Hi Mumsnetters

Posted this on DIY too but no response!

What paints do you recommend for a whole house? Walls, ceilings, etc.

Dulux, Leylands, Farrow & Ball...?

Thank you!

Well that really depends on budget...

Snowstorming · 20/03/2021 16:04

Ideally, the cheaper the better as budget isn’t huge. I don’t know if it makes a difference but the main colours we need are

Light grey and White (not decided shade yet, hence looking for brands)

We have 2 living rooms and 2 large bedrooms to paint, but also the hallways/extra nooks and fannies.

I'm sure the MC of MN would say F&B or something else that probably £1000 a litre but I've used Dulux for years, covers well, a reasonable choice of colours and fairly cheap. I found Crown and layland are ok too but I avoid valspar and own brands now after some poor results.

lidoshuffle · 20/03/2021 16:18

I like Little Green, as they do a lovely range of soft colours and it's great quality. But if it's just white and grey you want, I'd go for Johnson's Trade.

Snowstorming · 20/03/2021 16:21

Lol @VeganVeal £1000 a litre! My safe bet is definitely Dulux because it’s built it’s name in the painting world but I’ve also heard that Leyland is a good alternative. And yes not brave enough to try own brands yet!

Thank you @lidoshuffle

Johnstones acrylic durable matt or egg shell. Use it for everything. White stays white on woodwork. Incredibly durable on walls and wipes. Iv used it through the entire house

nonevernotever · 20/03/2021 16:23

My painter always recommended Crown or dulux to me.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/03/2021 16:26

Johnston's is good, we've colour matched a few F&B.

Twinkie01 · 20/03/2021 16:29

Little Green or get F&B colour matched for Johnson's paint.

F&B is shit. We're having our hall colour matched and repainted as the F&B paint shows every little mark, it's an absolute nightmare, you can't wipe any scuffs off it just marks more.

nancy75 · 20/03/2021 16:29

If you’re just having white (plain white) on walls buy deluxe trade

Don’t buy any kind of Homebase/ Wilco’s anything like that home brand it’s rubbish

My decorator dad does not rate farrow & ball - says horrible paint waste of money.

If you have one nearby go to a trade store rather than a Homebase

IpreferInchyraBlue · 20/03/2021 16:30

F & B or Johnson's - I prefer Johnson's for woodwork but F&B modern emulsion on walls.

nancy75 · 20/03/2021 16:30
  • Dulux not deluxe!
ItsSnowJokes · 20/03/2021 16:32

Dulux Easycare has been brilliant for us. I have tried the valspar v700 (complete crap and a poor finish for the price), crown and other cheap ones. Go for Dulux and it will be a great finish.

Cheesecakeandwine · 20/03/2021 16:32

Johnston’s acrylic eggshell here matched to many f&b colours........far better/long lasting paint

GreenGarden22 · 20/03/2021 16:33

Little Greene is fab

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 20/03/2021 16:34

How many fannies are you planning on painting?

ChequerBoard · 20/03/2021 16:35

We always use Dulux, but buy the trade formula that is colour mixed to order as a Dulux Decorator's Centre shop.

https://www.duluxdecoratorcentre.co.uk/advice/traderetailpaint

You can get whatever colour you want mixed up - just take a swatch with you and they will colour match.

Costs a little more, but you use less and the quality of the finish is much better than with retail paints.

yumscrumfatbum · 20/03/2021 16:36

Dulux everytime

Liddelingland · 20/03/2021 16:39

My decorators prefer Dulux Trade, so that's what we get. I like their Diamond Matt paint for the walls because it's wipeable.

UrAWizHarry · 20/03/2021 16:40

Dulux is fine. Have always regretted going for cheaper brands/Crown etc.

jetadore · 20/03/2021 16:55

DH swears by Dulux ‘Trade’ from Brewers or decorator centre (not b&q etc), thinned down with about 10% water.

I've used Wickes own brand tough and washable as we have a dog and he gets the walls a bit grubby. I've done several rooms and it goes on beautiful, not drippy at all. I've tested the cleanability of it as my husband has splashed food up it in the kitchen. Cleans up perfect. I'm doing my whole house in it in a very soft grey. I won't be using anything else. Can get big tins in some of the colours too.

FuzzyPuffling · 20/03/2021 17:07

Little Greene. I won't use anything else now it is so good.

Okbye · 20/03/2021 17:08

Colour match service from www.decoratingcentreonline.co.uk/

They colour match any brands colour perfectly. I’ve had several F&B colour matches from them and would absolutely recommend 👍 Had all mine in the ‘soft sheen’ finish which covers beautifully 😊

nancy75 · 20/03/2021 17:10

If you’ve got a brewers nearby (not sure if they are everywhere) they also do their own make called Albany which is good
