Apple Watch costs a fortune. Worth it ?

I used to be a fitness freak, but since lockdown this past year I’m a couch potato. I really want to get the Apple Watch but it’s SO expensive. If anyone has one is it worth it? I had a Fitbit and loved it, kept checking every few hours to make sure I was on track, it’s somewhere in this house but very old and probably lost the charger...

I love mine, have had a 4 series for nearly 3 years and wouldn’t be without it! I bought it directly from Apple on interest free credit so paid for it over a year.

JackieWeaverFever · 17/03/2021 22:29

Mine is in a drawer I prefer my Xio mi which was £30 on Amazon

Mango101 · 17/03/2021 22:29

I've just bought a Series 6.
Amazing :)
Now 'always on' display and has it's own sim.
You can leave your phone at home !

JackieWeaverFever · 17/03/2021 22:29

Xiaomi even...

mineofuselessinformation · 17/03/2021 22:31

I have a series 3, bought refurbished at Christmas for me.
It does the job.
I try to ' close my rings' every day, and it reminds me to do it.
Anything beyond that must be better!

Sparklynewname · 17/03/2021 22:33

I have one and actually don’t use it to it’s full potential. DH has one and uses it lots.
I loved my little Fitbit one. Would replace my Apple Watch with a footstep tracker that measures heart rate once this one breaks. Disclaimer- I’m a nurse so bare below the elbow at work- it has to fit on my ankle!

shouldistop · 17/03/2021 22:35

I have a garmin, it's great

ladygoingGaga · 17/03/2021 22:36

Wouldn’t be without mine now Blush
Helps me be discreetly check messages coming in, makes me move more, also have the sim in it, so can run and go for a walk with just the watch, quite liberating

Bouncebacker · 17/03/2021 22:37

I got a series 3 for Christmas- about £200 which isn’t much more than the broken fit bit it was replacing. I like it - fit bit was too fiddly for me and I ended up using Strava as well on my phone so Apple Watch is much easier

FizzyPink · 17/03/2021 22:40

I think if you also have an iPhone it’s worth it. I like to easily see my notifications without picking up my phone, especially in meetings.

I walk a lot listening to audio books and I love that I can control it from my watch without taking out my phone. Then if someone calls me I can answer on my watch and straightaway hear the call through my headphones.

DP is a sports coach and he uses his to do things like set timers while he’s working.

I also like the step tracker/calorie counter and that it vibrates slightly with every km I walk. Although I was once very nervous in an important meeting and it notified me that my heart way was too high Blush
I’ve never had anything else to compare it to and I got mine through Vitality so only paid for it when I didn’t exercise enough but it’s been so worth it.

HarrietOh · 17/03/2021 22:43

Do they track your heart rate the same as Fitbit? Can you start an exercise on it when you’re working out so it tracks your heart rate properly during it?

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2021 22:48

I love mine. I was adamant I hated them, would never own one and couldn’t see the point but I wanted a fitness tracker and as I am visually impaired the fit it’s etc aren’t as accessible as I’d like.

So my DP bought me a series6 for Christmas and I have never looked back.

I use it predominantly for fitness, I compete against my DP and my mum and I consistently beat them and remind them (lightheartedly) that they are being beaten by someone in heart failure. Grin Also for notifications etc. Admittedly I don’t use it as a watch because I use it with voiceover and it talking the time would irritate me, so I do wear a tactile analogue watch on my left hand

But still i wouldn’t be without my watch now.

StopGuacAndRoll · 17/03/2021 22:51

Absolutely.

I love closing my rings. I am more active now than ever.

Khtchkn · 17/03/2021 22:54

Oh wow.. seems like everyone loves the watch!

I have a series 3 which was the cheapest at the time. Is great and a massive improvement on the cheaper fit bits which I had 3 of and all died within a few months.
It feels robust and I suspect/hope I’ll have it for quite some time

SuperSange · 17/03/2021 23:02

I've been thinking about buying one; is the series 3 still ok, or getting to nearly obsolete? I'd like it to track heart rate and stuff during a workout.

Hadjab · 17/03/2021 23:05

I have a Series 6 and it’s great. Always said I wasn’t going to buy one, but when Apple Fitness+ launched, it made sense to get it. It genuinely gets me moving, because I’m a lazy bum!

Frazzled2207 · 17/03/2021 23:05

I love my s3 but not tried the better ones and not sure what they do. S3 was a HUGE improvement on my fit bit.

Frazzled2207 · 17/03/2021 23:08

@Khtchkn

Oh wow.. seems like everyone loves the watch!
Have to say I resisted for years- most of my family have them and I thought they seemed unnecessary and ridiculous. However when my 3rd fit bit died I did some research as to alter ones and kicked myself as to why I’d stuck with fitbit for so long. In a different league IMO though friends tell me the super fancy fitbits are great if you are an Android person.
HotelCaliforniaOnRepeat · 17/03/2021 23:12

Another one that loves it. I like easy access to notifications as I don't tend to have my phone to hand at work. Also that you can wear it to swim, although the idea me makes me nervous 😬 as that's is my favourite activity in normal times.
I got mine pay per month from o2 and sim so that it works independently of the phone. Only downsides for me are not being able to initiate what's app, but you can reply to one that pops up; and it will mean a white stripe all summer where it blocks the sun!

RozHuntleysStump · 17/03/2021 23:25

Yeah I have a series 5 upgraded from series 1. I love it. I’d be lost with out it. I use it all the time for exercise, phone calls, timers, messages. And paying for stuff!

Cloudyrainsham · 18/03/2021 00:19

I have a Samsung Active 2. I like it because I don’t need my phone with me when out walking nor does it need a SIM card.

Spanglybangles · 18/03/2021 00:57

I have a series 6 and love it, after saying I’d never get one. It’s ace, notifications, calls, dictating text and WhatsApp replies on the move, the hr monitor, the o2 sats monitor, trying to close your rings every day etc etc. I bought it after my Fitbit went wonky just after the warranty ran out. Definitely worth the spend, my thinking being buying the latest one would mean not requiring to update for a few years.

Bluenightowl · 18/03/2021 02:09

I didn’t vote as don’t understand what vote relates to yes or no. I love mine. I previously had a fitbit and never bothered with it. The Apple Watch is full of features, including messages. I got it as a gift and wasn’t interested in it to the extent I left it in its box for about a month. Took it out one day and started playing with it and now love it!

HouseOfRunners · 18/03/2021 06:54

Depends what you are using it for. They aren’t the best for running and rate quite poorly in that area for inaccuracies. From a day to day tech point of view (messages, payments etc) they are great.
