Just this really .Cant see how you could spend such a sum doing up a flat! More than a small house in some areas ! This is not a thread about the rights and wrongs of funding (thats a separate issue clearly!) Just seems so much !

Theresa May didn’t claim anything for refurbishing that flat.

Just saying.

1Morewineplease · 06/03/2021 18:59

I think it's obscene. It's a small flat.
Every single family that has moved in to that flat, feels the need to spend squillions on 'doing it up.'
Given that the incumbents still have their own property and also have the use of Chequers , I think that it's disgraceful.

DarkDarkNight · 06/03/2021 19:02

@peak2021

It is not a typical small flat.

Expensive wallpaper, new flooring, new kitchen, rewiring (building is Georgian), just for starters.

Pity he is still in it and not in a prison cell awaiting trial for manslaughter where he should be.

Will it really need any of this though? It was done by the Cameron’s when they lived there, it will still be perfectly liveable, just not to Carrie’s taste. It is a ridiculous indulgence.

She is a thrifty woman. I'm not a Tory at all, but at least she wouldn't have done anything like this during a pandemic if she was still there. Boris and co obviously don't care.

@FightingTheFoo

My understanding is it's taxpayers money. And yes it's outrageous.

I'd also like to point out that it's absolutely the Daily Mail who are driving this story - it's on their front page today, for the second time in a week.

Please remember this next time before spouting the usual crap about it being a Tory paper, crap etc etc

A distraction technique getting us outraged about a comparatively small amount compared to the millions pissed up the wall on useless PPE and jobs for the boys.
DianaT1969 · 06/03/2021 19:27

The Tories can't read the room as usual. The timing is so ill-judged. NHS workers denied a payrise above 1.5%.
It is being pushed by the Daily Hate though, so who knows if we're getting the real story.
I get the impression a 'friend' of Dominic Cummings has been feeding them all the Carrie stories.

tobee · 06/03/2021 19:31

The Daily Mail will love publishing stuff about this. An ideal combination of stirring up their readership and ample opportunities to, overtly or covertly, blame it on a woman; Carrie Symonds.

ChameleonClara · 06/03/2021 19:38

@Fluffy40

It’s a “work” house. It’s part of his renumeration.
Er, no. There are rules on how much they can spend.

The refurb is embarrassing IMO, at a time like this to be faffing about with curtains.

It’s another part of a concerted Daily Heil campaign against Symonds over the last few weeks.

I don’t like Symonds but I’m wondering who is behind this campaign.

I feel like the DM has it in for Carrie.
Unsure33 · 06/03/2021 19:47

There a lot of reports in the papers stirring things up of where the money might , perhaps , be coming from . As usual the press can say anything without proof of any kind .

And as with everything else people jump on the bandwagon and make assumptions about the assumptions.

It’s just tedious.

If it proved that the tax payers paid for it all and that is against the rules THEN feel free to make your criticism. Until then don’t get taken in by the press

MatildaTheCat · 06/03/2021 19:51

I can’t believe Boris is in the slightest interested or bothered by the decor. This is Carrie if it’s true. They get a grant of £30k to pay for decoration etc which seems generous enough.

It’s not like they are going to be there very long.

notanothertakeaway · 06/03/2021 19:51

A really nice gesture would be if the downing street flat were maintained according to local authority policy for that area, as if it were a council flat

Knitterbabe · 06/03/2021 19:54

A high end kitchen and a couple of bathrooms could eat up half the spend. And labour charges are high in London. I hope they enjoy it.

givemesteel · 06/03/2021 19:55

Bit ambitious for BJ to assume he's going to be a two term PM in my opinion. I'm a tory and I think they will will the next GE but I don't think the party will want him to stand again. But 4 years is a long time in politics these days, so who knows.

colouringindoors · 06/03/2021 19:57

Wait til you hear about the £1 million+ new Media Room Angry

colouringindoors · 06/03/2021 19:58

2 point 6 MILLION £££

WTF!

Snowjive2 · 06/03/2021 20:06

This government is rotten to its core.

colouringindoors · 06/03/2021 20:08

totally. disgusting and morally bankrupt

the80sweregreat · 06/03/2021 20:23

It does have Dominic Cummings written all over this. A source ..

You’re right. Oddly I was only this afternoon wondering what he’s up to now.
LostToucan · 06/03/2021 20:46

Continuing to be an arse as Dominic Cummings Ltd?

peak2021 · 06/03/2021 20:49

Bit ambitious for BJ to assume he's going to be a two term PM in my opinion.

I remember when the people of London decided they could not cope with Ken Livingstone as Mayor anymore and voted Boris Johnson in (2008). Someone at work who was upset by this noted Boris Johnson's comment he would only serve two terms and hoped that would be summer term and autumn term, so gone by Christmas.

I don't think for a second that Boris Johnson intends to be Prime Minister until 2029. The only person who will benefit from that is his fiancee Carrie Symonds, as Boris Johnson cannot have a mistress whilst in number 10.

Justajot · 06/03/2021 20:56

I can't see why you'd choose to spend £200k on a flat that isn't yours. Particularly when he was whinging that he's broke.
