Told off at supermarket for using the wrong checkout

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:25

I was shopping in Morrisons today and then went to self-checkout. There were some clear screens covering some of the checkouts but I thought this was for social distancing purpose.

The till was ready to be used (as in not turned off), so i scanned my items and I bought some paracetmal which triggered an age check to come up meaning a shopkeeper had to come and confirm it.

Anyway, this girl started telling me to watch where i'm standing and "you shouldn't even be using this till, it's closed you know" and rolling her eyes at me.

I just said "sorry I didn't realise".

But AIBU to think some shopkeepers think we're psychic? They could have turned the till off if they didn't want people to use it?
There was no "do not use" signs on it either 😕

If there were no signs to say it was out of use then how would anyone know not to use them?

She was just being rude tbh

OlympicProcrastinator · 04/03/2021 16:29

That was really rude of her. So you made a mistake, so what? Even if you did happen to miss a sign there was no need for her to speak to you like that or roll her eyes at you. YANBU, sorry you had a rubbish experience.

WetJan · 04/03/2021 16:32

Check your receipt OP, there may be a way to give 'feedback' to the shop, there is on Tesco ones.

DynamoKev · 04/03/2021 16:37

YANBU to be upset at how you were spoken to.
YABU to call staff member " this girl "

RunningFromInsanity · 04/03/2021 16:37

I’m willing to bet anything she didn’t actually roll her eyes.

You didn’t get ‘told off’ you were informed that the till you were using wasn’t actually suppose to be used.

A non event.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:38

I left the recipet at the till by accident as I felt embarrassed so rushed out Confused

I understand her mentioning
"Just to let you know, for the future, this till is out of use" with a smile on her face or whatever,
It was the rolling of eyes and aggressive tone that got me

OP posts:
ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:39

@RunningFromInsanity well you'd lose that bet because her tone was aggressive; I do know the difference between good customer service and being intentionally made to look stupid

OP posts:
NotFabulousDarling · 04/03/2021 16:42

Just to let you know, for the future, this till is out of use It's unlikely to be out of use "for the future".
You said there was a clear screen covering the checkout. So clearly you shouldn't use it. The poor member of staff can only work with what she's been given by management and she's had to deal with people like you who think rules don't apply to them all day. YABU.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:45

@NotFabulousDarling but how does a clear screen covering a till that is on signify "this is not to be used"
The clear screen was set out really confusinly - almost like a zig zag.

Surely it makes more sense to either put the till as not in use or stick a paper on it saying "do not use" rather than just a zig zag clear screen going through the middle?

Clear screens to me dont signify "do not use"

OP posts:
NotFabulousDarling · 04/03/2021 16:45

There were some clear screens covering some of the checkouts but I thought this was for social distancing purpose.
Either you knew it was closed for social distancing and used it because the others were full (therefore you broke social distancing) or you knew it was closed for social distancing so despite other tills being available you deliberately used this one and deserved to be talked to like an idiot. Which is it?
Do you really think you're the first person to have thought of ignoring the rules at the checkout today? This week? This month? This year?

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:45

The clear screen was not fully covering that till - it was a zig zag clear screen running through the middle of all the tills

OP posts:
NotFabulousDarling · 04/03/2021 16:46

You're contradicting your OP.
ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:47

@NotFabulousDarling wrong on both suggestions, but you seem to have a chip on your shoulder about customers and are automatically presuming i'm in the wrong and that I "deserve to be spoken to like an idiot"

I really hope you don't work with the public as your attitude is awful. Have a lovely day.

OP posts:
Lynora · 04/03/2021 16:48

I would have thought it was obvious it was out of use for SD purposes. I'm not surprised she rolled her eyes at you.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:48

@NotFabulousDarling i didn't full describe the screens in my OP, they were a zig zag through the middle.

OP posts:
ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:52

There seems to be an attitude by some people that the "customer is always wrong",
If it was the case that many customers had made the same mistake then surely they have to make it more.obvious?

OP posts:
ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:52

@Lynora so clear zig zag clear screens through a middle of all working tills,
I'm supposed to know which ones are in use and which ones aren't?

OP posts:
Fairyliz · 04/03/2021 16:56

Can I have a diagram I’m confused Confused

User133847 · 04/03/2021 16:56

Very sorry this happened to you. Don't let it get you down though.

StepOutOfLine · 04/03/2021 16:57

Quite. OP, you say yourself in those first words that you knew the till wasn't to be used. But you used it. Then got told off. All you needed to do at that point was apologise.
ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:58

@StepOutOfLine i never said i knew the till wasn't to be used?

I said i thought it was for social distancing in terms of clear screens to seperate people.

OP posts:
LubaLuca · 04/03/2021 16:59

I don't understand. The screens weren't covering any of the tills, they were just nearby? Some of the self-service tills were available for use, and others weren't, but there was no way to tell which was which?

Dunairbeanat · 04/03/2021 16:59

Whatever the situation op there was no need for her to be rude about it.
Mere mortals like you and I make mistakes sometimes Smile

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:59

@StepOutOfLine also if i'm not the first person to make the mistake, then they need to make it more obvious i.e. do not use signs

OP posts:
StepOutOfLine · 04/03/2021 16:59

Rofling at the OP getting arsey with everyone on here and accusing them of having chips on their shoulders and everyone hating customers, yet being PO because of being told off in a shop.
