Told off at supermarket for using the wrong checkout

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 16:25

I was shopping in Morrisons today and then went to self-checkout. There were some clear screens covering some of the checkouts but I thought this was for social distancing purpose.

The till was ready to be used (as in not turned off), so i scanned my items and I bought some paracetmal which triggered an age check to come up meaning a shopkeeper had to come and confirm it.

Anyway, this girl started telling me to watch where i'm standing and "you shouldn't even be using this till, it's closed you know" and rolling her eyes at me.

I just said "sorry I didn't realise".

But AIBU to think some shopkeepers think we're psychic? They could have turned the till off if they didn't want people to use it?
There was no "do not use" signs on it either 😕

@NotFabulousDarling

There were some clear screens covering some of the checkouts but I thought this was for social distancing purpose. Either you knew it was closed for social distancing and used it because the others were full (therefore you broke social distancing) or you knew it was closed for social distancing so despite other tills being available you deliberately used this one and deserved to be talked to like an idiot. Which is it? Do you really think you're the first person to have thought of ignoring the rules at the checkout today? This week? This month? This year?

Why on earth do you keep calling the OP a liar? She told us what happened, and when you contradicted her she repeated it. But you keep calling her a liar. Why? Hmm

Derekhello · 04/03/2021 18:28

@ReverendRicketyCricket

Hugs and prayers hun

Flowers

😂 🤣

Also, get over it OP 🙄 and cut the poor girl some slack retail staff have really been through it this year, some customers have awful towards them. And still are.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 18:34

@Derekhello and can retail staff not cut customers some slack?
Many people have also been through it this year, doesn't give an excuse for us all to he rude for each other.

I've spent the day in a school, wearing a mask all day, and apron, changing clothes which have been soiled on, and it's generally been a hectic day with constant on the go.
Does that give me a right to snap at the shopkeeper to make things more clearer?
No I just apologised nicely. Like she could have spoken nicely.

@SpudsandGravy for reason, some people believe the customer is always wrong

It really doesn’t matter what the set up was of the till or if the OP was right or wrong in using it you do not talk to customers like that or even less do you eyeroll regardless of your personal circumstances
Trained by M&S many years ago the customer is always right and even if they are not you are polite at all times
Dropping of these standards would leave you looking for another job

Donotfeedthebears · 04/03/2021 18:35

Haven’t we all had a tough year? Why are retail workers put on a pedestal above us?

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 18:36

It just seems hypocritical people commenting to give retail staff some slack, when they don't give customers the same 'slack',
Most customers are not purposely rude, and especially during covid when rules are here, there and everywhere and no shop is the same, or maybe they are not regulars in the shop, it is possible for customers to genuinely make mistakes and not be purposely being awkward

OP posts:
Donotfeedthebears · 04/03/2021 18:37

Only on Mumsnet is the customer always wrong! Does everybody work in a shop or something?

Why put down someone’s job? That’s rude and ignorant

Mookie81 · 04/03/2021 18:40

So perturbed you didn't even take your receipt?! It must have been bad Hmm.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 18:42

@Mookie81 well after being told off to "watch where I stand!" I wasn't exactly about to take my time was i? No staff should make any customer feel uncomfortable

OP posts:
ApolloandDaphne · 04/03/2021 18:42

I shop in Morrisons all the time and I have no clue about any zig zag screens. Never seen any ever.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 18:43

@ApolloandDaphne i had never seen any before today but they need to work on making it more obvious rather than telling customers off for not realising

Stellaris22 · 04/03/2021 18:49

@Nohomemadecandles was there any reason to be so nasty about someone's job?

Enorel · 04/03/2021 18:49

Some people are just rude, regardless of what you do or say. It's rarely anything to do with you. They're just arsey for their own reasons.

ToldOff292 · 04/03/2021 18:52

I don't think anyone meant supermarkets are a "shitty" job, i think they were referring to people on hear saying retail staff are having a shit time

Nohomemadecandles · 04/03/2021 18:54

@Stellaris22 I was quoting someone else! Who said it was no wonder they were rude because the job's rubbish. It was a reply. Hence the face.

I didn't say it was - it was a reply to people saying it's a rubbish job / time etc. Who said it meant they had every right to be rude
Nohomemadecandles · 04/03/2021 18:57

@AllownotEllow

I can see how it would annoy you, but to be fair she had probably had a shittier day than you. I would hate to be working in a supermarket during covid.
Like this one!
ilovesooty · 04/03/2021 19:01

@starfishmummy

We definitely need a picture. It's vwry Unreasonabke of the OP not to go back and take one
But she's probably too embarrassed to set foot in there again Grin

@Lifechange1981

Hello! Sorry to hear what happened to you love.

More do, sorry for the bitchy replies on here to you from random mothers.

We should be supporting each other not belittling each other.

In a cruel world, choose to be kind 🌸❤️

Stay strong. E x

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/03/2021 19:03

@RunningFromInsanity

I’m willing to bet anything she didn’t actually roll her eyes.

You didn’t get ‘told off’ you were informed that the till you were using wasn’t actually suppose to be used.

A non event.

Right there with you
Nohomemadecandles · 04/03/2021 19:05

@Theunamedcat

Considering there piss poor treatment of staff I'm not surprised they are arsey

I've got noro virus "get into work" I seriously can't stop vomiting etc "get on the fish counter" cue a shopping trip where we see legs sticking out from behind the fish counter where the poor staff member passed out

And this

I think sorry is the word you were looking for

Stellaris22 · 04/03/2021 19:07

I apologise then as I misread the post.

caspersmagicaljourney · 04/03/2021 19:10

To be honest I would consider changing my shop.
Shop staff only have one chance to get stroppy with me. I don't come back for a second helping.😐
