AIBU to find 'Easter trees' ridiculous?

I'm already annoyed at the general melding of traditional holiday themes, eg Easter crackers, Halloween wreaths etc. Yes it is precisely none of my business and people can decorate or pull crackers however they wish but I have lots of irrelevant opinions.

But Easter trees? Easter trees have tipped me over the edge into proper Grumpy Old Women territory. Now (an important distinction) if the 'tree' is the shrubbery type then that's fine. But NOT an evergreen tree. That's nonsense!!

Evergreen trees are very well suited to Christmas because they are a symbol of life and hope when most trees are empty and bare. Makes no sense then to use them for a springtime celebration. Easter time is time to celebrate new life; lambs chicks, flowers budding and trees growing new leaves. An evergreen tree does not symbolise these things.

YABU: it's just a decoration, fuck off and mind your own business
or
YANBU: Evergreen trees have no place in Easter decorations

Rant over. Thanks for reading. I'm off to have a herbal tea to calm down. 🍵

It's twigs we hang decorations on. We have done it since dd1 was a baby. She's 11.

Cocolapew · 30/03/2021 18:07

Nothing says Easter more than a unicorn, Lndnmummy 😁

Unfinished · 30/03/2021 18:12

Oh god
Every year people are upset by other people’s joy at various holidays
Any more than what they deem to be the appropriate amount of celebration is silly/consumerist/wrong

Is anyone forcing you to buy an Easter Tree?
No? Wind your neck in then

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/03/2021 18:24

We used to have either traditional eggs or eggs in knitted dresses on the branches😁 I need to get some when I can finally fly to visit my family
Wax painting technique is fun but I am absolutely useless.

If anyone wants to colour eggs with kids (and you can hang them then on the Easter tree) you can empty eggs and them collect small leaves, put them on eggs and secure with cut up old panty house. Boil in a water with onion skins for brown, turmeric for yellow, red cabbage for blue, if I remember correctly. You can also use whole eggs, hardboil them like this and eat them over easter.

Happy Easter tree decorating😂

I think people are just finding pleasure where they can at the moment.

callmeH · 30/03/2021 21:18

@Dogsaresomucheasier

I’ve not seen an evergreen Eater tree. Pussy Willow sticks in a vase with eggs hanging off them were around in my (equally grumpy old lady’s) youth, though. That is an Easter tree imho.
We had the pussy will branches forty-plus years ago in Germany, I still have the little set of wooden eggs, rabbits etc.. However the current amount of tat is horrendous, I saw Easter door wreaths yesterday, but as long as people are dumb enough to buy the stuff the shops will sell it.
SprungisSpringYaY · 30/03/2021 21:28

Wow love that tree guy.
It's beautiful

Decorating for Easter, Xmas and Halloween is decorating for the season. I adore decorating for them it marks a change in seasons.. We have twiggy white Easter tree, and Easter themed Dec's.
Same with Halloween and Xmas.

NemoRocksMyWorld · 30/03/2021 21:56

We dragged an old white Christmas tree out the loft and covered it in home made pastel pompoms and hand painted eggs and Easter bonnet decorations... We even painted a large polystyrene egg for the top of the tree.... It looks full on ridiculous.

But, you know, I have 4dc. We have been to the local park 57 billion times and been out on the bikes a similar amount. It took up a Saturday, didn't cost loads and the kids love it. And I look at it and smile.

It's a bit silly, I'm not selling it to anyone as traditional or religious, but it is fun and happy, and surely no one begrudges us that!

Serin · 30/03/2021 23:28

Nemo, you sound lovely but there's always someone who will begrudge you happiness.
When ours were growing up we celebrated everything, Chinese New Year, Queens Birthday, Equinox, Halloween, Pride, Grand National Day. GrinThere are never too many reasons to rejoice.
As a family we have spent the Easter triduum everywhere from Worth Abbey, to Taize, to Rome so we do have some understanding of the meaning of Easter as well.

Lndnmummy · 31/03/2021 08:07

@SchrodingersImmigrant those eggs are beautiful! Love them. Happy Easter!

You should see the wax ones I made😂 Sadly I can't find any picture of ghat horror show😂😂😂

Happy Easter!

popspops · 31/03/2021 08:21

We have made egg shaped bird food balls and hung them from a tree in the garden. It's our twist on a tradition.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/03/2021 08:23

Awwwww!
I need to stop feeding birds. Like a 4th person pointed out few days ago that our wood pigeons and starlings visiting my garden are unusually fatBlush

Angel2702 · 31/03/2021 08:25

@VestaTilley

I completely agree.

I’m afraid I think there’s a correlation between people who put Easter wreaths on their front door and people who don’t know what Lent is, or what it’s for anymore Angry

The conflation of all these things is because people want to live seasonally, like the ritual of living seasonally, but without going to church any more they have nothing to anchor that in or understand why we have certain things at certain times of year. Add in the influence of American influencers, Instagram and Pinterest and you get a massive cultural shift taking place in a couple of years in what previously took decades.

You can celebrate Easter and not turn it in to a commercialised tat fest. Maybe start by educating yourself and children about what Lent and Easter are... (not you OP- I agree with you!)

Nonsense

The church is decorated for Easter, we have always made floral wreaths at Easter which we started at the church toddler group 30 odd years ago.

My children attend a church school and have all taken in flowers this week to make Easter decorations and a floral cross.

Don’t decorate but doesn’t mean that people who do are not doing so as part of the religious celebrations.

Graciebobcat · 31/03/2021 08:26

Hanging eggs from a tree = wrong
Mini Eggs in a chocolate Shredded wheat nest = correct

Graciebobcat · 31/03/2021 08:38

Celebrations and traditions relating to the coming of spring, egg-decorating etc are far older than Christianity. Easter comes from Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring and fertility.

Graciebobcat · 31/03/2021 08:40

So people don't need the church to "live seasonally". They were doing so for a long time before Christianity turned up and will continue to do so after it has gone away again.

Onlinedilema · 31/03/2021 08:44

I have never heard of an Easter tree. I would absolutely love it if the trees near me sprouted chocolate eggs at Easter.

Gobbeldegook · 31/03/2021 08:48

@Dogsaresomucheasier what are pussy sticks 🤣🤣🤣

RoseMartha · 31/03/2021 08:49

I had a little white one we hung eggs on. I got rid of it when i moved as sadly I had to downside and storage was greatly reduced. It wasnt expensive about £12.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 31/03/2021 08:52

@JerryMoreIceCream

Good lord I have just looked and seen that people are digging out their Christmas trees, yes that is ridiculous. But my point stands it is just meant to be some twigs in a vase with some plastic decorated eggs hung on them to celebrate Easter and the coming of Spring.
Some people still have their trees up... there’s a flat near us who have a fully lit tree on their courtyard (basement flat). I have my suspicions (watch too many crime shows).
MummyJ12 · 31/03/2021 08:52

I hang a few glass eggs from my cherry blossom tree in the hall too....Blush

Gobbeldegook · 31/03/2021 08:55

Little white trees are fine but the trend of putting Christmas trees up and decorating for Halloween, then changing the decor for Christmas, then changing it again for Easter is bizzare.
I'm fed up of my Christmas tree by boxing day and I put it up on the 1st December. Couldn't imagine having it cluttering the room up from October to April. Truly barmy. But each to their own.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/03/2021 09:03

I must know very untrendy people because I don't know anyone or of anyone who does that.

Is it like couple of people on insta doing this and the people take it for a trend?
