Hi Mumsnetters

Posted this on DIY too but no response!

What paints do you recommend for a whole house? Walls, ceilings, etc.

Dulux, Leylands, Farrow & Ball...?

Thank you!

Dulux trade every time. We have always gone for cheap paint. The woodwork yellowed within a year. We went for Dulux and it covers really well and I can give it a good wipe down without it coming off. Won't use anything else now.

Snowstorming · 22/03/2021 18:32

I’m leaning towards Dulux in Polished Pebble or a similar grey colour (will probably get bog standard white where needed).

Does anyone know any cheaper alternatives to Dulux in similar greys?

Has anyone tried Johnstones Paint?

I love Wilkos paint, never ever had a problem with it.

TheCrowening · 22/03/2021 18:50

Neutral colours dulux trade.

Though I love painting with Graham&Brown paint, lovely consistency and great colours.

I used crown scrubbable in my hall stairs and landing because I knew the kids would put mucky hands on it.
I did it a year ago, they have put grubby mitts all over it constantly, and I have scrubbed it several times a week in high traffic areas by doors and light switches and it still looks good.

Hi can anyone recommend a washable matt paint that lasted? Going to paint walls white with charcoal feature wall. Dulux trade centre recommended diamond matt but online reviews not good?

ZaraW · 20/05/2021 09:02

Deluxe Trade. F&B got a really bad review from Which? a couple of years ago.

ZaraW · 20/05/2021 09:03

Dulux...

Pinkylemons · 20/05/2021 09:08

My husband is a builder so our while house is done in Dulux Diamond Matt. It’s practically indestructible and can be wiped a million times.

Pinkylemons · 20/05/2021 09:09

@Missc2001 - diamond Matt is amazing. I’ve washed my hallway walls hundreds of times. My DH is a builder and swears by it.

SunIsComing · 20/05/2021 10:30

I heard Zoffany is good.

Sidalee7 · 20/05/2021 13:17

Farrow and Ball modern emulsion.
My decorator is used to Crown/Dulux and he raved about the quality of F and B. Worth the investment in my opinion.

OrangeRug · 20/05/2021 13:28

We have used a variety of brands as we tend to choose based on the shade we want rather than brand. Dulux, Crown and Johnstones are very good but honestly if you're on a tight budget I think Wilkos own brand is great and they have some lovely colours.

ZaraW · 20/05/2021 13:57

I've never understood the MN love for F&B. Emma Hill has a review on You Tube "We Tried F&B paint and hated it". It took five coats of paint for her spare room.

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants

How many fannies are you planning on painting?

Hi @Snowstorming there's so much choice it can be a bit overwhelming. I'm not sure that this will help in that regard but Homebase or a Dulux Decorator Centre will colour match any colour you find from any manufacturer in a Dulux paint. The best bet is to buy a sample then paint two coats on to an A4 sheet of paper, then get them to scan it rather than just using their colour match code, it's much more accurate.

My personal recommendations are...if you want a grey that goes with everything then I'd get them to match F&B Cornforth White (it's a light grey not white!)

Or for a good white paint I've used a lot of Dulux Trade SuperMatt white (not the brilliant white just plain white). Coverage is really good and it's a plain white not brilliant it looks soft.

Missc2001 · 20/05/2021 14:36

@Pinkylemons thank you. Will give it a go.

dontcallmelen · 20/05/2021 14:40

Johnson’s/Albany/Graham & Brown, I used diamond Matt in my kitchen & lasted well, premium brands Little Greene & Mylands both much much better coverage than F&B good depth of colour and easy to work with Yy Benjamin Moore the colour choice is amazing but it’s expensive also Tikkurila also another brand that get excellent reviews but haven’t personally used it.

DappledThings · 20/05/2021 14:40

I've used plenty of different brands. Currently have up Homebase, Crown, Dulux and Johnsons. I like lots of colour so I've only ever chosen by colour whatever brand that happens to be. Not really noticed any difference in quality between them.

Tal45 · 20/05/2021 14:43

Dulux Timeless white is gorgeous. Doing my whole house with it!

Bluesheep8 · 20/05/2021 14:55

We have 2 living rooms and 2 large bedrooms to paint, but also the hallways/extra nooks and fannies.

Grin hilarious

NotMeNoNo · 20/05/2021 15:09

Trade supplier, Dulux Trade or Johnstones/Leyland/Albany (trade brands).
Thin paint or DIY store brands will have you weeping.
Little Greene etc have some nice colours but it will add up to a lot for an entire house.

Streamside · 20/05/2021 15:15

During lockdown I've decorated a hall, living room and 4 bedrooms. I found a huge difference in the quality of the white paints I used for ceilings. The Dulux matt range was so superior to Crown. One room hadn't been decorated in ten years and the ceiling was still patchy after 3 coats of crown white emulsion.
I've been pleasantly surprised at the Crown flat emulsion range, it's cheaper than Farrow and ball and was easier to use.I think it used to be known as their heritage range.

Hi I recently got some dulux vinyl matt and I found that worked perfectly paintersworld.co.uk/dulux-trade-vinyl-matt-white
