Told off at supermarket for using the wrong checkout

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:25

I was shopping in Morrisons today and then went to self-checkout. There were some clear screens covering some of the checkouts but I thought this was for social distancing purpose.

The till was ready to be used (as in not turned off), so i scanned my items and I bought some paracetmal which triggered an age check to come up meaning a shopkeeper had to come and confirm it.

Anyway, this girl started telling me to watch where i'm standing and "you shouldn't even be using this till, it's closed you know" and rolling her eyes at me.

I just said "sorry I didn't realise".

But AIBU to think some shopkeepers think we're psychic? They could have turned the till off if they didn't want people to use it?
There was no "do not use" signs on it either 😕

@LubaLuca yes basically. All the self-checkouts were on.
Some were allowed to be used, some weren't (though not obvious).

There was a clear zigzag screen through the middle.

The self-checkouts were allowed to be used but only some of them. They did not make it clear which ones weren't supposed to be used as they were all switched on and none of them had "do not use" on

@Dunairbeanat thank you :)

I could've made a post saying
"AIBU to have slipped on the floor and the shopkeeper shouted at me to move"

And some perfect beings would comment
"You clearly slipped on purpose"

"The shopkeers had a hard day and probably loads of people have slipped."

"I bet you any thing that didn't happen"

@StepOutOfLine actually some people have realised that humand make mistakes and we just don't tell them off.

I work with children and I would never roll my eyes or tell them off for making a mistake

Morrison’s can be quite bad for their lippy assistants. I have witnessed this a few times and also been on the receiving end myself lol i just said ok and and walked away, I just put it down to them being stressed.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 17:19

@Chocsmyfav I don't really shop in Morrisons much, I find Sainsbury's really good for customer services... well my local anyway

canigooutyet · 04/03/2021 17:21

did all the screens have the clear zig zag shape on them?

muddyford · 04/03/2021 17:22

When I went to Sainsbury's a few weeks ago, crack of dawn, unbeknownst to me they had swapped over the entrance and exit doors since my previous visit. No signs at that stage. My usual entrance door opened as I approached. Inside, some officious jobsworth made a huge fuss, saying I had come in the exit, all accusatory. I told her there was no sign and the door had opened. She claimed there was a sign. After I had done my shopping she came up to me and said the sign hadn't been put out. No apology, just more attitude. Little did she know I had already made a complaint about her rudeness!

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 17:24

@canigooutyet i probably made a mistake in my OP;
The zigzag screen was going down the middle, so tbh I don't even know how to describe it - that's how confusing it was - it just was basically a zig zag of screens going down the middle so you couldn't pinpoint which ones were okay to use and which ones werent

I think we should cut retail staff some slack. The supermarkets are full of fuckwits shopping in pairs, not social distancing and generally behaving like idiots. They make me cross and I don’t have to put up with it all day. It must be really stressful.

Don’t be so precious OP shop workers have been through such a tough time working all the way through this .

Donotfeedthebears · 04/03/2021 17:30

I’ve found some retail workers really stroppy. In M&S Foodhall with DH, one of the assistants shouted in my face “it’s one person per self checkout, STAND BACK!” How was I meant to know? I did contact M&S to complain and I’ve not seen her since.

Went in this weekend and the lady looking after the self checkouts was really nice and said of course me and DH could use it together. “One of you scan and one of you pack, makes life easier doesn’t it!”

🤷🏻‍♀️

Donotfeedthebears · 04/03/2021 17:32

And I’ve worked as airline cabin crew with some really rude customers but you can’t be rude back to people! We were trained to enforce safety and security procedures in a polite and friendly way. In my current job, if I went round people rude to colleagues, I would expect to be pulled up on it.

I work in retail and am mostly on self service at the moment. While maybe she could have been slightly more polite, we have to deal with so many morons in one day that sometimes our patience does just away from us. It's even worse since the pandemic. I have had people try to use self service tills when they aren't on - even when the screen says "this till is closed" they will try to log in themselves to open it. While I understand this is not what you did, just try to understand for you this is just one experience of your day, for that poor girl it's probably happened 50 times in one hour (I'm not even exaggerating)

On the subject of retail staff, we are being treated horrendously these days. At the beginning of the pandemic we were treated as essential, that feeling went out the window long before Christmas.

Stellaris22 · 04/03/2021 17:33

I work in retail and I'm really struggling to understand what you mean by 'zigzag covers' on the screen.

Depends on the type of checkout, but we would just lock the screen if it was out of use.

But cut the staff some slack, we have to deal with rude customers who don't follow basic social distancing etc, it's understandable to be frustrated and a bit short. Treat staff how you would like to be treated, they're people too.

notacooldad · 04/03/2021 17:35

I left the recipet at the till by accident as I felt embarrassed so rushed out
Seriously?
I feel like rolling my eyes at such a non event.
If someone had said that to me I would have just said 'I didn't realise and carried on with my day.
Its not worth head space!

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 17:35

@Donotfeedthebears exactly! It doesn't take much to realise customers aren't psychic and we are going to make mistakes.
I hate the attitude of "customers are always entitled" or "customers are so rude" just because said customer has made an error

@Peppafrig I've been working in schools throughout, including working with key worker children, imagine if i was just patronising to a parent just because "i've had to work throughout"

OP posts:
ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 17:36

@Stellaris22 shouldn't the staff also treat customers the way they want to be treated too?

I usually scan as I shop in Tesco, pay then go. Easy lol seriously they are prob just stressed, dealing with the public. I have also saw a few arguments in the supermarkets lately. Nearly a punch fight in Tesco, over the self service tills. It was rather good entertainment at the time haha

23PissOffAvenueWF · 04/03/2021 17:36

This really could not be more of a non-event.

Move on.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 17:37

@incywincyspiders but if it's happened 50 times a day, maybe they should put a sign up saying "till not in operation" rather than leaving it on and then complaining a customer is using it?

OP posts:
Theunamedcat · 04/03/2021 17:38

Considering there piss poor treatment of staff I'm not surprised they are arsey

I've got noro virus "get into work" I seriously can't stop vomiting etc "get on the fish counter" cue a shopping trip where we see legs sticking out from behind the fish counter where the poor staff member passed out

justanotherneighinparadise · 04/03/2021 17:40

I assume this is the self service tills at Tesco? I think if so every other till is out of use due to SD. I agree it isn’t obvious and I only figured it out when I queued and saw that other people were leaving the gap and so I did too.
