AIBU to find 'Easter trees' ridiculous?

I'm already annoyed at the general melding of traditional holiday themes, eg Easter crackers, Halloween wreaths etc. Yes it is precisely none of my business and people can decorate or pull crackers however they wish but I have lots of irrelevant opinions.

But Easter trees? Easter trees have tipped me over the edge into proper Grumpy Old Women territory. Now (an important distinction) if the 'tree' is the shrubbery type then that's fine. But NOT an evergreen tree. That's nonsense!!

Evergreen trees are very well suited to Christmas because they are a symbol of life and hope when most trees are empty and bare. Makes no sense then to use them for a springtime celebration. Easter time is time to celebrate new life; lambs chicks, flowers budding and trees growing new leaves. An evergreen tree does not symbolise these things.

YABU: it's just a decoration, fuck off and mind your own business
or
YANBU: Evergreen trees have no place in Easter decorations

Rant over. Thanks for reading. I'm off to have a herbal tea to calm down. 🍵

Do you mean people are getting their actual Christmas trees out of the loft and hanging eggs off them? I haven't heard of this.

But it's not a bad idea. It's a chance to get your money's worth out of something you used to only use once a year.

And what's wrong with decorating your house all year round? I like the new door wreath for each season thing.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 31/03/2021 09:11

My tree - in a box - is actually in the middle of my living room (we had the builders in so everything is on the wrong place).

I have an idea...

I wasn't going to post a picture because it is ridiculously outing, but here it is. I agree it is competely ridiculous.... Kind of love it though.

All the Easter trees I've ever seen are twigs with buds decorated with eggs. Symbols of fertility and growth. I've never seen an evergreen easte tree.

But YABU because all symbolic celebrations and markers of the changing seasons are a good thing. I love festivals, especially ones that bring together religion and nature. I love that Easter is a bonkers mix of eggs and rabbits and Christ on the cross. We are celebrating rebirth after death, spring after winter.

ForeverInADay · 31/03/2021 11:42

@MummyJ12 thank you!! 😀. I think, despite an entire thread on paint colour the other day, I found my paint!!

MummyJ12 · 31/03/2021 11:44

Brilliant! I think I may have been on the same thread (embarrassingly all of my house is painted in grey/greige colours, but it’s what I like!) Blush

lazylinguist · 31/03/2021 11:58

I’m afraid I think there’s a correlation between people who put Easter wreaths on their front door and people who don’t know what Lent is, or what it’s for anymore

I think most people know what Easter and Lent were for, but that doesn't mean they should particularly care, unless they happen to be religious of course. People (in England at least) who take Easter seriously as a religious festival must surely be in a pretty small minority now.

Since time immemorial people have appropriated or amalgamated religious festivals or carried on celebrating elememts of them long after belief in the deities has waned. That's totally normal. We keep up habits and traditions we like and ditch ones we don't. For me, Easter means chocolate eggs and the beginning of Spring. That's it.

digthroughtheditches · 31/03/2021 12:06

I absolutely love the pastel shades at Easter. But in saying that I can't bring myself to buy Easter decs. Just seems bizarre. Like do you have them up for one day or all month like Christmas. I'm sick of Christmas decorations by Christmas Day so just can't imagine doing it all over in April.
Halloween however, spook the house right up all month, I don't dust. It's great!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 31/03/2021 12:15

I was given this last week when it failed to sell at a friend's garage sale.It still has the price ticket on the back, $45 Aud. About £30! I'm' too embatassed to put it on my door.

@SchrodingersImmigrant @Icecreamsoda99

Thank you very much. I love a bit of frivolity! I can at least laugh at myself though.

@alwayscrashinginthesamecar1
Put it up with pride. Or send it to me, I clearly have no shame 😁 as is witnessed by the tree of tat in my living room.

MrsZola · 31/03/2021 12:59

I'm half German, we always had an Easter tree. My mum would cut branches off a shrub/tree - whatever took her fancy that year - put them in a jug or vase and hang little wooden eggs, rabbits, and chicks on them. It's not Easter in my family's houses without one.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 31/03/2021 13:11

So YOU don't like Easter trees to the extent that you needed to start a thread to incite other bored/ranty/judgemental posters to say the same - and to hopefully make value judgements of people who do like them?

Not enough for you to acknowledge to yourself that you don't like them, you're attention seeking enough to need validation of that? It says lots about you, OP, that you need this kind of salve. How sad.

FatCatThinCat · 31/03/2021 14:17

7 year old DS's traditional Swedish easter decoration. I think it looks lovely. Tomorrow it will look like it's been murdered by a cat.

FurrySlipperBoots · 31/03/2021 14:23

I've never seen evergreens decorated for Easter! We've always had 'Easter twigs' (I'm from Germany) and these are just that, blossoming twigs in a vase of water, decorated with little wooden rabbits and fluffy chicks and things.

Personally I love the German traditions, and don't mind if they're catching on over here. The UK tends to do a tackier version of Easter and Christmas (fake trees, plastic decorations, cartoony type rabbit for the Easter bunny) so a move towards the more natural/wooden/hand painted type way they do things in Europe is alright by me!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 31/03/2021 14:26

I'm really glad to see that other posters are also fed up with the joy-suckers of really benign and personal preferences. I don't have an Easter tree but we do basic egg-painting as my Mum is Austrian and it's a tradition there.

I'd never, ever criticise something that other people like or enjoy. What's the point of that? It's always unhappy, intolerant and dissatisfied people who do it, nobody else feels the need to.

Happy Easter to everyone, whatever you're doing/not doing.

Tocktickclick · 31/03/2021 14:32

I think it's nice that people have little traditions that make themselves and their families happy. Less enamoured of constant need to photograph it and share all over social media though.
I'm aware I'm very old fashioned and just don't get it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 31/03/2021 14:47

Maybe so, Tocktickclick but it doesn't really need saying, does it? I quite like seeing posters photos here, if I didn't, I'd just scroll past them.

This thread though was started with the intention of tribe-finding and mockery.
