Someone that is controversial in the media or comes across unpleasant on TV or whatever?

What were they like in real life?

AIBU to think there might be some surprises and some of them will be a persona on TV or whatever?

I’m a bit suspicious of all the MM stories too.

OutComeTheWolves · 14/03/2021 20:43

@PizzaAndCake

I used to work at a well known charity and let me tell you, some celebs can be horribly rude. I won't say the name but we had a TV actor who made awful comments about a disabled child during an event.

It pains me to say this but Piers Morgan was actually really lovely the handful of times I've met him.

Sophie (Wessex) and Kate were also very friendly the times I've met them

When I was a waitress in London, I waited on a table with Sophie Wessex on it and she seemed lovely. She was polite to me which always think how someone treats someone who has to wait on them is a good mark of their character. And every time I came to the table she was talking about her kids - I got the impression that she is a very proud mum.

The Yorkshire ripper used to deliver stuff to my dads works all while he was very active
He used to chat to the staff while doing his delivery and even commented things like I hope they catch him when they talked about the ripper
My dad said he couldn’t warm to him and there was something not right about him but couldn’t put his finger on what it was,
Little did my dad know!

Cbeebiesischeesy · 14/03/2021 21:11

I worked for a family (lovely people) and Holly W would often come round, this was a few years ago. She was awful. Very very confident, but not in a good way, quite bolshy and gossipy. She gave me the impression of being the mean girl at school.
I still find it odd it I see her on tv as she comes across as so lovely, she really wasn’t, I was so disappointed.

Cbeebiesischeesy · 14/03/2021 21:12

*If I see her

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/03/2021 21:18

He was beautifully dressed, so polite and smelt oddly lovely.

I love Chris Eubanks style - he always looks very dapper!

Love this thread. Placemarking!

OhCaptain · 14/03/2021 21:37
@ohcaption disappointed to hear that, I have just bought her book, nooo! What makes her awful?
Laura? She’s arrogant, rude, dismissive of anyone she deems beneath her (and apparently that’s a lot of people).

Ireland isn’t all that big so when her star began to rise she still mixed with a lot of the same circle as me and you just saw her getting ruder and more obnoxious every time.

But even before then she was Mean Girl personified. Awful woman!

COPPER3 · 14/03/2021 21:51

I'm loving this thread too!

  1. Gary Glitter - Creepy bighead who tried to chat me up when i was stood at the bar with my boyfriend (I was about 22). He was extremely arrogant and obnoxious. I remember just ignoring him and wanting to move as far away from him as I could.
  2. Gordon Ramsey - A very young, just starting out GR, in the same pub as the GG episode funnily enough. He used to cook the basic pub stuff and serve. He was surly and sullen. However, when he became famous (amazes me to this day as he was nothing special), he was very generous to those that he used to know.
  3. Apparently Cilla Black was a right cow!
  4. My DH has recently done a job for Kate Moss. She was very polite and genial, but had a fag in her mouth! He thought she was pretty though.
I know the street where the Wests lived in Gloucester. It is honestly the most creepy, strangest of places. Obviously the house is no longer there, but the atmosphere is weird.
mindutopia · 14/03/2021 21:57

Dh had a run in with Rolf Harris as a child. Apparently, MIL somehow got them backstage at a show as a result of some charitable endeavour and apparently he asked dh if he wanted to come back to his dressing room and see what was in his peg leg. Hmm That's the story anyway. It's super creepy. MIL say absolutely not.

That said, dh does a lot of work for the Beckham's (not that I would ever consider them 'villains'). David is lovely and is always super hands on and trying to do all the hard graft so everyone else doesn't have to. I get that Victoria is picky and weird with food, but otherwise, both really lovely and relatively down to earth.

A good few years back my mam saw Keith Duffy near hospital as she was visiting. A fan ask him to sign something he said no. Mean

Skatastic · 14/03/2021 22:06

Me and my brother were getting autographs at the Big Breakfast house and Gary Glitter wandered over to give us his and we both put our books in our pockets and turned away.

BettyOBarley · 14/03/2021 22:07

David Jason did some filming at our workplace for Frost quite a few years ago. I'm a massive Only Fools fan and was gutted at how standoffish he was. He wanted to be kept well away from everyone. When my friend saw him leaving she asked if she could have his autograph and he just said to his driver get me out of here and jumped in his car.

Saw Jimmy Saville a few times, my mum met him once when she was about 13 and he asked her to sit on his knee 🤢. We're from Leeds and it was common knowledge for years what he was like, it was no surprise when it all came out.

Meredithgrey1 · 14/03/2021 22:20

One poster overplayed their hand by saying Meghan threw all the clothes on the floor without hanging them up

I have no idea about Meghan Markle, but generally speaking I don’t find stories of customers throwing clothes on the floor remotely unbelievable. I worked in a reasonably expensive (but not massively high end) clothing store when I was at uni and the way some of the customers behaved was really rude. Clothes were frequently left dumped all over the floor.

TatianaBis · 14/03/2021 22:22

Meghan was only here what 4 years? Yet as many posters have met her as Jimmy Savile. 😂

tellmetologoffIamaMNaddict · 14/03/2021 22:27

I was told my a colleague that Jack Straw referred to the women in our office as "totty".

Anon778833 · 14/03/2021 22:30

Yeah. Is the palace machine tracking these threads? 🤔
YouAintKingDingALing · 14/03/2021 22:33

@Mary46 what if he'd just received some bad news from a doctor or had been to visit a sick relative?

I think people forget that famous people are still people who have off days, feel rough etc and aren't 'working' 24/7.

MeribleMelon · 14/03/2021 22:38

The MM story needs more detail to be believable. Why would she randomly slag off a member of staff? What was said? All just seems a bit vague.
Although I have worked in retail and I have seen plenty of people throw things on the floor. That part I can believe

AnneElliott · 14/03/2021 22:40

Jools Holland was very unpleasant- he came into the shop where I worked and he was just desperate for people to recognise him.

Princess Anne was lovely - and completely on top of her brief.

Andy Burnham - lovely bloke, really nice to people. He got me a chair and a glass of lemonade as I was heavily pregnant and everyone else was cracking open champagne.

Theresa May - really lovely person and incredibly sharp.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 14/03/2021 22:55

Not quite the same, but many years ago I took a friend to a colleagues' party, say hello to colleagues partner (perfectly nice but slightly smarmy actor) in the lift.
Friend insists she knows him, he says politely he doesn't think so.
As the lift arrives and we walk into the party, friend announces very loudly "Ooh, you're the rapist, aren't you?" - Newsworthy soap opera part he was playing at the time.
Got the evening off to a great start.

heroku · 14/03/2021 23:09

I've spent a fair bit of time with Theresa May. She was always very pleasant to me and her staff all seemed to really like her. She can come off as very cold though and I think it's because she's actually quite shy and self-conscious. I definitely don't share her politics, and I cringed watching her suck up to incredibly rich arseholes, but I did respect how unbelievably hard she worked.

Nicknacky · 14/03/2021 23:20

@Mary46 Surely the fact he is near a hospital should be reason enough to leave him alone?

Gobbycop · 14/03/2021 23:27

Nasty Nick doesn’t count then?😁
Well just to say I’ve met him a few times through work - super polite, very softly spoken, unassuming, , generous at harvest time and shorter than me

Haha no way he was mine too.

Fitted a wing mirror to his car when I was an apprentice car mechanic.

Ages ago now but I remember him being perfectly decent.
This was a garage in South London, not sure if that's where you were?

Gobbycop · 14/03/2021 23:32

Nasty Nick from EastEnders.
