A friend and I were talking and I said about a man we work with being good looking. She said oh he would be if his teeth were straight. Aibu to think people are still be good looking with teeth that aren’t straight

I have horrible teeth due to a combination of being a thumb sucker and a genuine dentist phobia. I never smile in photos. I know I am attractive until I open my mouth and it has been commented on by twats I have gone on dates with.

QueenPaw · 19/03/2021 15:30

These are mine which I hate
They won't whiten any further, never had braces as dentist said not needed

Generally I find crooked teeth adorable

NoseOfJericho · 19/03/2021 15:42

Clean teeth matter. I watch old TV programmes and think how nice it is to see natural teeth, unlike the glow in the dark ones people aspire to these days.

QueenPaw, your teeth are fine, wish they were mine.

Well evolutionarily it makes sense to prefer someone with straight teeth (if they are natural, not aided by dentistry) because it means their jaw is wide enough to fit all their teeth in.

Which in turn is more likely to mean they were breastfed and ate a relatively healthy diet as a child (in terms of both micronutrients, and resistant chewy foods such as raw veg that develop your jaw).

Diesse · 19/03/2021 16:04

A quirk of tooth is OK, but a mouthful of all-over-the-shop is not a good look.

In evolutionary terms if you weren't able to be breastfed on the 'savannah plains' you died. So if it really were a good idea in terms of evolution not to shag people with crooked teeth they wouldn't exist by now.

Breastfeeding has nothing to do with what solids you eat once weaned.

Chewing and jaw strength does not dictate how well your teeth fit in your mouth.

I hate evolutionary psychology anyway but that theory is not even supported with fact (unless I'm wrong and you care to provide it).

My dh has lovely teeth and that is one of the reasons I was attracted to him
I don’t mind slightly crooked teeth, but I cannot bear teeth with visible plaque
I have always hated my teeth and paid a small fortune to get them fixed. It was my 40th birthday present from my dh

Dd1’s teeth were crooked and she begged for braces . She wasn’t entitled to get these braces under the NHS because it was deemed unnecessarily)I had to pay over £3k for braces for her ( monthly payment plan)
Cosmetic dental treatment is prohibitively expensive

Garlia · 19/03/2021 16:26

I look much better after braces fixed my crooked teeth.

partyatthepalace · 19/03/2021 16:26

No, but neither is she.

Lampzade · 19/03/2021 16:26

@QueenPaw your teeth are lovely

CounsellorTroi · 19/03/2021 16:43

I had sticky out teeth as a child. Had a brace in my teens, but before that had to have four teeth out to make room for it. The top teeth they took out were the ones next to my front teeth. My teeth don't stick out any more but due to age related gum shrinkage the two front teeth look huge compared to the ones next to them. I'm a bit self conscious about it but not enough to get something done.

CounsellorTroi · 19/03/2021 16:44

I'd love teeth like yours.
BackforGood · 19/03/2021 16:59

Not even sure what you are saying is supposed to be bad about yours, QueenPaw

marigoldflower · 19/03/2021 17:08

Bumwart21 your teeth and smile are great!

QueenPaw your teeth are very aligned, you surely don't need braces at all!

QueenPaw · 19/03/2021 17:08

@BackforGood my two lower middle teeth are set back and so the ones on either side cross over. Left front one is bigger and right front one is crooked (on an angle)
I also think they're yellow and won't go any whiter despite having zoom on them
I see loads of people with lovely straight white teeth and I'm paranoid about mine. Guess it's the part of my body I hate the most

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 19/03/2021 17:27

One of my girlfriends looked like Lara Stone, same gap in between her teeth. I nearly passed out when she smiled. Definitely an OMG moment.
Wife to be has rather large lateral incisors, like a vampire, again I find her teeth very attractive.
Might have a touch of odontophilia, I find teeth a very specific point of attraction.

Coulddowithanap · 19/03/2021 17:46

As long as they are clean, don't care if they aren't straight.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 19/03/2021 18:04

I think it is very subjective. Just yesterday, I was trying to find a makeup artist on YT. Couldn't remember her name. Eventually found her and immediately realised why I stopped watching her - her teeth. I realise this makes me sound incredibly shallow, but I can't focus on anything but her teeth. She seems lovely and I'm sure in real life it wouldn't be an issue, but when I'm looking at a video it is.

They won't whiten any further because most teeth are simply not actually white. Nor are they actually absolutely 100% straight and same size. Nothing wrong with your teeth. Unless of course you are comparing them to veneers. Then any teeth look uneven and yellow.
But that's like comparing normal mail and acrylic. Nothing in common basically

NotSure94 · 19/03/2021 19:02

Agree with many posters. Christ I'd take my dp with his foxy cute wonky smile over anyobe with a mouthful of symmetrical glowing veneers. Agree also cleanliness the main thing.

2020iscancelled · 19/03/2021 20:01

Well I have crooked teeth, not the top so much but bottom set.

I’ve had plenty of men and attention. Never been without Grin

I’d like braces, I am def of the generation where it wasn’t so much of a big deal. I wish I’d done it when I was a teenager but hey ho.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable for some people to find crooked teeth unattractive - it’s unreasonable to presume that someone IS unattractive though. Attraction is highly subjective

StepOutOfLine · 20/03/2021 09:45
@ReggaetonLente- Out of interest, which country prizes crooked teeth? Italy?
When I asked my Italian students what stereotypical (or not) ideas people have about various nations "wonky teeth" is only ever mentioned for Brits.

Oblomov21 · 20/03/2021 09:51

We are talking about different things. Crooked teeth are not attractive and look better after a brace. Veneers are often done badly. I don't think I've seen a good set yet.

HavelockVetinari · 20/03/2021 09:58

Depends on the person, but generally straight, even teeth are more attractive than crooked or stained ones.

I know a pair of identical twins who both had braces, but one of them lost his retainer so has crooked teeth. The difference that one thing makes to their appearance is massive, way more than I'd expect from just teeth - one is far better looking just because of his straight teeth. Before meeting them I'd have said teeth aren't that important, now I think they really do make a difference (which is a shame, as orthodontia is really expensive!).

If you have a teenager who doesn't want a brace, do everything you can to make them do it, because it's free pre-19 but £000s once they reach adulthood.
