To be really upset with asda?

I'm a very lone parent of two children, 6 year old is a blue badge holder due to her disabilities and her 3 year old sister is autistic.

We receive the FSM vouchers for both children as I can't work due to DD1's needs. The only place you can use the vouchers online is Asda.

About 2 weeks ago I placed a click and collect order for Asda today, to pick up 11am. Used £30 worth of vouchers (the second week comes next week) and paid the additional.

Somehow the store had no knowledge of the order. I literally havd no food in the house apart from a punnet of blueberries and several boxes of cereal. I asked if there was no way they could do it today and I collect later, he shrugged his shoulders and told me to go and get it myself. I genuinely can not take both children in the store on my own, hence click and collect.

So then I rang customer services who told me to rebook whilst they processed the refund, I could possibly receive the refund tomorrow but most likely after the weekend. There are also no click and collect slots available until Tuesday. I would have been happy if they could have given us a slot tomorrow. I also need the voucher refunded before I can do the order, although worst case scenario I could have done a split order and ordered the voucher stuff for in the week and the urgent essentials using cash.

To order the cash side of the order would be using the fuel costs for the week until the refund is processed so its tricky but food is essential.

Sorry have ended up in a ramble.

AIBU to think they could have done something to help me get a food slot either this evening or tomorrow considering it was their error?

I can't get a slot at any supermarket until Monday so I'm completely stuck. The money side is hugely inconvenient considering we have the lowest income but the lack of being able to get a slot has really upset me.

I'm prepared to be told I'm being unreasonable, I've had 2 hours sleep!

This! I'd definitely ring up further and complain, surely there is something they can do out of good will in this circumstance. Even if its a good will voucher to get the basics to tide you over until the refund comes through. Hope you get it sorted op.

I know it's pricier than Asda but the co-op do same day delivery atm, free delivery over £15. O got a slot to deliver in 4 hours

Is there a food bank nearby that can help. I think the supermarkets should keep a couple of emergency slots free each day for things like this. Hopefully the situation will get better as we come out of lock down.

Yep. My mum spent hundreds of pounds at Tesco's over the years due to threads similar to this. There have been a lot over the years. Asda are the most frequent offenders.

They ,Asda that is, are really shit at sorting out mistakes.

No one can do a full benefits check without the full info but yes with a rent of say £800 a month it would be a tax free income of approx £40k.

That level of income is more than the majority have by a long long way...so it’s hard to fathom that you’d have nothing in no basics, no tins, or anything...it’s odd!

Bare in mind that due to their needs neither eat great diets, a lot of what are staples usually wouldn't be touched by my two so there is little point having a lot of the usual staples in. 95% of food in our house is fridge food and bakery style food.

Also the income seems high but considering how expensive their needs are, it doesn't translate into practice.

@ThankYouAsda you don’t need to explain your self. The dla and tax credits disability premium is to meet the additional costs of raising disabled children. It doesn’t mean you have loads of “spare” money.
Do check you are getting the correct amount of child tax credit for each child though , the amounts you posted seem too low. Pm me if you would like me to check for you.

@imnotbent. Sorry - googled DLA and rules have changed on under 5s - never used to be paid, as it was deemed under 5s needed constant supervision anyway. My apologies for that. I also took issue with what I saw as the assumption that DLA was in payment so what’s the problem ? If that’s not what you meant then I apologise unreservedly for that too.

I have a substantial disability and my PIP does cover some of the cost but not all, and if I had a penny for every time someone has said ‘that’s what your DLA (or now PIP) is for’ I’d be rich. I took it that you meant something similar and was just trying to point out that the reason these benefits are paid is in recognition of the extra costs of living with a disability, so they may have already been eaten up in expenses before food is considered. I do wonder how you arrived at £500 a week though. Is that based on all benefits that would be payable, because DLA - even if it was paid at the top rate for both children, would be £300 - substantially less if lower rates are paid.

I’m talking several years ago - you couldn’t claim DLA for a child under five, as it was deemed that they would need constant supervision anyway up until that age, regardless of the disability. The rules changed and are now dependent on how much extra care the child needs when compared a child without that disability - and there are age and other restrictions on eligibility for the mobility components of DLA. For example a child under three years of age will generally not qualify for the higher rate mobility component and a child under five will not qualify for the lower rate - there are various reasons and exceptions to these rules, and it gets a bit complicated, so this is just a generalisation.
