To miss net curtains

Most people I know think net curtains are old fashioned and something only your granny would have but I really think they are better than blinds. They let all the light in but provide privacy as no one can see through them. Blinds, when open, provide no privacy and everyone walking past your house can see straight in.

When I walk around my neighbourhood I've noticed 90% of the houses have their blinds closed all of the time. I'm sure this is because they're uncomfortable with the lack of privacy and dont want randomers staring in at them.

I couldn't live like this. I have to have my blinds open during the day, but would really prefer net curtains.

AIBU to hope curtains make a comeback?

My DD has plain nets in her bedroom window as it faces the front, and we’re on a bus route - people can easily see in from the top deck. She doesn’t mind them all at, they’re inoffensive and let plenty of light in.
If you want them, get them!

*I normally have these in our bay and they look lovely but we recently had new windows and I can't work out how to attach them to the bastard plastic frames. Command hooks didn't work.

My window looks like It's lost all its teeth.*
Can you screw cup-hooks into the wall above the window? We do this, and have the nets on curtain wire.

I live on an estate where almost everyone has blinds, I've always had nets because they're more private but very recently I've changed to Venetian blinds for a change and have found them just as easy when it comes to privacy. Just tilt and go

I'm 28 and have net curtains 🙈🙈🙈

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 04/04/2021 13:12

I still have nets, I get tension poles and eyelet ones from Dunelm because they are smarter without all those fussy gathers. And they are more gauze than net.

woodhill · 04/04/2021 13:18

I have the jardiniere ones from Dunelm. I have big windows and I would rather keep, the light and the windowsill - don't care what is fashionanable

I love net curtains, get them if you like them!

I love my net curtains!!
When we moved into our house 8 years ago we had blinds on all the windows. I hated them - the noise of the "clacking" together when the window is open drives me mad. The constant having to re-hook the plastic chain at the bottom is annoying and they needed most of the slate replaced.
our landlord was really good and offered to replace them all - I said no!
Within a week I had rang my nan and got a bag full of nets!
I spent the week on my sewing machine and in the evenings I sewed on beads, sequins and ribbons to the bottom of the nets.
The landlord loved them!
The letting agency didn't and tried to charge us £350 to hold on our account to replace the blinds when we leave - thankfully the landlord sided with us.
I also made all the curtains for every room too!
I am currently making a pair of Harry Potter curtains from a duvet cover for my niece.
I have made a complete garden set (cushion covers, place mats, napkins, table cloth and lounger set) from another duvet cover that cost me £3 from a charity shop!
Make do and Mend was my nans motto and during the pandemic it has been a lifesaver for me!
If that makes me old fashioned then so be it - I'm proud to be like my nan!I

As a footnote - my 18 year old son is currently making himself a rather nice waistcoat from scratch and has just ordered his own sewing machine!!GrinGrin

I hate net curtains and blinds down all the time. I like light streaming in with nothing covering the windows. If people want to look in, let them!

I quite agree! I used to have a huge front window that had a bus stop outside it with another stop opposite and I still couldn't get bothered about people seeing in. I absolutely loathe nets.

Gerla · 04/04/2021 14:02

I don't want people to see me getting dressed though!!

Howyoualldoworkme · 04/04/2021 14:04

I dipped my nets yesterday, I've got half nets in the front bay window. They look very nice in the sunshine today Smile

SplendidSuns1000 · 04/04/2021 14:25

My house has a fairly modern interior and we have long voiles on the windows and they don't look dated imo. I'm not sure if I'd have full lacy curtains in my house but they look lovely in others.

FooFighter99 · 04/04/2021 17:32

I love my net curtains!! Blinds are horrible. And we have to have something up at the window as we live on a busy road and I don’t want people staring in...

Shutters or shutter blinds (like huge slatted Venetians) let all the light in and can be adjusted to any angle for privacy - also provide great security.

But if you wants nets - go for it, your windows.

I prefer the travelling scrotes of the town to not be able to look in through the window and see that a) the house is empty, the exact type and position of the window locks or that one of the inhabitants uses mobility/disability related equipment, so would be more of a pushover and b) there's a TV, stereo, things that could indicate there might be some interesting stuff in the rest of the house and that there's a shed that might contain some good tools or at least will provide a handy stopping off point when coming in over the ten foot wall behind the house via the easily accessed garden in the next street.

It's also quite nice to be able to do exactly what you want with your DP whilst on the sofa/living room rug/stairs/kitchen table/wherever when the feeling takes you without acquiring an audience or traumatising the bloke from Amazon who walks past to deliver to the house next door.

Another vote for voiles here Smile

moochingtothepub · 05/04/2021 11:49

@Poptart4

My kids are obviously eternally damaged then because I had voiles until I moved, no need now as not overlooked
