To think crop tops not for 6-7 year olds?

Bought this:
www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-paris-camo-slogan-top-6-14-yrs-/p/clp60485351

for my tall 5 year old. Didn't realise it was a crop top, pics were small on phone and not happy, she won't be wearing it. On her, her midriff is definitely more out compared to the model in pics anyway. Am I in the majority here? I'm not keen on skinny jeans or bikinis for this age either and realise (at least in the jeans case) that they're widely sold.
YABU - this cropped style is fine for 6-7 year olds
YANBU- it's too teenage.

I'd have no issue with a 10 year old wearing it but my eldest is 5 and there's no way I would dress her in it. I can't abide young children dressed like teenagers, I think it looks tacky.

Shelovesamystery · 27/02/2021 16:03

My 5yo has a few "crop tops" but they are in a bigger size so they are not really cropped and she has quite high waisted jeans anyway. I just liked the design of the tops. No way I would let her have her midriff showing at this age. Maybe when she's a teenager she will choose to if those clothes are in fashion but she won't be allowed before then. Also can't stand bikinis for children. A tankini or swimsuit is fine for that age. I think children look really strange in a bikini, it's something that a woman wears not a child.

Don't get the problem with skinny jeans though Confused baggy jeans don't look very nice. I never really think of skinny jeans as being sexy tbh, just jeans.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 27/02/2021 16:13

Personally I'm not a fan of crop tops or bikinis for young girls. My daughters are 12 and 8 and still don't have them.

Also they are so fair skinned bikinis would result in sunburn and more places to suncream. They both have had 2 piece sunsuits for years. They have swimming costumes for pools.

Crop tops again for the getting burnt factor and also my eldest would never wear one. Shes a baggy tshirt, leggings girl! My youngest wears tshirts that are slightly small so has a little bit of mid drift showing but I wouldn't purposely buy her one. Shes more of a summer dress girl anyway!

No issue with skinny jeans except in potty training toddlers as they can't get them up and down themselves!!

midnightstar66 · 27/02/2021 16:15

I think it's fine. I also can't imagine what the problem is with skinny jeans, they are just the same as leggings

GintyMcGinty · 27/02/2021 16:19

Shopping for my daughter in ASDA the other day and pretty much all the younger girls clothes were crop tops. Also horrible pastel colours and flouncy sleeves.

Got her some nice tops out of the boys section. Although even that section was pretty rubbish with the majority of tops plastered with "Cool Dude" or gamer slogans.

Really think childrens clothes are rubbish at the moment.

Carouselfish · 27/02/2021 16:29

I think kids clothes should be more about being practical than anything. Sure, nice colours and designs but I think crop tops are teenage because they aren't practical, they're about appearance. Skinney jeans just cut off circulation and stop you leaping about as much as my 5 year old does. Leggings don't restrict like that. Interesting point about the practicality of bikinis for toilet trips, I think I'd still go with a tank top. I'm with the posters who think it's tacky to dress children as teens and don't see the rush.

Also agree that 6 to 14 is a stupid age range!

I'm guessing your dd doesn't actually have any skinny jeans? Mine wears them a lot as she's very outdoorsy and likes to climb trees, slide down bankings, explore thick wooded areas with thorns etc and at one point we were getting through a pair of leggings nearly every day. Now we use the jeans they have the similar amount of stretch and movement but a thicker fabric which is harder (but far from impossible sadly) to tear

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/02/2021 16:39

My 9yo wears age 12 leggings for length... Its a big relief that I can get childrens clothes for her since age ranges cover child-teenage like this.

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 27/02/2021 16:44

There’s nothing wrong with this top! This length is the current fashion. Genuine question - What do you think will happen if she wears it??? My 9 year old daughter wears this length for all her tops and it makes no difference to comfort at all. I mean teens might wear a similar length but children and teen clothes are not all that different nowadays. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with teen clothes! She won’t look grown up and it won’t attract dodgy attention if that’s what’s worrying you.

firstimemamma · 27/02/2021 16:46

Yanbu op

Carouselfish · 27/02/2021 16:49

I'm not worried anything will happen! I just don't like it any more than I'd pierce her ears. But, then some people do. Yeah, we've had skinny jeans, definitely stops her doing the mad climbing she'd normally do.

I don't and never have dressed my girls in bikinis as I personally don't like the idea of little ones wearing them. Especially young kids.

Same for crop tops - I only bought them crop tops when they actually required them and not before.

doubleshotespresso · 27/02/2021 16:53

@WineIsMyMainVice

Yanbu.
I can’t stand seeing girls in adult or teenage clothes. They’ve got the rest of their lives to dress however they want.
At what age should they be allowed clothes they like?

Maybe when they've reached a level of maturity to know and understand not everybody is as cute as them?

OP your link wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but I agree with you. I detest many popular high street ranges for young girls and 6 is not an age for them in teenage wear.

doubleshotespresso · 27/02/2021 16:55

Sorry my post was for @SleepingStandingUp

midnightstar66 · 27/02/2021 16:56

Maybe when they've reached a level of maturity to know and understand not everybody is as cute as them?

Eh? What even is that answer. I don't understand it at all!

minniemoocher · 27/02/2021 16:57

I refused to let mine have cropped tops until they were old enough to work to earn money to buy them eg 16. They didn't have bikinis either until 15/16 - nothing wrong with swim suits.

Skinny jeans however I have no issue with as they don't expose them in the same way

Blackberrybunnet · 27/02/2021 16:57

Why not wear a vest under it? then no revealing midriff. I think it's cute

minniemoocher · 27/02/2021 16:58

But that's not cropped, you should see what some girls wear!

midnightstar66 · 27/02/2021 17:00

@Blackberrybunnet that's how my girls wear those- with full length ribbed t shirts or longline vests underneath.

Franpan · 27/02/2021 17:13

It’s a jumper. I’m pretty conservative but that’s about as harmless as it gets.

Wakeupin2022 · 27/02/2021 17:53

How do skinny jeans restrict them?

Maybe if they are too small or tight for them. But if they are well fitted skinny jeans then no problem at all.

My DD often wears skinny jeans on and its never stopped her doing what she wants.

Did you actually know what a crop top is? Because the link you posted is not a crop top
Beep9724 · 27/02/2021 17:59

I wouldn’t dress Dd (6) in a proper crop because I don’t think it would suit her shape but the one you bought doesn’t look too bad. I would Dd dress her in skinny jeans - not much different to leggings in the terms of fit? I wouldn’t buy a bikini just because I don’t think it would suit Dd.

The top in question doesn’t look too bad op. Maybe you could put another black top underneath it? I made a similar mistake with M&S bought a very girly jumper and not realising it was cropped. Dd is quite tall but she wore it over another top so not a problem.

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/02/2021 18:04

I don't really understand the style. Surely a black long sleeve top is for keeping warm, so why expose their tummy? That would feel unpleasant, like those tops with the shoulders ct out! Who wants randomly cold shoulders, or tummy, or any other patch?
