Just this really .Cant see how you could spend such a sum doing up a flat! More than a small house in some areas ! This is not a thread about the rights and wrongs of funding (thats a separate issue clearly!) Just seems so much !

OP posts:
peak2021 · 06/03/2021 16:07

It is not a typical small flat.

Expensive wallpaper, new flooring, new kitchen, rewiring (building is Georgian), just for starters.

Pity he is still in it and not in a prison cell awaiting trial for manslaughter where he should be.

Alsohuman · 06/03/2021 16:11

It’s beyond me why a new kitchen’s needed. Sam Cam put a new top of the range one in, it can’t need replacing already surely? All the structural stuff like rewiring would be paid for as part of the usual building maintenance so not included in the £200k. I don’t understand either, OP.

the80sweregreat · 06/03/2021 16:48

If it's their own money then that's fair enough. It is a lot of money but considering a ' bespoke' kitchen could be about 50k or something and electrics are a huge amount for any place , then I can really believe that it would come to this amount , easily.
We must have spent 20 k or something similar in 16 years on our home and that is a tiny 3 bed semi! It does add up if your having it all done at once and having 'high end 'things not b and q or wickes as we have. Granite worktops alone are a huge amount ( so we didn't bother ! Lol)
Is it taxpayers money ?

Morgoth · 06/03/2021 17:06

Is it taxpayer money or personal money?

AllTheFloralCurtains · 06/03/2021 17:08

This. If its their own money - whatever, horses for courses. If it's taxpayers money it's a piss take
FightingTheFoo · 06/03/2021 17:09

My understanding is it's taxpayers money. And yes it's outrageous.

I'd also like to point out that it's absolutely the Daily Mail who are driving this story - it's on their front page today, for the second time in a week.

Please remember this next time before spouting the usual crap about it being a Tory paper, crap etc etc

ProfYaffle · 06/03/2021 17:09

Weren't they trying to set up a charity so Tory donors could pay for it? Not sure if that might have been vetoed?

VladmirsPoutine · 06/03/2021 17:41

Hmmm the reporting of it has been rather all very cutesy, polite and 'good for them'. Curious.

Fluffy40 · 06/03/2021 17:44

It’s a “work” house. It’s part of his renumeration.

It’s still a Tory newspaper alright.

It’s just gunning for Carrie Symonds and has been for a while.

VladmirsPoutine · 06/03/2021 18:08

It's a racist and misogynistic paper. It's a disgusting paper that in all honesty should go out of print.

CruCru · 06/03/2021 18:10

It seems like a lot of money to me. However I wonder if getting it refurbished is so politically embarrassing, hardly anyone has done anything for ages. Supposedly the Camerons spent £30k on it a decade ago. Although £30k on a flat seems a lot, it is surprisingly easy to get a new £30k kitchen.

They won’t be taking the curtains with them when they go. Realistically Downing Street isn’t going to be furnished and decorated cheaply.

GladysTheGroovyMule · 06/03/2021 18:28

They can do what they like with their own money but it seems they wanted to set up a charity or something to get Tory donors to pay for it. It’s sickening imo at the best of times but after this past year of over 120000 deaths (and counting) from mismanagement and money being pissed up the wall and so many people unemployed and facing real financial hardship it’s less like a slap in the face and more like a decapitation.

It’s still a Tory paper they just hate Carrie symonds so are calling it her project or whatever, like Johnson has nothing to do with it. I’m not keen on CS either but it doesn’t change the fact the fail always have and always will be misogynists with their own motive behind things.
tobee · 06/03/2021 18:39

@Fluffy40

It’s a “work” house. It’s part of his renumeration.

It's not really a work house though is it? It's a private flat separate from the offices It might go with the job, like a vicar or caretaker might have etc, but surely refurb you should pay for yourself?

peak2021 · 06/03/2021 18:41

@GladysTheGroovyMule I doubt that the Daily Mail would be so insulting to a man were there a woman Prime Minister again. Ironic in a way when Carrie Symonds is engaged to the biggest misogynist Prime Minister in recent history.

ancientgran · 06/03/2021 18:44

It just isn't good at the moment is it, the country on it's knees, NHS told there is no money but doing up his flat is a priority. I think if they don't like the decor they should replace it not tax payers. If it needs maintenance then yes tax payers should pay but I think they have spent more money on the rewiring and stuff like that.

Then there is the £370,000 to get Patel out of a pickle and then the contracts for their mates and those contracts that aren't published yet. It really doesn't look good even if it is all reasonable.

LostToucan · 06/03/2021 18:45

See that the Fail is also doing its usual “hinting” today as well (close friend).

Dennis used to get made fun of but I can't remember if that was the DM.

the80sweregreat · 06/03/2021 18:49

None of it is good at all , but if there was an election next month they would still win it so they are worried are they?

the80sweregreat · 06/03/2021 18:50

They are not worried rather.

Depressing.

PersimmonTree · 06/03/2021 18:51

Just a drop in the ocean of misspent taxpayers' billions.

How many more online petitions will we have to sign before the country wakes up and grows a pair?

cardibach · 06/03/2021 18:55

@Fluffy40

I’ve had one of those. I lived in at a boarding school. Was only allowed to paint - anything else was done by the school to their wishes, not mine. A few tins of paint, even professionally applied, won’t cost that. Anything else that needs doing should be determined with no regard to them. And when I say ‘needs’ that’s what I mean. No new kitchen or bathroom because they don’t like it - only if it’s at the point of not functioning.
the80sweregreat · 06/03/2021 18:56

The country think they have done a good job of the vaccine rollouts etc and ' Labour would bankrupt the country' probably. Usual story.
I'm not keen on Sir Kier Starmer myself, but anyone is better than this crowd. Unfortunately others don't agree and they are still riding high in the polls. Something has gone wrong somewhere !
