To miss net curtains

Most people I know think net curtains are old fashioned and something only your granny would have but I really think they are better than blinds. They let all the light in but provide privacy as no one can see through them. Blinds, when open, provide no privacy and everyone walking past your house can see straight in.

When I walk around my neighbourhood I've noticed 90% of the houses have their blinds closed all of the time. I'm sure this is because they're uncomfortable with the lack of privacy and dont want randomers staring in at them.

I couldn't live like this. I have to have my blinds open during the day, but would really prefer net curtains.

AIBU to hope curtains make a comeback?

I've got two big windows that face out with net curtains on the lower half. They are ivory cafe net. I don't care if I'm old fashioned, I don't want people gawping in my home.

RoaryMouth · 03/04/2021 15:14

I have nets and love them. Tall windows and long nets. I have plain ones (would they be called voiles then?) and some more dated patterned ones which I also like a lot. Let in all the light but keep nosey folk from looking in.

Butterflyfox · 03/04/2021 15:24

I know this is whole different level of investment but do you like shutters? Sitting in front of mine now. Light flooding in. With the right angle I can see out and yet feel soo private. I also think they look smart from inside or out.

lazylinguist · 03/04/2021 15:29

I'm not a fan of nets. Voiles aren't too bad I suppose. I have my curtains open during the day and usually shut when it gets dark. I don't particularly care if people can see into my house tbh!

Ericaequites · 03/04/2021 15:52

I have light cotton blend eyelet curtains as cats destroy net curtains. Diffuse light comes in, and no one can see in. I call it a win.

SpringTimeDream · 03/04/2021 15:54

Granny is that you?

PS I also don't want a knitted toilet roll holder.

Vile things.

poppycat10 · 03/04/2021 15:58

Was this because I said on the "banning thread" that I would ban net curtains?

I really would. Sorry.

A few streets away from us a family have done up a run-down bungalow. It looks lovely now, new front door, modern windows etc. But they have ruined the effect by adding net curtains.

torquewench · 03/04/2021 16:00

When I was living with my grubby ex, one of the first things I did was change his filthy chintzy net curtains (left by the previous owner, but he'd been living there about 8 years and never washed them) for some nice clean voiles. And cleaned the windows. The old ones disintegrated as soon as I touched them 🤢

jannyapple · 03/04/2021 16:03

They are called Voiles now lol I have them and they don't look awful at all
They are the net idea but a lovely fabric with style

MMM2 · 03/04/2021 16:06

Love my nets !

Anystarinthesky · 03/04/2021 16:16

I love nets/voiles too! I always had them in my front room. I think they are pretty.

I live with DP now and he won't have them as they are too old fashioned in his eyes.

Happycat1212 · 03/04/2021 16:18

Why do you care if they are in fashion or not? If you like them get them? I don’t like them so I don’t have them, I don’t have blinds either just curtains which are open in the day and I don’t care if anyone can see in, I have a huge hedge around my front garden anyway so no one can see in.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/04/2021 16:20

@ItsSnowJokes

Get mirror film, I have it on my front kitchen window that is right on the road. Let's light in but no one can see in at all. All they get is a reflection of themselves.
Ah yes, that lovely Conspiracy Theorist/Cannabis farm aesthetic.
Somanysocks · 03/04/2021 16:20

I have plain nets at the front, couldn't give a stuff what people think.

The kitchen blind is irritating as it always needs adjusting for maximum light, hate being in the dark, I draw the line at nets in the kitchen though.

missymoomoomoomoomoo · 03/04/2021 16:21

I miss net curtains but thats just because my dickhead of a kitten shredded mine.

I now have the stick on privacy film

MyDcAreMarvel · 03/04/2021 16:24

How much can people really see though unless they are walking on your driveway /front garden. Our playroom is at the front of the house and the kitchen/diner and living area at the back, so I would not care if people could see the front.

Kettledodger · 03/04/2021 16:24

We live on a very busy junction and all but one of our windows face out towards the road. There is no way I would be without my nets

ToffeeNotCoffee · 03/04/2021 16:25

I love net curtains. They remind me of home. I can't really put any up at the front bay window as there are blinds there. Same for the plantation blinds at our bedroom window. I don't really like either but it would be a waste to take them down.

Curtains elsewhere as window coverings but no nets. Not really practical for various reasons.

WeeWillyWanky · 03/04/2021 16:26

I love my nets! My cat dips under them to look out and sometimes I pretend he's wearing a wedding veil.

NotMeNoNo · 03/04/2021 16:35

We have big bay windows, facing straight to the road, and the front window looks all the way through the house. Loads of passers by. When we moved in I put up some cheap plain voiles just until we could get organized with shutters/blinds. They are still there 4 years later. Honestly they are excellent value. I value my privacy.

If we had a front garden or were in a quieter location it would be different. A lot of neighbours have shutters or slat blinds but they must be pretty dark inside.

Don't be tempted by colours or patterns though.

4cats2kids · 03/04/2021 16:50

I love nets. Don’t like feeling like I live in a goldfish bowl and they look pretty.

canigooutyet · 03/04/2021 16:55

this was the upvc window thing I mentioned early. Iirc there was also something similar for nets and voiles so you don't have to drill

lachy · 03/04/2021 17:02

We have Voiles up at our front window; we have a few people walking past our house, so it just keeps our lounge a little more private.

If you want them, get them, ignore what anyone else thinks.

Backtoschool101 · 03/04/2021 17:06

I have net curtains. Bloody love them!

theliverpoolone · 03/04/2021 17:09

I have voiles in my bedroom and am planning to get them for the living room when its decorated - will see how long they last with the cats! I also have a teenager - she's never mentioned anything about them being embarrassing, but then our whole house at the moment is embarrassing so they're probably the least of her worries Grin
