Hi Mumsnetters

Posted this on DIY too but no response!

What paints do you recommend for a whole house? Walls, ceilings, etc.

Dulux, Leylands, Farrow & Ball...?

Thank you!

Dulux every time. Had bad experiences the one time I used Valspar - coverage much worse.

gretagreengrapes · 20/03/2021 18:13

Dulux emulsion and satinwood but the "trade" versions of them available at B&Q or the decorating centre. It was definitely more pigmented than the regular one we tried first and therefore needed less paint overall

Murraysmum · 20/03/2021 18:16

Valspar V700 is fantastic. You can literally scrub it with a kitchen sponge if you get it badly marked. Excellent for high traffic areas. They have a huge colour range but if there is a specific colour you want just take a sample in and they will match to it.

Lonelycrab · 20/03/2021 18:20

Johnston’s is good but try and get the trade type. Abit more expensive but worth it Imo.

AlCalavicci · 20/03/2021 18:23

I am in the process of repainting all my wood work and am using Leyland, white gloss. it goes on well with a roller or brush .
just be aware it is oil based so you will need turps and it smells quite strong.

I need to do my walls and ceilings, how are people picking the colours they want when they can not go to the shop ? I know you can see them on line but the colour differs between the display on my phone and on my laptop

nancy75 · 20/03/2021 18:39

@AlCalavicci paint shops & diy places are open - decorators are still working

Rodders92 · 20/03/2021 18:42

@Snowstorming

Ideally, the cheaper the better as budget isn’t huge. I don’t know if it makes a difference but the main colours we need are

Light grey and White (not decided shade yet, hence looking for brands)

We have 2 living rooms and 2 large bedrooms to paint, but also the hallways/extra nooks and fannies.

Why are you painting your fanny🤣🤣
AlCalavicci · 20/03/2021 18:45

@nancy75, my local B&Q were advertising click and collect last week , I took it to mean only click and collect ( thought it was a bit odd )
Thanks

AlCalavicci · 20/03/2021 18:49

@Rodders92 & @Snowstorming well some people bleach their bum holes ( so I have been told ) so why not paint your fanney , I think a nice pale blue or extravagant gold would look ummm interesting Grin Grin

1starwars2 · 20/03/2021 18:58

We always buy Dulux, although I have used bnq/wickes own brand. Dulux is nice and thick with good coverage.
Farrow and Ball is pretentious (imo).

Elletine · 20/03/2021 19:51

Dulux polished pebble is a nice soft grey, we have it upstairs
For more £, little greene is the best I’ve ever found!

MoorGirl · 20/03/2021 19:52

We just used Crown Easyclean, great to apply and excellent finish. Good price too.

Snowstorming · 20/03/2021 20:48

Oh god, I am not painting any fannies Blush Sorry! Almost choked on my tea when I saw the messages, ha!!

Thank you SO much for the fantastic recommendations and explanations so far. Very very helpful. And @Elletine I did see the Polished Pebble colour online, I thought it looked about right! One or two others as well, I think Grey Goose or something. Or maybe I’m confused again Grin

Please keep the suggestions coming! I didn’t know about the Trade paint options before so that’s something I’m definitely going to look into Smile

I ordered a dulux trade paint online, it's called durable flat matt, it's got brilliant coverage and I wish I'd done all the other rooms in it, such an easy paint to use.

PurpleFlower1983 · 20/03/2021 20:54

Dulux - It’s cheap in Wilko!

ElderMillennial · 20/03/2021 20:54

We had Dulux in our old house and it went on really well and looked great. Reasonably priced too.

We are decorating now and we have Valspar in some rooms which is good and they can mix any colour you want. It's cheaper than F&B but more expensive than Dulux.

We are now picking paints for downstairs and I have some Dulux and F&B samples

1Morewineplease · 20/03/2021 20:56

We had a lot of painting done a couple of years ago. We invited trade to do the work as part of the painting involved a very tall landing . Every single trade person asked whether we wanted F&B paint as they didn't want to paint with it. I understand that their formulation had changed and didn't give the best coverage.
We opted for Laura Ashley which they were all happy with . Probably no longer available now.
Crown was often mentioned.

Homehaircuts · 20/03/2021 21:06

I love farrow and ball for choice of colour but it it is pricey. For wood work I like Leyland (but make sure it's trade) water based undercoat and water based satin in you paint wood white it goes on nice and stays white. I hate using gloss now as it always goes yellow eventually.

Rodders92 · 20/03/2021 21:10

I had come on to give a sensible reply but got sidetracked. Dulux is fine and I also like Johnstones, of the more premium paints I prefer little greene to F&B. The nicest paint I’vetried is Benjamin Moore but that is expensive

cardibach · 20/03/2021 21:11

Valdosta and B&Qs Home (something?) range have gone on well with my current renovation project. A range of colours used. Coverage excellent.

cardibach · 20/03/2021 21:12

Valspar. It’s what 8 typed. Why does my iPad want to decide for me?

GabriellaMontez · 20/03/2021 21:17

I'm very happy with Wilkinsons white matt.

They had an offer on the dulux colours last week. Also good. Definitely needed thinning.

WildCherryBlossom · 21/03/2021 07:29

We use Dulux pure brilliant white on the ceilings, Johnston's trade on woodwork (skirts, bannisters, window frames, doors etc) and F&B modern emulsion on walls. The only woodwork not painted with Johnston's is the kitchen units. They are F&B and take a regular scrubbing after spilllsges etc

I frequently have to wipe my walls clean thanks to my mucky kids (eg one of my DDs did some Jackson Pollock style artwork and flicked paint all over the kitchen walls last week 🙄) and modern emulsion is great for that. It just wipes clean.

I would also recommend F&B bathroom paint. We initially used it in our bathroom but I wasn't that keen on the colour I chose so after a few years we repainted using white Dulux bathroom paint. Within a year it started blistering all over the place and looking really shabby. The F&B before that had lasted about 6 years.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 21/03/2021 08:19

Farrow and ball without a doubt. Pricey but you get what you pay for. It covers very well so you can get away with one coat.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 21/03/2021 08:22

Sorry to drip feed.

I hate crown paint with a passion, cheap but once I used some (darker over light) and it took 3 coats. Could have done with a fourth. But at that point I was ready to cry at the end result and didn't care anymore.

Dulux isn't as good as it was, I think they have thinned the product a touch too.
