Someone that is controversial in the media or comes across unpleasant on TV or whatever?

What were they like in real life?

AIBU to think there might be some surprises and some of them will be a persona on TV or whatever?

@AndeanMountainCat

Grotbags!

My brother and I (aged 10/11) were loitering in a corridor at Central studios in Brum. We were there to sit in the audience of some kids’ show that my dad was working on.

She was in her civvies but instantly recognisable, and came bustling by and gave us a friendly nod hello. Made our day!

Finally, a proper villain!

I'm disappointed nobody has mentioned Michael Winner, wasn't he the ultimate celeb villain?

Collidascope · 15/03/2021 16:37

One of my relatives is an accountant. Lindsay Hoyle (the speaker) used his services a long time ago and paid with a cheque which then bounced. They never did get the money he owed. Also cheated on his wife, which I think is fairly well known in Chorley.

For anyone Irish - Ryan Tubridy was absolutely lovely and funny.

As was Ray Darcy which surprised me!

There’s a lovely story on MN from somebody who worked with Michael Winner on a charity fundraiser.

He came across as an absolute gem of a man, and it really changed my view of him.

Does anyone remember the details? I’m sure it’s been shared on here a few times by a stalwart MNer, but I can’t remember who.

Thischarmlessgirl · 15/03/2021 17:13

David Jason lives locally to me and is apparently very shy. I’m a huge fan of Rowan Atkinson’s work but wouldn’t want to meet him as apparently he’s notoriously rude.

I'm not Irish, but I remember him from when he took over Graham Norton's show on Radio 2 for a number of weeks whilst Graham was having a break or working elsewhere. He was a fantastic presenter - so naturally funny, kindly and very engaging - I wouldn't have expected him to be any different in real life, hardly believe he'd be capable of it if he wanted to!

Lots of Irish people would disagree🤣

Paul Dacre was a client of mine. His wife is lovely.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/03/2021 17:17

Michael Winner seemed to me to be the exact opposite to a lot of the celebs mentioned in this thread - charming to the general public but often cantankerous when dealing with fellow luminaries!

ShatnersWig · 15/03/2021 17:18

Gordon Ramsay - charming, very friendly
Michael Winner - ditto, and extremely generous to a charity I was working for both in terms of money and his time

Sue Perkins, Jenni Eclair and Nigel Havers - cunts, all three of them

The plot thickens!!!

ShatnersWig · 15/03/2021 17:21

LunaNorth that was me! I can only speak as I find and I'm always aware others may see other sides but Michael Winner was a total gent as far as I was concerned.

I’m sure it was you who told the story @ShatnersWig!

It’s really heartwarming.

LunaNorth · 15/03/2021 17:23

X-post!

TaraR2020 · 15/03/2021 17:31

Lucy Worsley- arrogant, dismissive and rude

I'm actually gutted at this story. She should have stayed in character and called you 'snivelling brats'! THAT would have made my day! Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/03/2021 17:39

Was Tubs seconded to the UK as a new territory and specifically warned to mend his ways, then?!?!

CthulhuInDisguise · 15/03/2021 17:42

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll don't know about rude, but Rowan Atkinson is seriously odd. He is a conspiracy theorist and (at least 10 years ago) believed that he was being monitored and his brain infiltrated. He wrote to the government about it to ask them to stop following him.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/03/2021 17:43

After seeing how Nigel Havers treated his late-wife's sons over her will and fought them through the courts, I'm not remotely surprised to hear that.

@twighlightcafe
Regarding Jimmy Savile holding onto your hand too long.
On an occasion when he met Princess Diana he took her hand to kiss it -

  • and licked it. Audacious familiarity - and creepiness........
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/03/2021 17:45

CthulhuInDisguise - I think that was meant for Thischarmlessgirl ?!

Even so, you'd think he wouldn't want to alert them to the fact that he's rumbled them, wouldn't you?!

MotherOfGremlins · 15/03/2021 17:48

@Becca19962014 I'm sorry for your loss Thanks

For a while, Savile was considered a very close friend of theirs (well, Charles, at least) and was even sought after by them (or their people) for marriage advice for the couple Shock

He also spent Christmas Day with Margaret and Denis Thatcher at their home for a decade or so, which is....odd indeed.

@draughtycatflap

Theresa May tarmacked my drive and tried to overcharge me. I wasn’t having that. I shook my fist and the last I saw she was running off through a field of corn.
I saw her as she was scurrying off, catflap.

She filled her pockets with field mice and stole a scarecrow!

Typical Tory!
