To miss net curtains

Most people I know think net curtains are old fashioned and something only your granny would have but I really think they are better than blinds. They let all the light in but provide privacy as no one can see through them. Blinds, when open, provide no privacy and everyone walking past your house can see straight in.

When I walk around my neighbourhood I've noticed 90% of the houses have their blinds closed all of the time. I'm sure this is because they're uncomfortable with the lack of privacy and dont want randomers staring in at them.

I couldn't live like this. I have to have my blinds open during the day, but would really prefer net curtains.

AIBU to hope curtains make a comeback?

I have some! Get them if you like them. Be a trendsetter!

EBearhug · 03/04/2021 13:41

I have net curtains at the front. If someone is judging me for being old-fashioned, I don't care.

Canigooutyet · 03/04/2021 13:43

If you want nets why not just get them. You don’t have to follow what other people do.

I love my blinds and tilt them so I get privacy and light. Nets get caught in my windows when I close them.

Then of course voile panels are also another good one at providing privacy from nosy neighbours

BonnieDundee · 03/04/2021 13:44

Voices are better and you can get them in any colours

Poptart4 · 03/04/2021 13:46

I had suggested it but my teen dd insisted she wouldn't be able to show her face in school if we did. According to dd, only poor people have net curtains because they cant afford blinds Confused and she would be teased by the other kids.

I know this is bullshit but I also remember what it's like.to be an awkward teen and dont want to be the reason shes teased in school. Especially has the blinds dont bother me that much. I'd just prefer nets.

I love my voile

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/04/2021 13:46

Voiles are just net curtains rebranded for people who don't want to admit that they need nets.

Steph64 · 03/04/2021 13:46

I was thinking the same this morning.

Are voile panels just posh nets?

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 03/04/2021 13:46

I have muslin curtains rather than nylon nets, but they have the same effect on privacy. I love the diffuse light they give, too.

I wouldn’t ever want to have my windows without them - I love my privacy. We have a large and very pretty shrub in front of our living room window and everyone passing stops or turns looks at it, so they’d be forever nosing into the room too!

VerityWibbleWobble · 03/04/2021 13:46

My neighbour has recently put up new nets and I stood there looking at them thinking I need to go back to them at my windows!

FOJN · 03/04/2021 13:47

You can get sheer roller blinds for privacy which might feel less old fashioned.

Cafe curtains (curtains that cover only the bottom half of a window) might be a compromise.

SwanShaped · 03/04/2021 13:47

I have net blinds. So they’re more modern looking but let in all the light. Then curtains for night time. I also hate slat blinds where you can’t look out the window.

ludothedog · 03/04/2021 13:48

I had some in my old flat. I loved them. Especially when I had the window open and they blew in the wind.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 03/04/2021 13:48

Or window film that enables you to look out but not for others to look in is also an option.

Nitgel · 03/04/2021 13:48

I have plain nets they look nice

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 03/04/2021 13:49

With shutters you can turn them to have light and privacy.

But if you prefer nets, have nets!

BonnieDundee · 03/04/2021 13:50

voiles (not voices) are slightly different to nets. Nets are lacy, voiles are more smooth and actually look quite nice. I don't have them as when I moved into this house it already had a very expensive looking roman blind and I don't have the heart to take it down. But I have no privacy at all

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 03/04/2021 13:53

I have nets for all the reasons you have said . Let all the light in and give privacy.

Smudgeis13 · 03/04/2021 13:53

I have net curtains at the front. Upstairs and downstairs. Even more important than privacy, no one can see if the windows need cleaning. I throw them into the wash occasionally. I’m not a complete slut. I Re hang them wet. Any creases fall out.

tobee · 03/04/2021 13:59

I hate net curtains. I'm not bothered if people can see in.

coodawoodashooda · 03/04/2021 13:59

I'm getting voile when the shops open. I can't wait.

Steptoeshorse1965 · 03/04/2021 14:04

Why wait for any kind of comeback??? you have a mind don't you? If YOU want them, and value the privacy they afford, put them up. Don't follow the herd, do what suits you. I think they are great, afford superb privacy.

StCharlotte · 03/04/2021 14:08

@AlfonsoTheTerrible

Cafe curtains (curtains that cover only the bottom half of a window) might be a compromise.
I normally have these in our bay and they look lovely but we recently had new windows and I can't work out how to attach them to the bastard plastic frames. Command hooks didn't work.

My window looks like It's lost all its teeth.

RogueV · 03/04/2021 14:10

I have them at the front too. Get them!
