To buy a Range Rover sport with potentially three children

Posted elsewhere but added to AIBU for traffic as got no responses. I know mumsnet typically hate 4x4s and their drivers but hoping my hybrid choice softens the blow!

Changing my car shortly. Ideally want a RR Sport but whilst we only need to fit two car seats for now, baby 3 isn't totally off the cards. Would an XC90 be the more sensible option? Or has anyone got 3 seats across a RR Sport? Preference is to rear face as long as possible however eldest would be 4/5 should we have a third so potentially ready to move into a HBB. Car would be new so latest models.

Other options would be a Disco but i want hybrid and they haven't bought a hybrid model out yet. Obviously can't look in show rooms right now but need to make a decision soon!

These are the only models i like following all my research. Can’t afford the standard RR and not ready to convert to a mum wagon/bus yet! Will have the XC90 if I have to but whilst it’s a perfectly nice car I find it a bit less aesthetically pleasing/luxurious.

Can anyone tell me about successfully having a RR sport with three young children.

AIBU
YES - no way will it work get the xc90
NO - I’ve had 3 littles in a RR S and it’s fine!

@Overthinkingalways have you looked at the Seat Tarracco? I love mine, I have the Xcellence Lux model so very luxurious and all the bells and whistles. But cheap to run and the tax on mine is really low. I have a 2.0ltr petrol and I pay £13 a month on road tax which is half what I pay for my husbands Volvo.

Overthinkingalways · 12/03/2021 14:33

@cujo so a disco sport. Yes I know that model is available in hybrid. That’s no good as not big enough - same chassis as evoque. It is the large disco 4 Id like, a different model.

I’ve got the RR sport with 3 and it’s absolutely fine.
We had the Q5 before which was too small

flossletsfloss · 12/03/2021 14:37

We did a fair bit of research on this. If you want three isofix which is safest we found the best options the Audi Q7 or the Peugeot 5008. Loads of cars claim they can fit three car seats but in reality they can't fit three isofix seats! I would think three in the Range Rover sport was impossible but it depends on your car seats and how you feel about isofix. I would go for space and comfort when the kids are young.

Overthinkingalways · 12/03/2021 14:38

@LBOCS2 this made me smile! My parents always had Volvos growing up and it probably (very unfairly) skews my perception! I do need to look at them properly it’s just hard with everything closed atm.

@FuckyouBrennan yes finally someone! How old are your three and what car seats have you got if you don’t mind me asking?

@flossletsfloss. Isofix isn’t a deal breaker for me as I believe properly fitted seatbelt car seats are just as safe. Rear facing until an appropriate age and size absolutely is a deal breaker however.

RR is usually for the older mums who only have 1 kid.

Who knew? Grin

BalancedIndividual · 12/03/2021 14:48

I love cars.

I can honestly say that RR's are good vfm, and v practical.

But I would never buy one. The risk of theft is too high. It is one of the most targeted/stolen cars ever.

Volvo is more luxury than RR, and better cars. But the XC90 is a beast in terms of size. Id go for XC60

QueenPaw · 12/03/2021 14:49

I work for JLR and we are doing over the phone/video in sales so worth ringing as they're happy to measure/take pics etc and use zoom/FaceTime

Flippyferloppy · 12/03/2021 14:51

In my opinion it's totally inappropriate for 3 kids and far from ideal for 2

yomommasmomma · 12/03/2021 14:54

@NormanStangerson

RR are top cars to drive and very comfortable if you currently only have two child seats. Don’t buy new, buy approved second hand. The new Defenders are horrific and the Discos don’t offer much more in the way of practicality if you’re towing.
What a load of rubbish. The new defender is fantastic

On a point of pedantry OP, you mean a Disco 5 - the 4s ended in 2017 so you couldn't buy a new 4 of any kind.

If you have to have a Land Rover why not a new Defender? Plenty of space and available as a PHEV ?

Bumblebee1980a · 12/03/2021 15:03

I have a RR sport. Yes it has 3 seats.

I love it!

I'm sure there are more sensible options though. I think you have to love the car if you want to spend that much.

JanewaysBun · 12/03/2021 15:15

Defo get an xc90 as it is great for 3 seats

JanewaysBun · 12/03/2021 15:15

Sorry meant space for 3x RF seats. Very few other non MPVs allow that

MissSmiley · 12/03/2021 15:17

@Overthinkingalways definitely XC90, you haven't mentioned boots space, loads in the Volvo, don't know about the RR but none in the 7 seat disco, the extra seats touch the back window when up, I have 5 children 7 years apart so we had several car seats for a long time, I loved driving it too but it was thirsty

HiScore · 12/03/2021 15:23

We’ve just bought an XC90. If you get the family pack in the spec then the middle seat of the vehicle can have an inbuilt car seat. This means when your eldest reaches 4 years old, if you have another baby then you don’t need to squeeze three car seats in. We have two kids currently but got the inbuilt car seat to future proof the vehicle!

HiScore · 12/03/2021 15:29

Also if you get the R-Design model they are very plush!

Enidblyton1 · 12/03/2021 15:36

Judging by all the people in our school car park who have XC90s these days, Volvo is definitely not for boring/older drivers - OP you need to look around. A few years ago lots of these same drivers had Discovery and RR Sports. Interesting that they’ve all slowly moved to Volvo. We had an XC60 and absolutely loved it. Very luxurious. XC90 probably a better bet with 3 children.

Tesla is also becoming super popular, but the X has a horrendous record for malfunctioning. We looked into getting one and they are very expensive - thought we’d wait a few more years for some of the problems to be fixed.

It's also mega useful for giving lifts to people with children when you don't have a spare car seat, which is a situation we've been in a number of times!

ekidmxcl · 12/03/2021 15:59

I don’t really think it’s a big enough vehicle for 3 kids. I would definitely look for a mum wagon, sorry. A friend of mine (with 3 kids) resisted getting a mum wagon for a long time, eventually her dh persuaded her that it would suit their needs and she told me it was the best thing they ever bought.

Roselilly36 · 12/03/2021 16:06

DH had a RR Sport, build quality was disappointing.

ConsuelaHammock · 12/03/2021 16:07

I’d go for a Xc90 or 60 if that would be big enough. They are lovely cars and lost the old people Volvo badge years ago.

ConsuelaHammock · 12/03/2021 16:07

If I had thousands to spend on a car I’d buy a Volvo

1FootInTheRave · 12/03/2021 16:28

Personally I would avoid a rr. They are stolen all the time.

I have an x5 and it is a lovely drive and been v reliable.

I like the disco and the xc90 too. A high spec disco is lovely, but reliability issues are a problem.
