Apple Watch costs a fortune. Worth it ?

I used to be a fitness freak, but since lockdown this past year I’m a couch potato. I really want to get the Apple Watch but it’s SO expensive. If anyone has one is it worth it? I had a Fitbit and loved it, kept checking every few hours to make sure I was on track, it’s somewhere in this house but very old and probably lost the charger...

For proper fitness tracking, get a garmin.

ListenLinda · 18/03/2021 07:08

I love mine. I love how it tracks my heart rate while i’m exercising, and i can check so if my heart rate isn’t ‘up’ enough I can do a bit more.
It’s a series 3, my parents bought me it for my 30th last september and it is absolutely fine.
I wanted a fitbit originally but my DM is an apple woman through and through and got me this instead. I love it, wear it most days and will defo upgrade when it no longer uploads/software updates.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 18/03/2021 07:10

Make sure you insure it. I dropped mine whilst putting it on and the screen smashed. You can't fix the screen other than to basically buy a new watch. That was a very expensive waste of £500. I have a Samsung one now which is more robust.

Jumpers268 · 18/03/2021 07:30

My sister has both and she prefers her Fitbit for exercise monitoring but she's got an iPhone so uses her watch more for messages etc. I've got a Fitbit charge 4 and I LOVE it! And I've got an android phone.

Carandi · 18/03/2021 07:34

I have a Series 3 which I bought a couple of weeks ago. Although I love the functionality I will sadly have to sell it as I have a nickel allergy and the watch case is setting it off and causing a rash. It's annoying because I'd purchased a spare strap for it too Sad.

TheChosenTwo · 18/03/2021 07:37

I bought a series 5 a couple of years back and it’s fine.
Useful and looks okay.
Does what I need it to do.
I could have just bought another Fitbit, there’s nothing I use the watch for that I couldn’t get from my phone but I don’t use it to its full potential like I know others do.
There’s some good geeky data on there if you’re that way inclined.
I like it, I’ll get another when this one dies but to me I would say it was ‘worth’ £500.

Cornishmumofone · 18/03/2021 07:38

If you're into running, cycling and/or swimming then you'd be better off with a Garmin.

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 18/03/2021 07:41

I have a Fitbit Versa 2 as I couldn't justify the cost of an Apple Watch. I love it, it's brilliant. You can get all your phone notifications on it, it has a heart rate monitor, links up to Spotify, Alexa etc

harknesswitch · 18/03/2021 08:10

I won one through work in 2016. Tbh I was never that bothered about them and would never in a million years have paid the £300 to buy one.

But I absolutely love it now. So much so my dh has bought me a new one for my birthday. The new one is cellular so I don't have to take my phone out with me now. It's brilliant

BigPaperBag · 18/03/2021 08:12

I love mine. I’ve got a series 5 and wear it everyday. So useful for counting my steps.

Pugdogmom · 18/03/2021 08:18

My daughter got one for her 18th birthday, 4 years ago.( not from us). The issue is that you have to keep upgrading them, as when she got a new I phone ,it no longer connects for her to get messages etc.
But don't listen to me, I really dislike Apple anyway.Grin

PervyMuskrat · 18/03/2021 08:25

I’m not a fan tbh. I have a series 5 and thought I would love it as an upgrade from my Fitbit Charge Hr and I don’t like it nearly so much. The battery life is crap, I don’t always get notifications and Siri occasionally chips in when I’m in meetings. I’m going back to a Fitbit when the Vitality 24m period is up and DH can have it then.

dontdisturbmenow · 18/03/2021 08:59

It doesn't do anything much cheaper watches don't,but if your an apple fan, you'd probably think it worth paying 2 to 10 times more just for the brand.

Newnamefor2021 · 18/03/2021 09:23

I just inherited my husbands series 3 as he wanted the series 6. He loves his, I like mine. It does help me stay more motivated.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/03/2021 09:26

If it’s just for fitness, Garmins are sadly more accurate. If it’s for everything, I love my Apple Watch. If you don’t need the top of the range one, it’s cheaper and still great.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 18/03/2021 09:33

I had a Fitbit which I really loved as I could wear it for swimming, but it broke after 18 months. It was about £200.

I now have a much daintier Huawei and whilst it's taken me a while to get used to it, it's really great. I don't want messages or calls, or paying for stuff on it, I just want fitness. It was about £40 or thereabouts.

do you know what the main differences are? Am intrigued as have a s3.
TheOneWithTheBigNose · 18/03/2021 09:36

I have a Fitbit and an Apple Watch. I prefer the Fitbit.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 18/03/2021 09:39

I’ve got a red series 6 and I love it, the seemless interconnectivity with my air pods phone is great

As an asthmatic being able to check my oxygen sats is very reassuring and having checked against an oximeter they seem reliable

Likewise the ecg facility, I suffer from palpitations linked to a health condition and it’s reassuring (as a retired nurse) to be able to look at sometimes

At the moment after shielding for a year, it takes effort to keep moving due to disability but god I admit that I have to close those rings and see my kcal burn daily

The sleep app provides far more data than my previous Fitbit and amazingly I’m actually sleeping better than most of my age group but I’m told by the watch that ONLY happens when I burn over a certain level of kcals a day

I admit I’m a health geek but my data informs and shapes my behaviour and has positively influenced my health choices over the last year

I also love the ability for my teen kids to interact even if I’m doing something and my ring doorbell lets me know when someone is approaching the door which is helpful

swampytiggaa · 18/03/2021 09:46

@Tomnooktoldmeto I have the red series six too! I’ve previously had a series 2 and 4 both secondhand but I wanted to go back to the larger size again so the husband bought me a new one with his bonus 💕

I’ve just upgraded my phone to a red one too 😂😂

I love how it connects with Strava and I like the monthly challenges. It’s handy to be able to pick up messages and calls through it and to use it to control music etc. Reminders and appointments pop up on it which is handy and I absolutely love Apple Pay.

AdobeWanKenobi · 18/03/2021 09:51

I wouldn’t buy the series three now (the one I have). It’s old technology now and doesn’t have half the features the newer versions do including range of faces. It’s also quite small storage so you can’t get as many apps on there.

I love it don’t get me wrong, but I wished I’d spent that little bit more on a newer version.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 18/03/2021 10:03

Swampytiggaa I used to have a series 4 that I gave to DS 17 and I have a red XR phone too, would love them to do red AirPods (hope they’re listening 😉)

VooveyClickwot · 18/03/2021 11:04

It depends what you want it for.

Just to track HR, steps, stairs climbed, see notifications and use Apple Pay, even basic fitness tracking such as if you just want to see your run pace then they are absolutely worth it, especially the SIM ones as you leave your phone at home and still listen to music, make calls, texts etc.

BUT, I stopped using mine when I started training and properly using my watch to do interval sets.

Now have an even more expensive Garmin that I much prefer.

Newnamefor2021 · 21/03/2021 21:16

@Frazzled2207 not much really from what I can tell. Pulse oxygenation and blood pressure. It has extra sensors, apparently something about if you call down it can all an ambulance for you if you don't respond. A compass 😆 it tells you how long you have washed your hands for 😆

No idea why he wanted a new one. I'll ask him when he's around and find out. I personally don't see why it needed upgraded.

Newnamefor2021 · 21/03/2021 21:20

Lol my husband bought the red 6 too, along with the red 11 iPhone and now tells me that they are coming out with new AirPod pros (I only bought the pros for him in Oct) and the new ones are red (and other colours). He's not getting them 😆
