To think crop tops not for 6-7 year olds?

Bought this:
www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-paris-camo-slogan-top-6-14-yrs-/p/clp60485351

for my tall 5 year old. Didn't realise it was a crop top, pics were small on phone and not happy, she won't be wearing it. On her, her midriff is definitely more out compared to the model in pics anyway. Am I in the majority here? I'm not keen on skinny jeans or bikinis for this age either and realise (at least in the jeans case) that they're widely sold.
YABU - this cropped style is fine for 6-7 year olds
YANBU- it's too teenage.

When I was your daughter's age, in the 90s, the thing I wanted more than anything was a crop top. It took me a long time to forgive them for not buying me one Grin

sunflowersandbuttercups · 27/02/2021 12:17

It looks absolutely fine on the model.

I also don't understand the issue with skinny jeans or kids bikinis either.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/02/2021 12:20

It's fine for a 6 yo, but then
I don't have a problem with skinny jeans or bikinis either (as long as they're kids style)

I clicked on the link after reading your post and was expecting something a lot more... extreme, to be honest. It's fine!

My daughter has a few like that - she wears a vest top under, or high waisted jeans/trousers. Obviously if it's impractical with the other things that your daughter wears (might be a bit draughty in chilly weather) then by all means avoid those styles, but I don't see anything remotely inappropriate there.

Having said that both my daughters wear/have worn bikinis for the beach (their choice) and skinny jeans, and I don't have an issue there either.

sunshineandshowers21 · 27/02/2021 12:24

honestly don’t see the problem. if you don’t like them, don’t put put your kids in them. it’s as simple as that. you can clearly tell in that photo that the top is cropped. of course it’s going to be even shorter if your daughter is tall. just send it back if you don’t like. it’s not like crop tops are a new thing. me and my sister regularly wore them twenty years ago.

BorisandHarriet · 27/02/2021 12:26

Wow. It’s nice. I like it. Obviously if worn with leather hotpants or whatever it might not be appropriate for a five year old but otherwise it’s nice.

PinkiOcelot · 27/02/2021 12:28

I don’t see the problem with crop tops, skinny jeans or bikinis.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 27/02/2021 12:30

Surely she could just wear a long vest or T-shirt under it ?

SillyOldMummy · 27/02/2021 12:33

I think you are being over-cautious. It is just a short T shirt, and most people see nothing inappropriate about young kids showing their midriff showing on a warm day. It's not dressing sexy.

Are you going to forbid cycling shorts and leggings too, for being tight? What's the difference between them and tight Jeans?

VladmirsPoutine · 27/02/2021 12:33

Why so much projection on a child's clothes? What exactly is wrong with crop tops or skinny jeans? Would you rather your daughter wore a duvet style coat till she's 18? Confused

Glitterblue · 27/02/2021 12:34

I'm going to be in the minority here and say I'm with you, OP. I don't like them either - they're too teenagey. DD has just received one for her 11th birthday and even for her I feel it's too old, plus she doesn't like it because she always likes to be well covered up and prefers oversized hoodies. She likes her comfort 😂 The annoying thing is that it would be really lovely if it was full length; the colours are so nice.

tyboi · 27/02/2021 12:35

What’s wrong with it, specifically?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/02/2021 12:35

Long sleeves and bare midriff is a bit impractical in my opinion... But I don't have a problem if they chose it.

I thought this would be about a tiny sports top...

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/02/2021 12:37

And skinny jeans... Extremely practical for skinny children.

Justforphoto · 27/02/2021 12:39

it's not even a cropped top it's just waist length, I'm wondering whether you have bought too small a size for your daughter, they are supposed to be worn very loose. I also wonder what your daughter is wearing it with, it is designed to be worn with something with a higher waist like skinny jeans.

If you really want to see crop tops you should see some of the dance wear also bikinis in a suitable style are far easier for young children to manage for the toilet than a one piece

Hankunamatata · 27/02/2021 12:44

Friends daughter wear lots of these - she wears vest top underneath and her Jean's are quite high waisted

BigRedBoat · 27/02/2021 13:30

I have a 6 year old girl and really don't see the problem, other than if it's cold enough for long sleeves is probably too cold to have your middle out but I guess a vest underneath would work.

Kitkat151 · 27/02/2021 13:47

It’s absolutely fine...my 5 year old grandaughter has one similar

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 27/02/2021 13:50

What is wrong with it? Aside from ridiculousness of a thick jumper that will keep you warm and cool at the same time.

Muskox · 27/02/2021 13:50

I think the one you've linked to is fine. Some tops may be inappropriate but that one looks perfectly okay.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 27/02/2021 13:52

What is the actual problem with it? Is there something shameful about the stomach of a 6 year old?

TheMethodicalMeerkat · 27/02/2021 13:55

I was expecting it to be the type that reveals the midriff in which case I’d agree with you but looking at the picture it seems it’s designed to sit at the waist. DD has a couple but wears them with high waisted jeans. Maybe your dd is longer in the torso? I am and can’t wear tops that are supposed to be waist length as they come up 2 inches too short for me.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 27/02/2021 14:00

My daughters have had bikinis since they were small, they are much easier to go to the loo in and we are all about comfort. I think this top is fine too.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 27/02/2021 14:00

I wouldn't be happy with a 5 year old in that but then I am someone who likes small children in bright colours and fun patterns. My DS has never worn jeans, I only like soft cotton on him.
