AIBU to find 'Easter trees' ridiculous?

I'm already annoyed at the general melding of traditional holiday themes, eg Easter crackers, Halloween wreaths etc. Yes it is precisely none of my business and people can decorate or pull crackers however they wish but I have lots of irrelevant opinions.

But Easter trees? Easter trees have tipped me over the edge into proper Grumpy Old Women territory. Now (an important distinction) if the 'tree' is the shrubbery type then that's fine. But NOT an evergreen tree. That's nonsense!!

Evergreen trees are very well suited to Christmas because they are a symbol of life and hope when most trees are empty and bare. Makes no sense then to use them for a springtime celebration. Easter time is time to celebrate new life; lambs chicks, flowers budding and trees growing new leaves. An evergreen tree does not symbolise these things.

YABU: it's just a decoration, fuck off and mind your own business
or
YANBU: Evergreen trees have no place in Easter decorations

Rant over. Thanks for reading. I'm off to have a herbal tea to calm down. 🍵

@Palavah

You're writing off a whole culture as batshit?

Point out where I said that.

Can't can you, because I never said that or anything LIKE that.

Now go and bait and goad someone else. Go on shooo shooooo!

littlepattilou · 30/03/2021 14:08

I said Easter TREES are batshit. (Just like the majority of people on this thread.) I did not say EASTER was batshit. FFS Hmm

Funny how (some) people see/read what they choose to, just to enable them to have a fucking go at someone!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/03/2021 14:14

Well it's Easter this weekend and I don't know about where you live, but the trees aren't exactly lush and verdant with leaves here yet! I mean... they're starting to come into leaf, just about.

But that's the point isn't it? You're celebrating the deciduous trees coming back to life, that's why you use their branches (or pussy willow which is coming out now).

Lndnmummy · 30/03/2021 14:15

It’s customary in Scandinavia where I am from. I haven’t seen my family for nearly 2 years due to covid so decided to make one this year with my kids. They were so happy to make it and it did lift my spirits after a traumatic year and brings some festive cheer to our second Easter without family. So to me yabu but different strokes and all that. Added a picture of one of the trees I made with ds.

I am happy for this thread because I didn't knwo the name for a pussy willow and kept making my husband "touch the kittens!" (Kittens in my native language) in a park last week and I think he worries I lost it. So were probably people passing us😂

We often use forsythia branches for decorations too. It's called "golden rain" in there😁

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/03/2021 14:19

@Lndnmummy it's lovely!

Lndnmummy · 30/03/2021 14:19

I think in general people are decorating more on holidays due to covid. It’s a chance to escape for a while or lift spirits when times are hard. No need to judge, you never know what people carry on their shoulders. I find the reference to people decorating and being dim unnecessary and could be hurtful if I cared about strangers opinions on the internet. Wish people were slightly more tolerant perhaps in light of what is a very difficult time for many. But whatever, a sign of the times I guess, intolerance I mean.

It really is. I want one now.

Cocolapew · 30/03/2021 14:31

"touch the kittens" 😂

Asda has little white trees on a stand and they were selling like hot cakes this morning.

justasking111 · 30/03/2021 14:35

Decades ago I would blow eggs at Easter we would paint and hang from trees, good to know fashion caught upe

lazylinguist · 30/03/2021 15:01

I think people generally just enjoy holidays/festivals and fancy making their houses look pretty with a vaguely related theme, without feeling the need to stick to any rules. They don't necessarily particularly care about what it's supposed to represent, which is fair enough really. If you're an atheist and also aren't particularly interested in pagan rituals or seasonal symbolism, then Christmas and Easter are what you fancy making them really. A bit of tradition, a bit of Insta-inspired craft and decor stuff, a few of your own idiosyncratic ideas or random family traditions.

WaltzesWithSnobs · 30/03/2021 15:10

Well @lazylinguist imo before Christianity there was a festival in the winter where people would get together and have a big feast with their friends and family before the most harsh winter set in and, in those days, a lot more people would not make it to next year's feast.

Another celebration of springtime, new life, new livestock, new harvest. So when people say you can't have an Easter egg if you're not a Christian I would question how the story of the Resurrection correlates to shaped chocolate treats. Or bunnies/lambs/chicks for that matter.

Lockdown is so bloody boring if someone is made happier by an Easter tree then good for them.

Whilst I personally find them ridiculous I also don't blame people for trying to entertain themselves just now.

Londonmummy66 · 30/03/2021 15:20

Just googled it - why are they all topped with a decapitated easter bunny? Does that mean the bunny is dead so won't be hiding eggs? Sad

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 30/03/2021 15:26

So when people say you can't have an Easter egg if you're not a Christian

I have literally never heard a single person say this. Not even on MN.

May be because in many countries bunny doesn't bring eggs. But baby bunnies are a spring thing. We always had young ones around easter.

If you want to be shocked, I highly recommend reading about Easter Monday and how someone obtain easter eggs in Slovakia and Czech on that day😂😂😂

Cocolapew · 30/03/2021 16:10

The chicks are up with the tupils and not forgetting the unicorn eggs 😊

Yours looks lovely. Ours looks like it's been mauled by a cat. Probably because it has been mauled by a cat. He won't leave the bloody feathers alone.
MummyJ12 · 30/03/2021 16:39

We have an Easter tree. I put it up on Sunday for Holy Week, the kids love it. It’s not the Christmas tree though!
I don’t think it’s a case of not honouring the Christian faith or being ignorant of traditions. It’s a bit of fun. We do Easter activities with a Messy Church bag that we have delivered and my kids go to C of E faith schools so we absolutely know the story of Easter.

@SchrodingersImmigrant this made me laugh so much!

I assume you know what golden rain/golden showers means in English? (Don't Google if you don't!!)

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/03/2021 17:13

@LostInTime yup. That's why I quickly learned the name used here for that one😂

@littlepattilou you seem to be confusing your ignorance of someone else's culture with... something else.

Lndnmummy · 30/03/2021 17:44

@Cocolapew we have the unicorn eggs too! My ds loves them.
