To buy a Range Rover sport with potentially three children

Posted elsewhere but added to AIBU for traffic as got no responses. I know mumsnet typically hate 4x4s and their drivers but hoping my hybrid choice softens the blow!

Changing my car shortly. Ideally want a RR Sport but whilst we only need to fit two car seats for now, baby 3 isn't totally off the cards. Would an XC90 be the more sensible option? Or has anyone got 3 seats across a RR Sport? Preference is to rear face as long as possible however eldest would be 4/5 should we have a third so potentially ready to move into a HBB. Car would be new so latest models.

Other options would be a Disco but i want hybrid and they haven't bought a hybrid model out yet. Obviously can't look in show rooms right now but need to make a decision soon!

These are the only models i like following all my research. Can’t afford the standard RR and not ready to convert to a mum wagon/bus yet! Will have the XC90 if I have to but whilst it’s a perfectly nice car I find it a bit less aesthetically pleasing/luxurious.

Can anyone tell me about successfully having a RR sport with three young children.

AIBU
YES - no way will it work get the xc90
NO - I’ve had 3 littles in a RR S and it’s fine!

I don’t think you can buy a car with children. They aren’t legal tender, and apparently it’s frowned apon to swap them for a car!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/03/2021 12:33

Damn it x post!

Overthinkingalways · 12/03/2021 12:37

@sunnydaleslayer @GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing Grin Grin Grin That's a shame given the run around my toddler has given me today Wink

I can’t believe people think a RR sport is for those who can’t afford a real Range - have you seen the price ??? When I see them my first thought is definitely not ‘they’re skint’. Grin some proper weird people on here when money/class/ get raised

HairyToity · 12/03/2021 12:41

Probably not fancy enough but we have a Peugeot 5008. Love it.

Luckystar1 · 12/03/2021 12:42

OP sorry I previously commented but I just wanted to say, as to reliability, we had our RR for 4 years, and it didn’t give us one second’s bother.

The Q7, which is less than a year old is constantly bloody binging things at us on the screen. Nothing is ‘wrong’ per se, it just has SOOOO many bloody safety ‘features’ that it goes haywire sometimes and loses its mind!

Wishitsnows · 12/03/2021 12:44

I ordered a hybrid discovery sport last week and been given delivery date of beginning of June. Not sure on the size of the backseat as I ordered online and can't really tell from the online video if 3 car seats would fit.

pinkandstripey · 12/03/2021 12:58

We had a hybrid RR Sport for a few weeks (dh worked for lease company), you got 26 miles of electric on a full charge.

26 miles.

Overthinkingalways · 12/03/2021 13:03

@pinkandstripey Perfect for me. I WFH and only travel around our little local villages. Hoping to cut fuel costs to next to zero. When i'm back to working a couple of days a month in the office I should get there on that amount, can charge at work and then will get home again.

YABU, it will cost more than the price you'd get for the kids. Grin

ArnoJambonsBike · 12/03/2021 13:04

I'm not sure I'd be buying a car that's natural habitat is the hard shoulder with its bonnet up if I had three kids.

DollyParton2 · 12/03/2021 13:06

I don’t hate 4 x 4s but Range Rovers are beyond tacky and awful, please don’t. They are so ugly and somehow turn most drivers into arrogant twats who can’t see how ridiculous they look in it!! Far nicer cats than this. An Audi Q5 is my idea of perfection.

DollyParton2 · 12/03/2021 13:07

Nicer cars... and cats Grin

onlythewildones · 12/03/2021 13:35

OP if you are going for an XC90, we got ours second hand and it was a good £20k cheaper than new. I'd say that's worth it! I will warn you though, the battery is great around town but is quickly sapped on country roads.

If a Tesla is in your budget, however...

Knitwit99 · 12/03/2021 13:43

I don't think you'd get 3 car seats in the back of a disco sport either, sorry. The middle seat is narrow.

ConsuelaHammock · 12/03/2021 13:48

RR are lovely looking cars but aren’t they very unreliable . I don’t understand you wanting to spend £65 k on a car in order to save a few hundred pounds a month on fuel? That’s crazy money for a car.

Overthinkingalways · 12/03/2021 14:02

@Knitwit99 Yes I know a disco sport isn't an option - only if the full size disco was available hybrid.

@ConsuelaHammock We've had other models before and they've been fine but appreciate they do have a bad rep. That would be crazy if it was the only reason we wanted one, there are lots of reasons that is just a bonus. Hybrid is a must for us for company car allowance criteria.

@onlythewildones I hadn't considered Tesla, purely because I don't know anyone that has one so they are kind of off of my radar. Had a look at the website and don't think the look/styling is for me but thank you for the suggestion
**@givememarmite* I think you are right. Unless @cujo* comes up trumps and my dealership is in the dark but the Disco hybrid is out...I do hope so!
Listers Land Rover in Droitwich

definitely a land rover disco sport 1.5 p300e r-dynamic, the plug in hybrid

cakeandteajustforme · 12/03/2021 14:17

Hybrid is all well and good but there are new full electric options coming be out all the time, and they're WAY more environmentally friendly even than a hybrid.

Have you had a look at the Mercedes eqc? I've just ordered one of those.

cakeandteajustforme · 12/03/2021 14:18

But I only have 1 child so can't answer the 3x car seats question.

A few hundred quid for a home charging port, a £65k+ 2 tonne car that does less than 25mpg when its used its (poxy) 26miles from and overnight electric charge...

We had a Porsche Taycan for a few months after the RR. I just need to save up the £85k+ for my very own 😆😆 200 miles on a full charge, kids in the back comfortably and 0-60 in about 2 seconds 😁

Diesse · 12/03/2021 14:27

@Throwntothewolves

Perhaps branch out a little. Look at Skoda Kofiaq, the 7 seat variety. Or a VW Toureg. Or the Volvo. Or a Ford S max (people carrier, but a bit more sporty looking), Audi Q7, Ford Edge, and so on (disclaimer-I don't know if any of these have hybrid models) I'd prob go for a 7 seater for the extra space it will give everyone rather than having the kids a squashed in the back seat.

I think a RR Sport is aimed at people who want the kudos of owning a RR but can't really afford it (No offence if that's not you OP). They're not the most practical size wise, especially with three kids.

People are so endlessly rude.

The Sport is ace for a couple, I bought one because it’s smaller than the RR ( I could afford whichever I wanted). The Sport won’t be big enough with 3 children, it’s frankly not that roomy in the back even for two.

LBOCS2 · 12/03/2021 14:30

That leaves the XC90 which may be the one in fairness. I just don't feel mature enough to be succumbing to a sensible Volvo but looks like that may well be the better bet.

If it's any help, I drive my 3 children around with pink hair listening to punk in my XC90 😁. You don't have to immediately switch to a twin set and pearls.

It's a great car. There's plenty of room across the back (even with two car seats and a gangly teenager) and the boot is huge. I've been doing a 6hr round trip frequently during lockdown and it's comfortable to be in and drive for that time, and it handles construction sites and unmade roads well.

abricotine · 12/03/2021 14:31

@DollyParton2 thank goodness most people don't think like you else over 30,000 hard working people in the Midlands would be out of a job. It's just a car!
