him, Kwasi Kwarteng, Kemi Badenoch….the list goes on.
I wonder why Tories attract the more talented females and more results driven BAME candidates while labour attracts low calibre, low performing ones.

Moonstone1234 · 08/05/2021 21:26

Yes, I understood she accused Jill Mortimer of all sorts without checking the facts

1Morewineplease · 08/05/2021 21:27

Being a young single mum who struggled to get a degree is not an excuse for incompetence.
Sorry.

House2home21 · 08/05/2021 21:27

I agree with @MapleMay11 I can’t remember what I was watching but it was in the run up to the GE in 2019 and I was open mouthed for about 10 mins. She was terribly behaved, unprofessional, and I’m sorry to say actually quite aggressive verbally, and physically intimidating, and no she wasn’t just been confident/assertive. I am confident and assertive and I think had I been on the receiving end of what she was dishing out I’d have felt most uncomfortable. I can’t believe she has been given the roles she has since.

Wow Rayner sounds like she’s thick as two short planks. If Labour put people like this in charge, they deserve to be where they are today.
