To buy a Range Rover sport with potentially three children

Posted elsewhere but added to AIBU for traffic as got no responses. I know mumsnet typically hate 4x4s and their drivers but hoping my hybrid choice softens the blow!

Changing my car shortly. Ideally want a RR Sport but whilst we only need to fit two car seats for now, baby 3 isn't totally off the cards. Would an XC90 be the more sensible option? Or has anyone got 3 seats across a RR Sport? Preference is to rear face as long as possible however eldest would be 4/5 should we have a third so potentially ready to move into a HBB. Car would be new so latest models.

Other options would be a Disco but i want hybrid and they haven't bought a hybrid model out yet. Obviously can't look in show rooms right now but need to make a decision soon!

These are the only models i like following all my research. Can’t afford the standard RR and not ready to convert to a mum wagon/bus yet! Will have the XC90 if I have to but whilst it’s a perfectly nice car I find it a bit less aesthetically pleasing/luxurious.

Can anyone tell me about successfully having a RR sport with three young children.

AIBU
YES - no way will it work get the xc90
NO - I’ve had 3 littles in a RR S and it’s fine!

but you can get a hybrid disco? they are definitely orderable...

i'd go for the x5, q7 or xc90

LR/RR just aren't that nice in comparison

orchidsonabudget · 12/03/2021 10:52

Friend of mine's RR blew up on the motorway. Literally on fire
I do think that people judge people
In RR.
I know I do

We had a 2016 RR sport 2 years ago, lovely car to drive and very spacious. But we got rid after 14 months, most unreliable car I've owned, luckily most faults were fixed under warranty, but it spent months in the garage being repaired.

givememarmite · 12/03/2021 10:59

We looked at RR when we needed a new car for 3 kids but it definitely wouldn't have worked with young kids and the bulky seats they need. I also wasn't impressed with the quality tbh, I had an SQ5 and an A4 before that and much preferred Audi quality. So we stuck with Audi and went with the Q7 which I'm very happy with. There's a hybrid version you could check out

Overthinkingalways · 12/03/2021 11:02

@cujo unfortunately hybrid discos aren't out yet - if they were that's what i'd order no question. The disco sport is, but i don't think that's any bigger than the RR sport - it's on the same chassis as an evoque.

I don't like the look of the X5 and won't have an audi again after having a couple of terrible ones (I know you can say that with any make but after being personally bitten twice I can't go back).

That leaves the XC90 which may be the one in fairness. I just don't feel mature enough to be succumbing to a sensible Volvo but looks like that may well be the better bet.

The reliability of the RR Sport is terrible and bills of UK to £20k to fix are common.

givememarmite · 12/03/2021 11:08

I think then you need to go with the XC90 and get something more fun next time (when the kids are a bit bigger you'll have more options!)

Luckystar1 · 12/03/2021 11:16

I have 3 DC, youngest is under 6 months. We had to get rid of the RR Sport, and got an Audi Q7.

The Q7 has plenty of room for us all. But I cannot wait until I can get another RR, I absolutely loved it and I feel the Audi is just not remotely comparable for drive, features etc.

But there’s no way you could fit 3 car seats in the RR, the middle back seat isn’t really a seat, it’s an armrest.

Oh we went for the Q7 as it has isofix in every seat, including the passenger and both seats in the boot. Others might not care but it was a selling point for us.

trevthecat · 12/03/2021 11:17

Have a look at the multimac car seat. May sort the issue

yoyo1234 · 12/03/2021 11:19

Why would you want any range rivers ? Especially just for carting children around. Look at the evidence on polls of owners ( Which magazine).
Only reason for these monstrosities is possibly if you are a livestock vet, farmers, live down a long dirt track in a rural location, construction worker. If it is white they look especially ridiculous .

LadyCounterblast · 12/03/2021 11:19

Smaller inside than you'd think.

Other one to consider would be Lexus RX L.

yoyo1234 · 12/03/2021 11:20

Range Rovers

yoyo1234 · 12/03/2021 11:25

In This is your money: "The £65,000 Range Rover Sport is the least reliable new car you can buy for the second year running, says poll of UK drivers"

Rahgh · 12/03/2021 11:27

We have just bought a hybrid discovery sport, much bigger than the evoque inside and same as RR sport. However, no way id squeeze 3 car seats in the back. You need to have space to access buckles and retrieve lost toys! The hybridness is brilliant though! I love it!

tigerbread20 · 12/03/2021 11:31

I reluctantly got an Xc90 and I bloody love it now. DC 3 on the way and I'm so glad we went for this over the f pace I wanted.

Loopyloututu2 · 12/03/2021 11:34

You can buy 7 seater RR’s you know - sorry not rtft. They have 2 spare seats that pop up electronically at the back. I find we hardly use them but they’re there if you need them.
We also have a Chrysler voyager which is IMO the best family car.

Ahhwoofwoof · 12/03/2021 11:35

*I think a RR Sport is aimed at people who want the kudos of owning a RR but can't really afford it (No offence if that's not you OP). They're not the most practical size wise, especially with three kids.

Is this really what people think? I don't want the 'kudos' of a RR I want the luxury finish and nice drive and actually prefer the look of the sport.*

Yes, people think this, also around here that you live with your parents and spend all your money on leasing a car that you can't afford to keep up with neighbours when really you can't even afford your own place.

1Wanda1 · 12/03/2021 11:37

We've just got a new XC90 and find it very luxe and comfortable. 3 kids, though only 1 in a child seat.

My in-laws gave a RR Sport with 2 kids in child seats and it is a lot smaller than the XC90. I can't see how you would fit a third seat in there. The XC90 is massive in the back.

And even then they don't use anything that's a "sport" version. Madness!

we ordered a hybrid disco yesterday at work...

the x5 is the nicest to drive imo

Alexandernevermind · 12/03/2021 11:53

I have always loved a RR, but find the Sport far too small.
I have a Disco 4, which is amazing for bootspace and has 2 pop up back seats, which are really useful for giving lifts on school runs.
Admittedly it was the cheap option (£15k budget at 10 years old) and unfortunately is a diesel. I would love a hybrid when they come out, if that is I could afford it!

Overthinkingalways · 12/03/2021 12:27

@cujo and it was a discovery 4 not a discovery sport? What dealership if you don't mind me asking? I've called the dealership after your message and they haven't been made aware of any launch. They know that they are in the pipeline but can't say if it'll be 6 weeks, 6 months or a year until release.

RR sport hybrid has no 7 seater option due to battery raising boot profile slightly.

I knew i'd attract some RR/JLR hate but ultimately differences of opinion make the world a nicer place! I don't tend to judge people on their car choice or particularly care about anyone's car choices other than my own so its a none issue for me. But we do actually live rurally down a long dirt track so thankfully i should pass the test Wink

@givememarmite I think you are right. Unless @cujo comes up trumps and my dealership is in the dark but the Disco hybrid is out...I do hope so!

0ne good thing about owning a range rover is you get to drive a lot of courtesy cars, be on first name terns with the service team at the dealership and complimentary coffees at the dealership. Can't think of anymore

sunnydaleslayer · 12/03/2021 12:31

Most dealers won't accept three children. You could maybe use one as a deposit and pay the rest in cash?

Sorry OP couldn't help it Grin
