To throw away the chicken every week?

Fluffyhood · 04/02/2021 20:41

I know IABU but I need to be shamed so I start doing something about it!
Family of 4, we have a roast chicken every week, we eat the breast meat and then I throw away the rest every week, I hate doing it but I'm too lazy and unimaginative to think of what to do with the rest of it!
Please shame me and tell me what you do with yours, I'd love to make it stretch to another meal!

@LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone

I pick the rest of the meat off when it's gone cold, chop it into bite sized pieces, add some veg, add some gravy, put pastry on top (bought, not necessarily homemade) and ta-dah....it's a chicken and vegetable pie.
This is exactly what my mum does. With every type of Sunday roast meat.

Reincarnation into a pie for eating during the week! Smile

ThenCatoJumpedOut · 04/02/2021 22:18

I feel we are being baited to come up with the magic MN chicken that feeds a family for a week Grin

spaceghetto · 04/02/2021 22:20

Chicken burritos or fajitas or a simple pasta?

Icenii · 04/02/2021 22:22

Throwing away meat is a really shitty thing to do. Are you so far removed from what it is actually is that you don't care? You chuck an animal that died to feed your family into the bin because you can't be arsed?

toocold54 · 04/02/2021 22:22

I’m really glad you made this thread actually OP as we love chicken and eat it regularly but I always do the same things with the leftovers but some of the suggestions on here are amazing! I can’t wait to try them!

wishywashywoowoo70 · 04/02/2021 22:23

I roasted a chicken this evening for 3 adults and 2 little eaters. Me and my DD ate the skin because we are revolting pigs.
I had a leg as I prefer the meat. The others shared the 2 breasts. While it was still warming I stripped the rest with my fingers as it's easier than when it's gone cold. All the meats from the thighs wings and underneath hot stripped off. I'll use it for wraps for lunch tomorrow or make a curry tomorrow night with it.
Sometimes I'll make a pan of veg and use it for the next days lunch too.

I prefer all the bits of chicken that you throw away 😂

SunshineCake · 04/02/2021 22:23

Put gravy on the leftovers then it will be hot meat Hmm.

InsufferableLKIA · 04/02/2021 22:24

Thursday you looked at a picture of a roast chicken

And on Friday you talked about a roast chicken

🤣🤣

And on Saturday you thought about a roast chicken

And on Sunday you dreamed about a roast chicken while having your afternoon nap... and then BAM for Sunday dinner there it was again, resurrected on your plate. Proper bloody MN magic, right there.

toconclude · 04/02/2021 22:24

If you need to be "shamed" into making a tiny bit of effort there is something very wrong going on. Just make bloody sarnies.
/still not convinced this isn't a put on

BungleandGeorge · 04/02/2021 22:24

Alternatively you could just buy a chicken breast joint if you don’t want to use the rest

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/02/2021 22:24

The oysters are the best bit.

I don’t know why but the Hmm has me properly laughing at this comment GrinGrin

@LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone

This sounds so delicious and easy!
Do you put pastry on the bottom too?
And do you use normal gravy or chicken gravy?

Chocolateraincloud3 · 04/02/2021 22:26

The breast is the driest part of the meat!! Use the leftovers for sandwiches and made some nandos peri sauce to it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/02/2021 22:28

Just me and DP, so we have a roast which uses the breasts, then usually a chicken and red pepper risotto the next day. (The other option is generally a pasta bake with leeks, peas, white wine, cream, and mozzarella.)

Sometimes DP will make soup from the carcass with broth mix and whatever veg is knocking about, but honestly I hate the smell of it boiling away. If no soup, the cat is very happy.

I buy chicken breasts and freeze them so we often have a kind of roast dinner without the time it takes for an entire chicken. DP picked up yellow sticker pigs in blankets in M&S today which I am pretty excited about!

CaptainSirTomMooreismyhero · 04/02/2021 22:30

I only eat the breast meat too so just buy chicken breast did fillets. Saves wastage.

JewelTheft · 04/02/2021 22:32

We had a lavish chicken on sunday, have since had stir fry, chicken and leek pie and a cold pasta salad, and I made some stock for the freezer. There really is no reason to waste so much when there is so much else you can do. Soups, sandwiches, fricasee, curry. I havent read the full thread, but im sure there there will have been loads of other suggestions too.

Fluffyhood · 04/02/2021 22:34

I often make a curry each week too so I shall be using the leftover meat for that next week. You are all right, it is wasteful and the only excuse I have is laziness (not an excuse but my DM always does the same, the legs might possibly be eaten by somebody but most of the time the rest gets binned) so I suppose I've seen it as 'normal'.

This isn't even about money being thrown away. It's fucking disrespectful to the source. How disgusting.
And you can find mn you can therefore find bbc recopes and similar and get your head out of your arse.

This must be a pisstake

QueenPawPaws · 04/02/2021 22:34

Sandwiches with apple sauce and stuffing (so good)
Chicken Caesar salad
Add it into a pasta bake

Cadent · 04/02/2021 22:35

Why don't you just roast chicken breasts? (I'm sure already said upthread).

costco · 04/02/2021 22:36

you don't even have the oysters? they're my favourite thing ever.

Diverseopinions · 04/02/2021 22:37

Give the remains to the foxes.

We have gorgeous little furry ones which sun themselves in the long grass in the late spring. I gave some food down the end of the garden to the family and the next day this elder, statesman-like fox, a sort of Herne the Hunter fox, slightly grizzled, came and stood deliberately looking down the lawn to the window as though to thank me.

feistyoneyouare · 04/02/2021 22:38

Is there nothing on here that people won't turn into a pile-on? Jeez.

mootymoo · 04/02/2021 22:39

How do you have leftover chicken with 4 of you? Unheard of here! Legs are the best bit
